Sharon Darling What a nice compliment! Thank you so much for taking the time to write some feedback. I love hearing that you are getting some good information from my videos and that they are being helpful. I know when you are first starting out with refinishing furniture it can be overwhelming and frustrating. I just want to make it fun and enjoyable for people. I’m definitely not a cookie cutter DIY RU-vidr with the perfectly edited videos and a script so thank you for appreciating me being me. If you have any specific questions or need help along the way please reach out. Happy to help! 😊

Hi there yes can you chalk paint over wax or do you hv to remove it.?
@madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074
@madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074 4 года назад
Sharon Darling Yes and no. Clear as mud right? Overall yes you can paint over a waxed surface IF the wax has fully cured (usually takes 30 days) and if you lightly sand scuff it first. If you want to remove the wax (bc it’s very thick or can’t wait the 30 days) I would use mineral spirits to do so. Great article here all about painting over a waxed finish: missmustardseed.com/can-you-repaint-over-wax/

@@madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074 Bethany, I am working on a little cabinet that will be converted into our bathroom vanity. I made my own chalk paint from Valspar Honey Vanilla and am leaving the top natural. I had made my own chalk paint before watching your recipe video and I used Plaster of Paris. Watching your video made me curious about what makes it toxic...Is it the burn risk if allowed to set on skin? As I said, this was my first chalk paint (FUN!) experience so I had nothing to compare it to, however, the paint sure seemed to dry FAST and get thicker with each successive coat (I did 3 coats). It sounds like that is not an issued with the calcium carbonate? Thanks for sharing!!!
@madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074
@madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074 4 года назад
Kathy H Plaster Paris is a known carcinogen so that’s why people warn not to use it or sand it or inhale the dust. Calcium carbonate is non-toxic and so much easier to mix and paint with. You will find CC mixes smoother, goes on super slick and you will have the same consistency with each coat. It’s doesn’t get thick over time like Plaster Paris. I mix mine in a plastic cup and cover it with tin foil and weeks later it’s still good to use. You are correct homemade chalk paint dries very fast after you apply it. That’s how you know you’ve done it right. Any good and true chalk paint should dry very fast after you apply it. Your project sounds lovely. I love the two toned look. Leaving some wood natural paired with paint.

I love polycrylic The oil based poly stinks up the house plus it takes longer to dry. Your right it dries pretty fast so you can get done faster. I did one project with a brush and one spraying. It sprayed pretty well too. I an a mature so I like to see how experienced finishers do it. Great video.

Hi. I love your videos ! They're very informative & 'to the point'. Question, would a high grit sanding block work just as well as a felt block with high grit sandpaper over it ? (Just trying to use what I have vs. buying more, especially since the price on felt blocks seems to have increased significantly since you first started recommending them a couple years ago). Thanks

Thank you so much for watching my videos! To answer your question...I personally haven't tried a sanding block with sanding inbetween coats. I have used them when I first started out with distressing and found that they would tear easily and break apart. I personally have never liked them and they cost more than a pack of full sheets of sandpaper that I use to wrap around a felt block. Hmmm I'm going to have to look now on the cost of felt blocks.

Hi there! If you have bubbles that have dried you will need to lightly, LIGHTLY sand those down. I would use 400 grit sandpaper wrapped around a felt block and lightly sand. Go from one edge to the next. Try not to sand too much in one spot and avoid a vigorous back and forth, you may sand right through your finish. I did another video titled SANDING INBETWEEN TOPCOATS that may help you.

Hi Bethany! I love your videos, so very helpful. I have an oak dining room table that I’ve sanded to remove the 40 yr old finish. I don’t think I’m going to stain it, I like the natural look. Do you recommend using shellac on the bare wood prior to applying polycrylic?
@madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074
@madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074 2 года назад
Hi Tara! Thanks for watching my videos! Okay the table you sanded...will it get much use? I ask because a water based topcoat like Polycrylic does offer protection and good protection but an oil based topcoat offers superb protection. The only downside to oil based topcoats is that they may amber over time. If you want your wood to not have any amber-ness to it then water based is the way to go BUT you aren't getting superb protection.
@tarahill8507
@tarahill8507 2 года назад
@@madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074 Your videos have totally guided me through this process! It will get light daily use, but I don’t want any amber to hues to appear. That’s good to know about the polycrylic vs oil based top coat. Since I’m going to use polycrylic maybe I should add more coats, perhaps 5? My other thought for added protection is to put glass on top of the table. Easy clean up and extra protection! Thank you for your reply. I’m going to start another restoration project soon. Your videos are amazing!

Hi there! I'm so glad you found the tutorial helpful! In the world of furniture restoration there is a saying WAX IS LAST. Basically you can apply polycrylic first and if you don't like it (for whatever reason) you can apply wax over it. BUT BUT BUT you can not apply polycrylic over wax, it won't adhere well. Think of it this way you are trying to apply a water based product (polycrylic) over wax. You ever see what happens when water goes over wax? So that's why they say WAX IS LAST. Wax can be put on OVER polcrylic but not the other way around. So what can you do? You can remove the wax with mineral spirits. After you remove the wax you can apply the polycrylic. I hope that answers your question.

