Clearly explains how to apply a final coat of urethane primer and methods of finish sanding that light coat of primer to prepare for BC/CC or single stage automotive paint.
Primer: Auto Body Master Urethane Primer
Spray Gun: Sharpe Finex 3000 1.8mm fluid tip
Mix Ratio: 4 parts primer : 1 part hardener : 2-3 parts urethane reducer If to thick add more reducer - if too thin use less reducer or add a bit more primer.

I work in a completely different field and have a similar experience: People have zero clue how much work goes into finishing a piece, whether it’s a guitar or a car touch up or what have you. The average person has never done it, and expects their work to be done way faster than it should actually be done if you do everything by the book.

Awesome. I just caught this before I finish priming and painting my 01 Ram 1500 inner fenders and the inside of the regular fenders. My spot weld's that attach the inner fender to outter fender look like crap but they are solid. I made the spot weld holes to big, and they are 3/4 welded and used my grinder to make almost flush. I then just hit the lip with spot weld's on each fender with body filler, sanded and primed once. I borrowed a flux core off a kid I know and let's just say it was splatter city, and a lot different then arc welding in middle/ high school. I since have purchased a lincoln electric 140 and purchased a small cylinder with 14 lbs of argon/co2. This is the way to go if a person has the means. Anyway per your instruction on another video, you were painting a hood matte black I think. I'm gonna prime and sand twice more, use my hand as a dust feeler and hit it with the air hose and tack cloth them. Unfortunately I only have an 8 gallon compressor. So I'm gonna be a spray can man. Hit it three times with paint, and twice, maybe three times with the gloss clear coat. This is practice btw and I guess a paint test all in one untill I get a 20 gal compressor and paint sprayer/s. One plus is there is an automotive paint outlet in the town over from me. If anyone has any tips or thinking I'm going about this the wrong way, please do respond..Almost forgot, yes the Mig welding is coming along, I get better with each session. About four sessions in all,(I took my time), to weld on new passenger inner and outer rockers and a cab corner that I only used the lower half. Any tips on body mounts. I have new left and right for the front of my cab and six new rubbers from energy suspension.. I feel confident enough to do them and have watched the two not very informative RU-vid videos on my year and style truck. I'm gonna hit the Dodge info threads on the web. The tricks of the trade I'm looking for are for the floating nut plate. My thought was dry mount the cab mount, vice grip the mount to the rocker where there are three spot weld's let the cab down then throw the bolt threw frame mount and rubbers, thread into nut that is welded to the float plate, threading the bolt should correctly align the float plate. make sure everything lines up then mark plate to mount with a sharpie. I have a decent access on the front of mount and also an access in the cab floor. So mark both, jack up cab, remove mounts and then weld float plates to inside bottom of mounts making sure to keep them aligned to my marks. If I'm wrong about this, could someone please correct me. Thank you. Your channel really is awesome. The best is when you have an accordioned rear quarter panel and you have the puller and are using body hammer and stretching the metal out at the same time so you don't oil can it and such. You do make it look so easy. Thanks for your knowledge threw the videos you post. I've learned a lot and have definitely applied some threw hands on and understand the theory behind all the rest.
@LakesideAutobody
@LakesideAutobody 3 года назад
Tim, good to hear you're working hard and improving your skills. As for the body mounts, you just have to remove the old one, jack up the bed, cab, etc., a little bit, repair the rust, replace with a new mount, set the bed or cab down on it and tighten up the bolt/bolts. I'm glad you appreciate my channel and always feel free to ask questions. Good to see a guy working hard - you'll end up being a great body man if you keep working at it and watching / listening to fellas that not only have worked in professional body shops but were successful in the trade.

I think I have the theory nailed down. 2nd opinion is always good, but you might actually benefit knowledge wise, if you haven't encountered front left/right replacementr cab mounts for an 01 Ram 1500. Thanks Jerry for giving me the confidence to reduce the primer. I reduced mine with 2 parts reducer, 4:1:2. It worked out perfect for a nice smooth final prime and reduced my final sanding time considerably. Very little to no orange peel. I also used a 1.8 tip on my large gun from the $50 2 piece harbor freight kit. Thats actually a nice kit and plenty good for applying primer. I also used that small detail gun to spray the door jambs out with base and clear and they came out great with just a 1.0 tip on that small gun. Did you do a review on the black widow HTE gun? That's what I'll be using to spray the entire truck base/clear.

