I'm in love with phlearn. Crazy stuff... Sometimes I have to admit I do go a tad bit over board with my using of techniques shown here but I simply love phlearn. U guys r such a huge support for the freshly starting and aspirational photographers. I find it quite annoying when trolls stop by to say crap on the stuff u guys teach cos they do nothing but spew some serious nonsense. Great stuff guys.

I've followed many of your tutorials now. I just wanted to say that it's a pleasure to start your videos for the quality of the tutorials. but what i want to say realy and it's important, is that i really like your approach of learning, maybe made by your quality as a human being, sense of life results in that always happy teaching, dynamic and funny, generous and not boring. It's like meeting a friend and it's really a pleasure so to follow your tutorials :) Thanks a lot for that happiness :)

Great Vid, I just wished you would of added one last step which is...now that you've created this look/grade, how to save this as a LUT so it can be applied to additional images without having to go through all these steps on multiple images.

It's a really great tutorial, and I'm very thankful for this. But I think if you are new or just trying this kind of technique, you'll find it hard to get if you'll be using a completely different image. I'm completely a noob, but I think he easily selected the skin tone areas here because the highlights are in skin parts. Try using this same method on light background. I'm not so sure about this though, any thoughts? or corrections for me? :) :)

Personally, I think most films shot digitally have a cold cast that is not particularly pleasing or appropriate to every film. Go look at almost any film shot by Conrad Hall, Robby Muller, Robert Richardson, Vittorio Storaro, Haskell Wexler, Gordon Willis, Vilmos Zsigmond, or Robert Ballhaus and you will see richness through color and contrast. Color timers, like many other craftspeople in Hollywood, have gotten lazy and keep going back to that bullshit desaturated cyan well way too much.

your tutorials are great.. Can you do a tutorial if you have the know how which i'm sure you do on how to simulate medium format look/tones as if the image was shot with a medium format? The colors are washed out a bit and whites are creamy and has more of a vintage appearance - you know!

In a professional setting, I feel this was over complicated and would take too long to achieve a relatively easy effect. As well, they cast on the jacket was too harsh. Overcomplicating is not good in a professional workflow. Just an opinion.

buddy, its a recorded video.. posted to be viewed and listened to as often as you want, even has a pause/rewind button for your convenience.. whats the part youre still having troubles with again? that hes going to fast for you? its not 3rd grade, you dont have to sheepishly raise your hand and ask the teacher to slow down.. just pause it and quietly affirm your sluggishness with yourself..

Gosh,,, this is just what i needed for such a longest time~!. I'd come up w/ my own way of doing this,,,(which is quite similar to urs).. yet been not quite sure if mine was an efficeint one or not. Now,, this podcast shows what the professionals do, & 'how & why's...which ensures me what to eliminate & to keep for the best effects.

QUICK TIP: If you ALT(OPTION)-LEFT-CLICK on the Eyeball of any layer, all the other layers toggle ON and OFF. Do this on your original background layer and seeing the BEFORE/AFTER is so much quicker than selecting the layers, grouping them, and toggling on/off the Eyeball for the group.
