Hi folks, bit of a long video so I apologize in advance! I explain what shellac is and how I apply it to my estate pipes. I guess it is a bit of a tutorial on how to make your old tobacco pipes nice and shiny again!

Great video thank you. I have just started restoring old pipoes and found it very helpful. Shellac will be ordered today!

What a nice pipe and even nicer after your treatment! Good info, too. Thanks for putting it out here. All the best, Michael.

Thanks for watching, shellac seems to be controversial however it seems to be working ok for me for now!

Well laid out video, I'm getting ready to dye and shellac a pipe and this is very helpful. I'll probably make a very small batch of shellac based on the amount you used so I have some of the flakes for later use. I am going to do a cheap cob first as practice, and I think it will look better.

Awesome Simon! I'll more than likely send my pipes out to get restored should they ever need it, but I enjoy watching how these things are done. Hope you are well.

haha imagine it at my end! That ambient stuff is self generating so it just goes on and on forever without repetition, I just record a little bit to upload. Often I will let it play all day whilst I get on with things. I have another SC account with some more up tempo stuff , haven't contributed to it for ages but... soundcloud.com/unit51

Your channel is a gold mine! Exactly what I was lookng for. One question, instead of the final buffing with Carnauba wax, would be an option to put a thin coat of shellac, DON'T sand and just dry buffing it?

Funny. My first bag of shellac arrived this week. Got de waxed super blonde 1/4 lb. looking forward to playing around with it. I’m finishing up a billiard with great grain on it tonight. So I’ll try shellac tomorrow. I may do it on a cheaper estate first though on second though ... Love these type of videos. 👍. Also, it’s bug poop basically. Lol. Lac bug. I think it’s J A;an and someone else discussed the shellac myth. Someone cut through a pipe and did all this testing to myth.

Thanks for watching. I think this is not de-waxed looking at the sediment but I have heard that you put the solution in the freezer' over night which helps congeal the wax then just filter it off. I would recommend trying on an estate first as it took me a few goes to figure it out and get the feel for it. Good luck and I would love to see the results!

@@ariegepipesmoker897 yeah I will try on some already sanded down estates. . I’ve got several still at that stage. I did some reading last week and some vids snd they recommended de-waxed and super blonde or higher for less color change. Guess it’s closer to clear. But it’s much more $ for dewaxed so if you can do it yourself, great. Either way, as you said, we have enough shellac for a very long time anyway if only using for pipes. :). I kept seeing 1/2lb cut for pipes but I never used shellac so no clue. If 1lb works, great. I got a big fan of denatured alcohol for it and also thinning out stains. I’ve been using isopropyl alcohol for thinning dyes out but kept hearing denatured a lot too. So I’m curious if any noticeable difference there as well. I found another video the other day by an established pipe maker that uses shellac for his sandblasted and rusticated pipes mainly. Thanks again for the video. I’ve seen videos with discussion but not application. I’m glad you took the time to do this. It’s a big myth on breathing in my opinion. But still persists.

@@peter-radiantpipes2800 Looking at my flakes I would say that there is a bit of a mixture regarding color! However it doesn't seem to darken the briar... I read about 1/2 pound cut also, however some folk said that they go with a 2 pound cut so I started in the middle! De-natured alcohol is ethanol with additives to make it undrinkable,, same stuff!

Very interesting!! What compound is the white? I have many compounds for jewellery, but all of them leave dots of compound on surface, perhaps is too fast my polishing machine. Any advice? Thank you for the lesson
@ariegepipesmoker897
@ariegepipesmoker897 3 года назад
hi Jack, the white is made by the cheap company "silverline" It is the only one in my local hardware store! I am not sure why you would have dots left behind... could it be micro pits on the silver that the compound is getting deposited in?
@Gspitaletti
@Gspitaletti 3 года назад
@@ariegepipesmoker897 in the silver goes right, but I'm trying in the briar and it leaves behind compound, perhaps too much coupond and too fast the speed
@ariegepipesmoker897
@ariegepipesmoker897 3 года назад
@@Gspitaletti ah ok! yeah only a tiny bit of compound is needed or it does leave deposits! White vinegar seems to wipe it off without damaging the finish... Indeed this slower speed is far far better than it used to be. Just a case of experimenting I guess until it all slots into place and seems to work. Kinda why I am practising this stuff on estate pipes before I venture into the world of pipe making!

I have an old calabash with a stuck mouthpiece that is off kilter. It has only one maker mark, a small giraffe image. Any idea as to the maker? Anyways, it is not budging,. it seems the mouthpiece was possibly shellaced into the stem. Any help appreciated. Thanks
@ariegepipesmoker897
@ariegepipesmoker897 2 года назад
I can't help with the maker, I suspect there is a Calabash underground forum somewhere that could help identify it! If it is shellac sticking the two together, I would try some pure alcohol on a Q tip and try and dissolve the shellac and rub it off! Good luck!

What grit are you sanding the first coat back with?
@ariegepipesmoker897
@ariegepipesmoker897 3 года назад
a very used bit of 1000 grit, I found fresh 1000 a bit too aggressive. I think 1500 would be perfect!

@@ariegepipesmoker897 thx. I finished my billiard. Looks like yours there actually. Longer shank but not a Lovat so billiard is closest. Lol. I’ve got a couple to try first. I read if you throw the shellac in an old style coffee grinder, it’ll dissolve in an hour or so instead of 6-9 hours Etc. I may try that as well. I’ll do thin coats and see how it goes. Thx again.

The only other video I've seen with shellac being applied is this one ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dlbSmulEfXM.html and well worth a complete watch. You are right in the multiple thin coats rather than trying to cake a thick coat on in one (that will always end on tears, well maybe not tears but lots and lots of sanding).