You're welcome. You can paint over this, no problem, but I'll probably throw a coat or two of sealer on it just 'cause the sealer is dark grey and paint is dark blue. If it was a light color paint I would have just painted over the final sanded primer. Sealer is sort of a choice - not really mandatory. I've never said "s%&t", I should have sealed that :)

Jerry, if you were instead spraying that hood with a metallic base/clear topcoat what grit sandpaper would you have used instead of 240? I'm comfortable using 600 for metallic but am curious if one can get by with only 400.
@LakesideAutobody
@LakesideAutobody 3 года назад
I did spray it already with Nason BC/CC and it turned out real nice using the 240. Look for that video this friday (4/16/2021). I would say that most professional body shops would finish with 320 on a DA or 400 wet/dry sand (hand). I've worked at shops that only supplied 220 (DA) and 400 (hand) for finish sanding. There's no need to go super fine like 600, 800, etc. You'll have 2-3 coats of color and 2-3 coats of clear - that will easily bury any 320-400 grit scratches. No matter what the internet says, you'll be just fine with 320-400 final sand. Let me know how it goes for you the next time you paint something. Jerry

Hi. I have built a small cupholder/console out of wood and it handled the rattle can primer just fine. Then I touched it up with the old Nitrostan(yellow tube) spot putty and found the primer to check or leave jagged lines. So I sanded all off(by hand) sprayed some rustoleum filler primer, sanded that(220) and applied the primer again-lot less checks. I reapplied and reapplied sanding each time. I then put a coat of color on and found the jagged lines-so I repeated with the filler primer. Now, when I applied the color, I am getting very small little bubbles that I have to sand off(400) and reapply the color. It had some smaller bubbles-waited a bit and then resanded and applied more color. We'll see how it is tomorrow. Question can you tell me what causes the very tiny bubbles-lots of them and what causes the small crakes/checks? I am running out of color!! Thanks and I really enjoyed your sanding details.
@LakesideAutobody
@LakesideAutobody 2 года назад
My best guess is that one product is not compatible with another. The spot putty is lacquer based. The 1st rattle can of primer may have been enamel based - don't know though. I'm thinking Rustoleum Primer is lacquer based but not sure on that either. I'm not sure what type of paint you use so... Enamel paint can be sprayed over lacquer primer or putty but lacquer cannot be put over anything that is enamel. Just my thoughts on it. Let me know if you find out what was going on - interested :)

Does sanding the primer help the paint grab or is it more just to make sure you're getting a perfectly flat surface?

Both but most important really is making sure you're getting the surface you want to paint over.

Question: am I supposed to use urethane primer or I see others using 2K high build sealer. I’m confused. Can you help me? Some painters after laying on the sealer, don’t sand it. They just paint right over it. And also, when you put the primer, aren’t you supposed to sand it before putting on the second coat cause I noticed it gets dusty sometimes
@LakesideAutobody
@LakesideAutobody 18 дней назад
You only need one can of primer in your shop. That would be 2K Urethane Primer Sufacer. I use old fashioned 1K Lacquer Primer Surfacer but due to availability it's bet to get used to using urethane. Sealer is unnecessary - it's only if you are trying to seal the old finish or keep it separated from the new as there may be an adverse reaction. Sealer keeps everything sealed underneath the new paint, it can fill small imperfections and can be used to get the color close to what you are going to paint. Finally you don't have to sand between coats of primer. You will be sanding it before you paint. Here's all the steps in auto body repair - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mApSa0l4euQ.html If you have ?s again just ask :)

Question, so as you stated since it’s not a show car, you’re using 240 or 320. Would you then just go ahead and base over this? Or are you still going to guide coat and go up to 400 prior to base coat?
@LakesideAutobody
@LakesideAutobody 3 месяца назад
Most shops paint over 320 DA with todays BC/CC. It used to be completely acceptable to paint over 220 but that was acrylic enamel and lacquer - I still do today and it looks fine even with BC/CC. To be safe use anything from 240-320 on the DA or 320-400 wet sand by hand. You can go right to base coat afterwards :)

