In this video I show how to apply a clear protective film to your wheelchair frame in order to protect the paint from daily abuse. I also show what the product looks like after 7 months of use and reapply it using a new method that eliminates wrinkles around the curved surfaces.

Just wanted to say thanks for all the hard work you put into making videos. They've been a big help! I was able to use this technique to cover my plain AFOs with a retro decal and rock them with greater confidence. It's the little things that can make a big difference sometimes ☺️

Brian! This tutorial was awesome. Your explanation allowed me to get great results the first time - minimal wrinkles and no burns LOL! My ZRa is looking great and hopefully will stay that way for years to come. I adore black too much to opt for an unpainted finish 😉

Awesome!! Glad you found it helpful. I have removed and reapplied this film at least 3-4 times as it wears and each time I change it out the chair goes back to new condition.

Paralyzed Living I am so glad to hear this! That's the one thing I haven't tested yet, but it is so nice to know the paint won't come off when I remove and reapply the tape. I've been telling everyone I know about the wonders of helicopter tape. I wish more chair users knew about it!

Thanks so much for this update, the detail is great. I was about to choose the polished effect instead of painted, based on your ZR video, so will now change to black, which I really wanted! Perhaps consider adding a paypal link for beer donations.

I just got a new chair 2 weeks ago. Its already getting scraped up on the foot plate bar. I need to get that tape!

Very helpful! Since I don't have good hand strength, I'll probably just be content with my "old lady" satin titanium. But your shiny black really is attractive.

This is awesome! Such a detailed tutorial, which is exactly what I need for a first time project like this. I'm getting my first custom chair this summer and want to go with blue for the frame, but I've heard that paint chips off really easily, so I've been trying to figure out a way to protect it. I think this will be perfect!
@ParalyzedLiving

SnowySpiritRuby yes do it!! My frame still looks brand new even after a couple years. When the film inevitably gets beat up, peel it off and do it again. If you care about how your chair looks, it’s definitely worth the effort and after doing it a few times you will get faster at applying it. 👍🏼

@@ParalyzedLiving Just last night I was looking at my chair and realizing that although the frame is blue, due to the impact guards, luggage forks, and cup holder (the latter two have proven themselves far too useful for me to even consider taking them off even temporarily), barely any of the blue is visible (pretty much one caster arm and that's it), which makes me kind of sad. I will definitely be trying to get this done over Christmas with my dad's help so that I can see the blue on my chair without worrying about it getting scratched up by running against the rusted underside edge (the fault of road salt) of my truck's doorframes (hence why I put the impact guards back on), or getting banged up by baggage handlers. Any particular brand of helicopter tape you would recommend?

@@ParalyzedLiving Found the brand of helicopter tape. Just sent this video to my dad, so hopefully we'll get to it next week, after I get the wax.

@@SnowySpiritRuby awesome! I’ve been doing it every 10 months or so for years and the chair still looks new when it’s removed/reapplied. Definitely worth the hassle IMO. And once you do it’s few times, it gets much easier. 👍🏼

@@ParalyzedLiving Just got it done this afternoon. I'm thoroughly exhausted, but it was totally worth it - I can finally see the blue without worrying about it getting scratched up! I've got standard caster forks, so my caster arms are a slightly different shape, which made putting the tape on a little tricky - I couldn't get the one end to stick securely, so I wrapped a strip around it to hold it down - and I put a squarish piece around the back of the housing. The caster arms might not be the prettiest (honestly, I'm probably the only one who can tell anyway), but for a first time doing any of it, I'd say mine came out looking pretty darn good, all thanks to your detailed instructions.

Very cool idea! Wish I had done this to my new chair to protect the tattoo design I got on it.
@ParalyzedLiving
@ParalyzedLiving 8 лет назад
+Carissa Louise Yea the tattoo designs are pretty cool. There's always your next chair...and i suppose it's not to late to try on your current one if you want to protect against further damage. The only thing I'm unsure of is whether or not the tattoo design would show up well under this stuff. You could be the guinea pig!

Love your videos a lot.Have helped a lot.A question actually,not related to this video but important.How you really deal with the snow?Driving?Shaveling?moving around under bad weather condition.We live in DC and you know we have big snow storm now.I bet you have lot more snow than us.But I can't find any of your videos about how to move around with snow weather.Thanks.
@ParalyzedLiving
@ParalyzedLiving 8 лет назад
+Jeanne Lee Snow can be difficult but manageable. I've found that being able to wheel in a "wheelie" position really helps because your front casters and feet aren't pushing through the snow. Unfortunately, we have not had any significant snowfall this year so I wasn't able to make a video as planned.

I'm curious about what the back looks like when done. Is there a gap, overlap or does it fit well? I can't say that I see how damage would come to the back side of the tube (or if anyone would notice). I guess it depends upon whether you're using 2" or 3" helicopter tape??
@ParalyzedLiving
@ParalyzedLiving 8 лет назад
+Michele Adams There is a gap but the material is clear so you have to look hard to really notice. I still suggest the 2" Helicopter tape because you will have a hard time getting the 3" to lay flat around the 90 degree bends in the tubing.

I know your comment is from a long time ago, but in case it helps you or anyone else, the particular one he uses is ISC Racer's Tape (I paused the video at 1:47 to read the inside of the roll) in the 2" width.
