How to Authenticate Vintage T-shirts 

I think you can learn a lot about authenticating your average vintage tees by paying attention to the much more common ones you come across like event tees (10k, etc) that have dates on them. You can get familiar with feel, construction, tag style, printing and note what decade they're from. Do it enough, and it becomes almost muscle memory to pick true vintage out of a stack or rack. With how much volume you go through day to day, you could probably do it with your eyes closed. Thanks for the video! - Katy

Def just bought a fake Megadeth AOP tee - I would say the thing that gives it away the most is that some of these modern reprints/fakes are using ink that feels like silicone/rubber which is a more modern ink screen printers are using.

Two things I’ve noticed in regards to identifying fakes using the tags: If the tag doesn’t have a brand that made the blank, it just says material and size such as ‘100% cotton, XL’ but not brand such as Giant, Fruit of the Loom, etc, it is more likely to be (but not always) fake. Also, a lot of times these guys printing fakes who stitch on a giant tag or whatever get lazy about cutting or pulling out the old tags. Check to see if there is any remnants of a prior tag. Also, we’ve all gotten fooled fellas. Just get your money back and think of it as educational 🙏

People are definitely using the term "vintage" too loosely lately. Vintage is 20 yrs or older. Antique is 100 yrs.

Liquid blue gets real tricky because the re prints are vintage now.

What about a valuable tee printed on a different tag/company from the day to day norm? Example, an in utero printed on a brockum instead of a giant.

What about direct to garment? Like vintage blanks with new graphics? I copped a tee with a vintage tag, single stitch, good fade, and it's fake. How I know is that the tag is a fruit of the loom best black tag which is late 80s to early 90s. The graphic is of an anime from 95/96 and even the graphic is faded. I've also been told by many that the seller has scammed them. Fakes r gettin super good watch out!!

I pulled a fake matchbox 20 shirt. Licensing on it was very blurry and not really readable & had a super fake giant tag. So weird the stuff they fake.

Did Liquid Blue ever use Fruit of the Loom tags?

If you show up to any thrift store in the northeast or bins 2 hours after open, and any “grail” is left. There’s a 90% chance it’s fake. Lol Collar, sewn in tags, buzzwords(50,50, made in USA, beefy T,) washed out lettering on tag. Single stitch(most of the time) Also. We’re about to hit a weird timing where shirts from 2010 are about to be considered vintage, and I’m not sure how I feel about it lol.

A slipknot shirt 🤣, its sad this is where the vintage game is at though. People so green they think their slipknot shirt could be fake. People calling screen print tagged shirts vintage