Glad you found the video helpful. Once your Polycrylic dries you can hang your kitchen cabinets back up but I would keep in mind that it doesn't fully cure for 30 days. I would lightly handle the cabinet drawers. Meaning just take it easy on them. Kitchen cabinets can take a beating just because they are opened and closed multiply times a day. So I would gently open and close them for awhile.

Hello there Beth: Thanks for your video. I have a 2m long oak dinning table. I used the polyacrylic on it and I applied 4 coats, and sanded in between. The problem is I got brush strokes every time as the coat dried up. Is it because the table is too long for a polyacrylic finish, in that the brush is already out of the finish midway and I have to re-dip it into the can to reach the end, or perhaps the brush itself isn't good quality? I see areas on it where the gloss polyacrylic shows and others as if there isn't any; in those places it appears as though it just didn't stick on the oak table! What am I doing wrong? and more importantly how can I fix it? Many thanks

That all depends on your preference. The matte in the Polycrylic still has a slight sheen to it. It's not completely matte/flat. Glossy finishes show EVERY flaw, just FYI. Most people use a glossy finish on super flat surfaces.

Helps that there's no amber ting with this product worth putting the extra few coats on for more strength. Hope it lasts for me only tested it in one area. Doing a classic gray stain, think this choose good for those who doing a lighter color

I recently used an oil based polyurethane labeled satin…. It came so shiny, it had to be labeled wrong, I’d like to dull it out but too much to sand, can I apply polycrylic matte finish over the glossy oil based polyurethane?
@madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074
@madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074 2 года назад
That's tricky. Can you apply a water based topcoat over an oil based poly? Eh, most would advise against it. Mainly because you might have adhesion issues with the water based topcoat sticking to the oil based topcoat. You can apply water based topcoats over an oil based stain IF IF IF you wait a full 72 hours for the stain to dry completely and you apply a barrier coat of dewaxed Shellac. What brand of poly did you use? I'm not sure if an oil based topcoat comes in a matte/flat finish either.

I've painted a dresser with acrylic latex paint (Valspar signature) and was going to put polycrylic on next. I've watched your videos for all your great tips and applied primer with shellac first since I was using a really light gray paint. I'm nervous about two things-1 I only used one coat of primer with shellac but saw later that I think you recommend using 2 coats, so I'm concerned about bleed through and 2 I decided it looked to plain so I distressed it. Do you think I could get some yellowing since I sanded parts down for the distressing. If polycrylic seems like a risk, is there another top coat you'd recommend, or could I not use a top coat at all? I'd hate to ruin my paint job that I'm loving right now.
@madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074
@madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074 3 года назад
Hi Lindsey! Gosh it's so hard to give you the thumbs up and say GO FOR IT apply the Polycrylic and guarantee you no yellowing. How did you prep the surface before painting? Did you sand off the other finish or not? You said you applied primer with Shellac. I normally just apply Shellac. Just Shellac. What product are you talking about that is primer with Shellac? If you plan on not applying the Polycrylic you could always use clear wax as a sealer over paint. I would highly recommend applying a topcoat of some sort to protect your dresser.
@lindseywalters2527
@lindseywalters2527 3 года назад
@@madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074 I just did a light sanding with an electric sander. The top of the dresser wasn't wood all the way through. There was particle board underneath (when looking from the top drawer pulled out). The product I used is Zinsser B-I-N and it says "shellac based". I honestly thought that's what you were using in your videos lol. Are you just using clear shellac and no primer usually? When I looked into using wax I read that you can't use wax on latex paint because it can't penetrate and floats on the surface.

Hi Lorrie! I think I just answered your question under another video. If you have already waxed the tops of your end tables you can't apply Polycrylic over the wax. I know bummer. You would need to remove the wax with mineral spirits first. The Polycrylic won't adhere over the wax. Also Polycrylic won't yellow but you need to prep your piece right in order for that to be true. Meaning you primed/Shellaced before you painted.

Ohhhh noooooooo! Yes an oil based poly will definitely yellow over paint. Rule of thumb is water based topcoats go over water based paints. Oil based topcoats go over oil based stains. Joe Botnick I’ve added a little paint to just tint the Polycrylic, especially with black painted pieces. Here I was thinking oh this will be easy just slap it on let it dry sand it then go again.... Wrong!! I have 2 beautiful vintage drop leaf end tables. The base I've done in a white chalk and sanded to get the farmhouse look. It's gorgeous. Sadly I didn't know how to use the poly correctly and got a little yellowing. I'll work on fixing that later. The top and leaves I staind a dark walnut again gorgeous! Until I got to the poly =( I'm using a 2in synthetic brush and am getting tons of drips down the edges I try to fix it then mess everything up! Plus the brush makes Grrr it's a mess. I'm currently in the process of sanding everything back off. Then will more than likely need to stain then again. Just wanted to give a little back story 😁 When I'm ready to use the poly again I will try the 2in foam with the nylon. The real questions.... How do I not have the drips down the edges that are rounded? Am I applying too think? Should I do the tops first then the edges and in doing so how do I clean up the edges before it causes more problems?

Here’s what I would do to fix your two dilemmas: 1. The yellowing. Shellac - apply two coats. Then repaint, then reapply the water based Polycrylic. 2. The top and restaining. Don’t use Polycrylic. Use an oil based topcoat. Better protection, easier to apply. I highly recommend General Finishes Gel Topcoat. Super easy to apply. Use a two inch foam brush. I’ve done a few tutorials about how to apply this product.
