Hello and welcome to our guide on how to assemble and fit a Tailfin Rack system to your bike. In this video we’ll go through the tools and parts you need, how to put everything together and finally, show how simple it is to fit your bike.
The key differences between a traditional bolt-on rack and a Tailfin Rack are the way it attaches to the bike, the connections between the Rack and luggage and, last but not least, the aesthetics.
A standard rack typically requires dedicated mounting points to be fitted to the bike frame and isn’t compatible (without rudimentary adapters) with bike frames without the relevant threaded eyelets. A Tailfin Rack doesn’t require specialist mounting points to fit your bike as it uses the rear axle to mount. This makes it compatible with far more bikes, including lightweight road bikes and full-suspension mountain bikes. This means you can use your favourite bike for your daily commute or next bikepacking adventure - not something possible with traditional rack setups.

What about the bolt on installation? My rack came with a bag of random bushings and screws but no instructions. Also, the holes on the inside of the lower end of the rack are countersunk but none of the hardware is countersunk?

For direct mounting option you can see the installation guide here, media.tailfin.cc/app/uploads/2022/10/27103816/TAILFIN-2022_DIRECT-MOUNT-INSTRUCTIONS.pdf

Can you leave the tailfin axle on when you ride without the rack again or should you switch back to your original axle?

I can’t get the thru axle to fit It seems too long for my Specialized gravel bike. My axle width is measures 142 so have you a shorter option ? Can I swap the one I’ve got?

It’s normal for axle threads to show on the driveside. This is because we make the axle for both road & MTBs (which use longer axles). Most importantly, it is just as safe as your original axle as the number of threads engaged with your frame are the same. We’ve not seen any issues with threads showing, and the axles are used around the world in a range of terrain and weather conditions too. If you are at all concerned though a small section of silicone tubing would be an option too. We currently produce one length of axle compatible with road/gravel and MTB frames (the latter use longer axles to accommodate their wider hubs) and so more threads will show on road/gravel frames. If there is anything else I can help with, please let me know!

Hi guys, I have just installed the rack, it fits so far, but I have some concerns. If I want to click in the buttons of the quick release dropouts or if I want to click out the buttons when I remove the rack, I need a lot of force, especially on the left side (viewed in the direction of travel). It doesn't look as smooth as in the video. It's quite difficult, especially when clicking out. It doesn't seem to be aligned properly perhaps? I tightened all screws according to the torque wrench. Would appreciate some quick advice, thanks!

Hi Klobu, we recommend pushing the other side of the Dropout in and then pulling the release pin to release the system. If you could please email Hello@tailfin.cc our team will be able to send you some instructions on this to help sort your issue out asap.

When using the through axle, I found that I could not fit the rack on the left point, because the frame has a c section that obscures the mounting point. I used the spacer to solve this (by allowing the left part of the axle to protrude more) - is this acceptable?

Hi Craig, this should be fine once tightened to 8-10Nm. On some bikes it won’t be possible to get 100% centred, but there’s flex within the setup to accommodate for this. You can email in some pics for us to check too if you'd feel more comfortable with that.

4:43 Thanks for this instruction. Is it possible that the Torx key (to big) doesn’t match to the silver screws? With regards.

The Security Torx set is supplied with its own Torx key and for the rest of the assembly you will need to use a T25 size key.

How do remove a top stay that was installed backwards?

Hey! Undo the clips holding it in place either side and gently work it loose by pushing and rotating one side at a time.
