Summary: 1- Focus on differentiating between the things that I can control, and the things that I can't control. And focus on the things that I can control. 2. Train yourself to be systematically less prone to be overreacting to criticism. 3. Planned poverty and suffering during specific days.
@clevelandwilliams5922
@clevelandwilliams5922 Год назад
I will add. 4.) Look at situation in its simplistic form. For instance when someone displays jealousy & envy. Be aware of the motivation, the response should be it’s the job. Don’t over complicate it. Like when they take you from a post where your extremely efficient, good & proficient. They will re define, your role so you cannot display your skills or abilities. So the Stoicism can adapt their skill or abilities to another situation & look, focus & adapt the job description

Any time anyone asks you "how you stay so calm" or "how do you do it?" or something along those lines, they're breaking the ice for you. From there, tell them what you do. Don't suggest it for them directly. Just show the benefits and where you can find more information. Im not sure how effective simulating poverty etc is because you know that when it ends, you go back to wherever it was you came. Very different than being poor and not knowing when it will ever end
@knpstrr
@knpstrr 5 лет назад
Simulating poverty is about reminding yourself how little you really need. You may be more comfortable with luxury, but it is not necessary. If you fear losing your life of luxury then it is actually a thing to avoid, since fearing is bad. If you live in luxury but are indifferent to it if it is lost, then that is a good way to live. If you fear poverty, then you have work to do on your mind - it should not be feared.
@tme98
@tme98 5 лет назад
@@knpstrr either way, when you are "simulating" poverty. you KNOW in your conciousness that you will be safe- because you are simulating it. Hence why it's ridicolous- the point is gone.

Tony becoming accustom to poverty like conditions and detaching oneself from luxury is pointless? We’ll have to agree to disagree.
@tme98
@tme98 5 лет назад
@@knpstrr no, but the method of which he is attempting to become accustomed to it is pointless. You will always have in the back of your head that "This is a test for poverty" and not "wow, im ACTUALLY poor." how do you disagree with this? Yeah, planning for it will secure probably some material methods, but not the back-end mental ones.
@knpstrr
@knpstrr 5 лет назад
@@tme98 You say: "You will always have in the back of your head that "This is a test for poverty" and not "wow, im ACTUALLY poor." The above is so obvious I don't know why you feel the need to state it. Simulating poverty is a reminder. It is not a dumb "test" just to see if you can do it for the fun of a challenge. Seneca quoting Epicurus: "The acquisition of riches has been for many men, not an end, but a change, of troubles." For the fault is not in the wealth, but in the mind itself. That which had made poverty a burden to us, has made riches also a burden.

Here are 5 key points on applying Stoic Philosophy to your life: 1. Stoic Philosophy as an Operating System: Tim Ferriss emphasizes that Stoic Philosophy is not about passive acceptance or emotionlessness. Instead, it serves as an effective framework for making better decisions and training oneself to be less reactive, especially in high-stress environments. 2. Differentiating Between Control and Non-Control: Stoicism teaches the importance of differentiating between things you can control and those you cannot. By focusing your energy on what's within your sphere of control, you avoid wasting time and resources on unchangeable aspects of life. 3. Training for Resilience: Ferriss mentions practical Stoic exercises like exposing oneself to uncomfortable situations, criticism, or practicing poverty scenarios. These exercises help individuals build resilience and become less affected by external challenges. 4. Developing Present State Awareness: Stoic philosophy encourages developing present state awareness, allowing individuals to become more aware of their thoughts and emotions before they lead to impulsive or harmful decisions. 5. Balancing Stoicism with Other Philosophies: Ferriss suggests that individuals can adapt Stoicism to their preferences and personality, combining it with other philosophies like Buddhism or Epicureanism to find a balanced approach that suits them best.

The Catholics have a 40 day period during the year that practices fasting, not smoking or using stimulants and helping people around you, much like Eid, a good Catholic would obviously try to put these virtues into their life generally, so it was always down to the individual, Catholicism was captured by infidels and turned into a monotheistic, overarching, ecclesiastical dictatorship and all aesthetic and spiritual people fell into "heresy". I consider myself a good Catholic and a good man because of it, and This man speaks in a language I understand. More power to you young man.

Live in poverty, but remain committed to helping the poor. You can not learn stoicism by listening to someone talk about stoicism. You can not learn it from a book. Mother Theresa, Nelson Mandela, or any person unlawfully detained against their will - are good examples of modern day stoics. Marcus Aurelius was an emperor - his word was law, his stoicism is of a different order.

May I suggest you host Firas Zahabi on your podcast. He is obviously one of the best MMA coaches in the field if not the best, but he is also a great philosophical mind imo, I think it would be a fascinating podcast.

I find it essential for highly sensitive people to practice stoicism at least for some short period of time. Like in autistic people especially adults they block all other means of input they are taking in strictly, when they're focusing on one thing. It's altimate out-put is focus, in my point of view.

Something done repeatedly with discipline is “constancy”, is it not? Consistent is that the parts belong together. An elephant with the head of a horse is inconsistent. Preaching moderation and then drinking all week is inconsistent. But I might be wrong, my native language is Spanish.

Okay, you need to just get to the point, man. I'm not interested in how smart, cool or thoughtful you are. I already know the history of stoicism . Just spit it out and leave your ego out of it! How to apply stoicism is the title, dummy.

I like most part of the stoic philosophy, but I suspect that the reason I like it has to do with a comfortable illusion that I could focus my emotions on the things I control. I think that even if I focus my actions on the things under control, things outside my control will still have great impact in my emotions and well being.

Isn't this tailoring everything to comply with the conception , you could argue the same for any philosophy if you find success

Most of the time it is not clear what is and what is not under your control. How would you know what is and what is not under our control? most things are in some degree directly or indirectly influenceable by us if we think enough about it,

From my personal experience with people of all kinds so far, I can say that there is a very thin line between 'stoic' and a stingy, skimpy person

Tim, what about instead of torturing yourself. have you tried going to a developing country and just living with and helping poor people? there you will not only pre-plan for your days of poverty, you will actually live in an unplanned poor circumstances. Don't get me wrong, it's not meant as a criticism, but a constructive way of learning about yourself.
