How to Apply for a Car Title and Registration in Texas (Transfer Title after Moving/Sale!)

Showing y'all how to transfer the title from a seller to YOU. This is a similar process to transferring a car title to Texas when coming from out of state. Having bought/sold a couple of cars AND transferred my own car titles from California, I hope this helps people. It is very important to fill out the information properly AND get the insurance, inspection, related documents so that there are no problems when you go to turn the title in to the DMV and put it in your new name/address.
You Need:
1. Car Title (signed front and back)
2. Bill of Sale (optional)
3. Car Insurance Slip
4. Inspection Report (need to get car inspected after insurance)
5. Application for Texas Title/Registration (www.txdmv.gov/...)
6. Money! (Cash, Check, Card)

Hey from Philly I move to Houston in 3 weeks. I don’t own the car, nor am I the insurance holder (my father is). How would I go about this? Do I have to get the car in my name (title) and have the insurance as well? Or could I just own the title and my father remains as the policyholder for insurance? How should I go about this?

@@ike___love This is a grey area. Best bet is your father signs over the title to you, then you can get it registered.

Bill of sale is not required. I typically bring a blank one with me just as an additional layer to present. Application is online on dmv site, or some DMVs have them at front desk

I’ve registered 4 cars so far, and I’ve paid between $180 and $300 per car. Stuff to consider: 6.25% sales tax through dealer, or tax is calculated for private party sales through SPV calculator. www.txdmv.gov/spv-calculator

Thanks for making such a meticulous video. I do have a question though - A little background, I moved to Texas in March and got the inspection done right away. Unfortunately because of the COVID-19 situation, the Registration office was closed and they said I am ok to drive with California plates until the office opens. Now that they are opening up, I made an appointment already for June. My question is, do I have to redo the Vehicle Inspection which was done in March, or will the current one do? And if I go ahead with the report made in March, will the registration stickers expire in March (valid until the inspection report)? Thanks a lot in advance.

Whoa that's very specific. I don't know the answer to that. Now from experience, if you register in June 2020, reg expires May 2021 (month minus 1). The inspection validity rule is 90 days before registration, so if you get inspection on March 20, you can definitely register up to about June 13 (90 days).

1. No, they can fill it themselves and don't need you for it 2. No, you just need to make sure the title is signed properly and remember to fill out Vehicle Transfer Notification and save a copy of that for your records

Rebuilt title would follow the same steps as this. Salvage requires a totally different process involving mailing title out and getting a rebuild affidavit.

I bought a car out of state from a private seller. I understand all of the documents I need, but when I looked it up it stated that I also need a “proof of sales tax payment” form. When do I pay that tax, and who do I pay it to, and where do I get the proof? Do I pay the tax at the tax office, or does it have to be when I purchase the car? That's interesting. I believe you'd pay the tax when you go to register the car. I may be wrong, but I believe proof of sales tax payment would be like if I buy from a dealer out of state and they insisted that I pay tax--then that would be presented to the tax office

As long as you signed the title on front and back, they can take it and proceed to DMV. I have the title signing on another video (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6ugST2tAF8Q.html). They should handle the 130U and insurance on their own. You don't need to give a 130U/insurance or go with them to DMV. Now from experience with selling, I HIGHLY recommend you do the following: 1. Print a generic bill of sale template to show the VIN and DATE you sold the car, make sure words mention "AS IS" on it, and keep a copy for yourself in case they don't register it on time. (eforms.com/bill-of-sale/as-is/) 2. Take a picture of the buyer's license too. 3. Don't forget to fill out the Vehicle Transfer Notification as well. (etag.txdmv.gov/Vehicle/MainTransferNotification.aspx)

Hi I have been watching your videos and have found them very helpful but I’m a little lost on my situation. I bought a brand new car in Montana 3 years ago and now I am moving to Texas in a few weeks. Since Montana has no sales tax, I never paid any when I financed the vehicle. The tax office will look for the insurance, title, and license to be in the same name. You may have to take ownership of the car via title to register it, and make the title names like "you OR sister"

Contact the bank to release the title temporarily for registration. They'll let you "borrow" it for 30 days.

If she filled in date of sale on the back of title, you'll be charged penalties for not registering within 30 days. If not, you're good. One oddball way to go around this, pitched to me by Dallas tax office themselves, is if you have a seller's affidavit to update the date of sale. If they sign that with an updated date within 30 days of the current date, that will help avoid penalties. You would bring that affidavit along with the title to register.