@LakesideAutobody

If you haven't gone down to bare metal you're fine - just paint it. A light coat of epoxy primer can't hurt though and may help with adhesion in hard to get spots like you say. If you have a lot of those spots look into Bulldog adhesion promoter - might help as well :)

I've never put paint over wet primer so I'm not sure if it would work - I'm thinking it would not be a good idea. If you want a non sanding type primer for bare metal spots try some sealer or just a cheap spray bomb can of lacquer or enamel primer. Let me know if I misunderstood the question :)

I have painted over 220 and have no issues. This hood though will be final sanded with 240. To be safe I think you'll be fine with anything from 240-320. DA you can use courser grit. I just use the 220 'cause it's faster, saves paper, and you can usually get away with it. I do use sealer though on overalls usually, so that helps fill any 220 scratches from the DA. Nce job, newbie question though, why did you use urethane primer instead of say poly primer? Thanks
@LakesideAutobody
@LakesideAutobody 3 года назад
Good question. Polyester primer is more for if your bodywork is a little shaky (crooked) - it's basically super thick primer surfacer - great stuff though. It really fills well. For regular straight forward priming you'll have two choices - lacquer primer surfacer or urethane primer surfacer. both of these can be mixed thin or thick depending on what you are doing. Some urethane primer surfacers require a coat of epoxy primer first so... Look for DTM urethane primer (direct to metal) to skip the epoxy primer step.

I'm becoming that kid always raising his hand. I applied 4 light- medium coats of canned 2n1 rustoleum sandable primer.... it covered well but has some texture to it....so much that I may consider a light sanding before I start with my block and guide coat. What canned primer will be smoother with less build for the top after blocking and addressing imperfections? What would it be called...surfacer? Finishing primer? Do they put something like this in a can? ooooooohhhh I think I found it. "Primer Sealer" The primer I used is a "filler" type...very thick.
@LakesideAutobody
@LakesideAutobody 2 года назад
You nailed it - if it says primer filler or surfacer it is a bit thicker and builds for blocking. If it's cheap or says primer sealer it is usually thin for just a light coat of primer. Keep asking ?s my friend - that's how you learn :) Remember to that you can use one primer for everything you ever need. That is a gallon of lacquer primer surfacer. If you need it thick you mix it thick - if you need it thin, you mix it thin. That's how its done in many body shops. I use Auto Body Master Lacquer Primer Surfacer for everything and thin it with any brand lacquer thinner - don't confuse lacquer thinner with paint thinner though paint thinner is mineral spirits basically. Let me know if that makes sense :)

I let that dry overnight but you can sand much sooner if you want. All primers are a bit different but generally if you can sand it with out the the paper getting gummed or clogged up you're good to go. I'd wait a few hours though to make sure if you're in a hurry :)

Remember that before the 90's there was just lacquer primer and 400 grit wet sand paper for a show car. There's were thousands of great paint jobs - perfect custom paint jobs. That being said, today there's better stuff so I'd use urethane primer for your primer surfacer. There's DTM surfacer too so you don't have to first use epoxy primer. I'd still use 400 grit to wet sand before painting and paint with a good quality BC/CC. Wet sand with 1200-1500 grit and buff - it will look like a show car. That's it really - that's the basics of a show car.

Yes that's fine - I used the exact same can of primer for tiny spots on this project: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aJHa1grz5Fs.html

Hey I have my 68 Shelby GT500KR in final prime and getting ready to sand it for base/clear paint. Can I guide coat the primer and sand it with 220 grit and then guide coat it again then sand it with 400 grit final for paint? If there were sand scratches still left over then the guide coat when sanding with 400 would show correct?
@LakesideAutobody

You can guide coat it every time if you want. I think that's a good idea if you are trying to get it as straight as possible. You can even use a block on large flat areas when finish sanding with 400 grit. Keep me posted my friend - can't wait to hear about the finished paint job :)

Just a quick question... When priming the body work for block sanding did you use a lacquer primer/sealer... Basically what I'm asking is can you use lacquer primer during the initial body work stages then cover with a urethane primer and finish with a urethane paint... thx... M
@LakesideAutobody
@LakesideAutobody 2 года назад
Yes you can do that or you can use lacquer primer surfacer through out the whole process. Just thin it a bit more for your finish sanding coat of primer. Remember before there was epoxy and urethane there was only lacquer primer surfacer - like most of the 20th century. That's all we used in the late 70's, 80's and early nineties too. We were using polyester primer surfacer too though in the 80's - that's basically a thin layer of Bondo sprayed on. Ask more ?s if you need to.

