Looks like a ton of fun! As a flat lander, I imagine swirling eddies off the ridges and in the little valley. Is it simply a matter of only heading into a location like this when winds a low, or is there any way to read the wind situation as you head down into there?
@alyssacobb3432
@alyssacobb3432 Год назад
I only go in when winds are nearly calm. You can really get knocked around below the ridges. The mountain flying class that I took in Idaho recommended flying early and late when the winds are calm. It can really swirl down the valley yet look calm above, and even the windsock could indicate calm. I feel it's best to fly it in nearly calm winds.

This is cool to see you guys set up for a narrow valley landing and working the pattern. Thanks!

It really helps having a pilot fly it and talk through it the first couple of times going in!

Alyssa, what part of Ohio to y'all live in? Looks like southeast OH. I lived in Mt. Vernon and Columbus for 15 years.

Yes, southeast Ohio. This was filmed in western West Virginia.

Maybe it’s just the camera angle, but it seems like you’re dragging it in. Could you not stay higher and drop the plane in, arrest the descent with a bit of power if need be?
@alyssacobb3432
@alyssacobb3432 Год назад
It is the camera angle, it makes things appear much closer. We had a low power setting descending in the valley, about the equivalent of base and final power settings in a regular traffic pattern. While we were calling out our airspeeds, I didn't think to call out the power setting, but that would have been helpful. The low power setting gave a nice stabilized approach, but I'll experiment next time to see what a higher approach and near power-off descent gives.