I bought a car in oregon and then moved to tx before I had finished paying it off. I registered my car in tx, no title transfer bc the title was still with my lien. I have now paid off the car. The lien from oregon just mailed me the oregon title. How do I go about switching to a tx title? Do I also reregister my car, with a new inspection and stuff? I just renewed my registration so my car would not be due for registration renewal until next year.

Yes, same process as I show here, just bring your Oregon title. You will need to have the insurance, inspection etc. Let tax office know you bought the car in Oregon, moved to Texas, and are looking to do title transfer and registration.

No the seller didn't. First thing--need to take it to inspection. I just drove it there, but most people will say you need a 30-60 day temporary tag or risk getting pulled over.

Yes, you have to have it, but it doesn't have to be signed by the seller. I've bought a few cars since 2017 and have always needed to bring one.

it's usually the name that appears on your legal documentation. If that's your former name, then sign it with that, then update post transfer

Transfer notification is fine. I have had buyers run tolls and the transfer notification (along with signed bill of sale) helps me out.

This was exactly what I needed to see. If you don’t mind answering a question for me it would mean a lot. So I’m moving to Texas from California in a few weeks and currently my car is paid off and owned by my parents. I’m insured under them and will have the title put under my name, as they are gifting the car to me. What exactly do I need to bring to the tax office in this case as my car is being gifted to me? Literally the exact same things as shown here. You do need to have the title signed over or you can’t register it. No you don’t need a TX drivers license to register the car. Yes you should have insurance before the process

They donated their car to you? You need to have the title in your name for that car. Then, yes you can buy insurance. Then, you can get inspection.

I just moved from Florida to Texas. I still have a Florida drivers license and my car has plates and title still registered to Florida. Do I have to get a new drivers license before I do anything?? Or can I register everything and then do my drivers license? This is my first time moving out of state and I have no clue the steps to take but your video was very helpful thank you

No you can register with your existing license as long as it points to a valid address in TX

I will relocate to the State of Texas in the form of cross country transportation. The State indicated that the new residents have a 30 day window to submit a title transfer from previous state to the State of Texas. The required documentations are proof of auto insurance in correspondence to new address, emission inspection results, property tax bill, utility bill, etc. My question is my existing residential state driver’s license acceptable at the point of vehicle registration or is it a mandatory requirement to present a Texas driver’s license despite the 90 day deadline in the application of new residents?

Existing out of state DL was good back in 2017 when I moved. Unsure if that rule changed.

According to the Texas DMV, the current driver’s license or government-issued photo identification fulfills the title/registration requirement. There are no state implementation of specification in the presentation of existing out of state driver’s license or newly issued Texas driver’s license. In this case, the original proof of identification will be submitted.

Hi, I'm trying to buy a car from a private seller and was wondering how do I get the temporary registration or those temporary paper plates until I get the metal ones? What are the steps to get it? Because that part is always overlooked in videos discussing about buying cars and I wanted to make sure.

I honestly have never done the temporary paper plate route. I've always driven it home plate or no plate.

I haven’t ever done gift, just vehicle sale. All I know is that you’re fine to transfer the title in your name in Texas. Just get the insurance print out, bring to inspection, then go to tax office with application.

Hello Edward I’m also from tx and was wondering if I’m financing a car from out of state and once I get it delivered to me, first thing I do is get it inspected correct? Once that’s done, I go to country tax office and fill out the registration part only of the application since I’m financing? Also after everything is done, do I get new plates as well? Was there anything to pay? Any input would be much appreciated thanks!

1. Add to insurance first 2. Get it inspected 3. For registration, tax office may want to see the title, so you would need to contact the bank. They let you "borrow" the title long enough to register it, and tax office will take it from you and mail the title to the finance company. 4. They will give you new plates, and yes you will pay fees about $200 for initial registration. NOTE: YMMV in some cases, they may assess 6.25% of whatever the SPV calculates for taxes in addition. For example, if Texas sees you paid $42,900 for a Maserati Ghibli, your tax will be that times 6.25% = $2,682 (personal example). That would make registration $2,882. Of course, dealer should typically handle tax fees in most cases so you'd just have to pay registration. SPV calculator here: www.txdmv.gov/standard-presumptive-calculator