@LakesideAutobody
@LakesideAutobody 2 года назад
@@markd4838 You can use anything: regular filler, fiberglass reinforced filler, cloth and resin. It would depend on the need. Cracks and serious damage use cloth or fiberglass reinforced filler. Smaller imperfections, filling in your glass work use reg filler. DA sand and feather edge and prime. You can use lacquer primer, polyester primer or urethane surfacer. Which ever one you prefer. Myself..... I would use lacquer primer surfacer but that's just me - I've never had it treat me wrong. @LakesideAutobody
@LakesideAutobody Год назад
For a hood like this, any block sanding (body work, dings, etc.) 120-180 will work for blocking, then prime again, wet sand w/ 400 or DA sand with 240-320. You can even get away with painting over 220 depending on the type of paint used :)

@LakesideAutobody

It can be done - I'm not going to say it's impossible to get good results with spray bomb cans. I think it take a bit more time and maybe even cost more as spray bomb cans are getting expensive. You said to use 320 or 400... Then proceeded to use 240? May I ask why the contradiction? Is it because you're not wet sanding and don't want the material to block up the 320?
@LakesideAutobody
@LakesideAutobody 2 года назад
For finish sanding you can use anything from 240-320 on a DA or 320,400 even finer if you are wet sanding or dry sanding by hand. Personally I like 240 even 220 on the DA (faster/lasts longer) and 400 wet sanding. You're choice though if you want to go finer. The disadvantage is more time, paper and even more dust. The advantage is no worries of ever seeing sanding scratches - I don't see any in the jobs I do so I stick with the program :)

@LakesideAutobody
@LakesideAutobody 2 года назад
You can just buzz it down with a DA sander 240-320 or wet sand with 400. Wet sanding would give you a better job because you'll catch more imperfections. Usually though a daily driver will look just fine DA sanding it with anything from 240 to 320.

@@jdmchickkustomz9417 You don't have to seal it. The best sealer is paint. Sealer is more f a choice thing. Some guys like it to fill any imperfections, change the color of the primer for easy coverage, "seal" the old paint and primer to prevent any bad reactions from new wet paint and get everything the same color before paint. It can't hurt to seal it but it is not necessary - you can always paint over regular primer - sanded or un-sanded :)

@@LakesideAutobody I’m spraying over 9.5 x 14 x 82 3/4 MDF Loudspeaker Cabinets, used Rustoleum Gray rattle cans. The issue with the rattle cans is the spray width is only 2 inches and it’s almost impossible to get full coverage even if overlaying by 75%. I’m going to invest in a 20 gallon compressor from Harbor freight for $250 possibly buy the gun you recommended that sells for $123 on Amazon, it’s the one that had a small leak The video you shot which was awesome! I agree 100% with your comments that a crappy gun in the hands of an expert will provide a better finish than a great gun in the hands of a novice! Which I am at spray painting. I’m 66, and even an old dog like me can learn new tricks LOL! after researching the automotive paint finishes because of the beautiful colors available. I realize that oil base primer won’t work with a base coat made of acrylic or urethane automotive paints. I also read that it takes two weeks to cure oil base primer, But with that said I believe I’m going to have to completely remove the oil base primer and the rock hard putty, that I sprayed on one of the two cabinets, and apply a coat of acrylic primer since the McClaren orange paint colors that I’m choosing are acrylic paint

How do you get the dust off after sanding?
@LakesideAutobody
@LakesideAutobody Год назад
You can use a air nozzle like this - www.amazon.com/Blow-Pistol-Campbell-Hausfeld-MP514300AV/dp/B000BO6E1E Keep an exhaust fan going to expel the particles of dust out of the garage so you're not breathing all that suspended primer dust. I've heard of the slip on ones but never used them. The slip on ones would probably hold up well but may not look completely factory. If you're just looking to make a respectable daily driver, I'd try the slip on ones first. Fiber glass does take some work but it will look original and if you allow for drainage (drill some holes on the inside) it can drain, dry and last quite long. Let me know what you decide.
