How To Avoid Paying For Ice To Keep Your Cooler Cold!

Do you want to discover a really cool trick another angler taught me that has saved me who knows how many hundreds of dollars over the past couple of years on ice for my cooler?
Then watch this video.
As you know, having cold drinks on hand while out on the water is essential.
But buying ice for your cooler before every trip is a waste of time and it can cost a lot over time. Not to mention, it takes up precious time you could be fishing!
To see the full review and video of how to never pay for ice bags for your cooler again, click here:
www.saltstrong.com/articles/ho...
But the good news is that there is a very easy solution... all you have to do is simply use plastic bottles and freeze them to keep the cooler cold while also being drinkable themselves once they eventually melt.
I do this with normal sized water bottles all the way to the 1-gallon jugs of water (those will last for days when frozen).
Best of all, the same water bottle can be re-used many times so the costs are minimal.
So before your next trip, make sure to get some bottled water frozen so you don't have to stop by a gas station on the way to the ramp.

Growing up near the coast and loving to fish, my dad would do the same with the old time wax milk cartons. He'd put them in the freezer and the next day, they were good to go. The larger chunks of ice are so much better in your cooler. We were cheap, I guess, but we caught lots of fish. I miss those days with my dad, but he taught me well. I still absolutely love to fish. Thanks, SaltStrong for all your tutorials. I'm getting better every fishing trip I take.

My grandfather did this with paper milk cartons and milk jugs 50 years ago. Thanks for bringing it up again to teach the young'ens.

I use (2) frozen 2 liter bottles in fish bag, lasts long enough for yak fishing.Can drink if you get stranded, but I also carry 2-3 smaller frozen bottles in fishing back-pack for drinking.I don't even take a cooler anymore, unless to sit on while SUP, then I just use frozen bottles in it too.Great tips guys, keep em coming, luv your channel.

Luke, I've been freezing empty Pepsi/Coke 2L bottles for 15+ years for just that purpose. They become chunk ice and last much longer than the party ice. Another benefit is that your cooler doesn't become full of sloshing water (unless you use my tip below) - the bottle keeps the water contained. Return home from a fishing trip, hose the bottles off and put them back in the freezer. Another tip - empty the ice maker tray the night before into a kitchen garbage bag for use while out fishing. You gain additional ice to help the frozen 2Ls, and you keep freshly made ice in the ice maker tray.

+Jim M Great tips Jim! I haven't tried the 2L bottles yet, but consider it done on my next fishing trip. And I like the other "free" ice tip as well. Fish On!

Ice expands so pour off some of that water, at least half a cup to keep the gallon jugs from splitting and leaking. Also clean your water containers periodically with soap and water or rinse with boiling water. Germs can accumulate.

i bought a bunch of 1 qt aluminum drinking containers at the dollar store and froze them. No leaching of BPE or BPA from the plastic and they stay colder longer. We also painted a few black to lay in the sun to keep soups, coffee, etc. hot.

Wolf in sheep’s clothing. Freezing water in plastic leaches plastic into your water. This is easily verifiable, a simple google search will prove so. It’s cheap, inexpensive and seemingly problemless, but it’s long term effects are detrimental to your health.
@NirvanicSunshine
@NirvanicSunshine 3 года назад
@@RainMow Unfortunately, I tried it on a long camping trip in the hot summer and discovered that it was worse than just dumping ice in the cooler. The amount of condensation pooling in the cooler was staggering; the cold didn't transfer enough to surrounding food, so food was getting too warm; and, most surprisingly, they were all fully melted by the second day, the same rate as just dumping ice in. So I killed the idea for good after that.

tupperware containers to make block ice. Then throw them in the cooler. Especially good if you have a deep freeze
@MySonsMother
@MySonsMother 5 лет назад
Also they are better shape and size that can adjust around the food than 1 big jug that limits what goes into the freezer.

I like to keep a few extra bottles in the freezer, and the day before my trip, I'll toss one or two in the cooler and seal it up. When it comes time to pack the cooler, I swap those out for fresh bottles. When the cooler is already pre-chilled inside, your ice doesn't melt nearly as fast.

Plastic ice cream containers make good containers to make block ice. Block ice lasts longer than cubes. If you know somebody in the medical field most doctor offices get some medicine in styrofoam ice chests with those reusable gel freeze packs. I've gotten enough to fill up my freezer and 4 of my old 48 quart igloos. Might be in my head but they seem to stay frozen and keep cold longer than ice. I get free ice and haven't used it in years. The styrofoam coolers the doctor offices get they also throw away and most are around 2 inches thick. Make great throw away or giveaway coolers.
@instantsiv
@instantsiv 5 лет назад
There's some kind of phase change something or another in those gel freeze packs. Something about it absorbing heat first before it starts to melt. Or it melts and then starts to absorb heat... But yeah.

I'm sorry to be negative, but it's important to note that most supermarket water bottles are not supposed to be re-used this way, because the plastic they use in manufacture is not chemically stable nor meant for re-use. In other words, cheap plastic bottles may leach plasitic processing toxins into your frozen drinking water. If you're just using the bottles to freeze water that keeps things cold in the cooler, no problem. But don't drink it if you're concerned about toxins in your water. Drinking one or two bottles is unlikely to hurt you, but doing this often could be a problem.

I dont like to ever buy single use stuff in plastic , such a waste so I wouldnt use plastic water bottles either but I have slowly collected a bunch of small stainless steel drinking bottles (normally pretty expensive but they turn up in thrift stores all the time for next to nothing) so i throw a half dozen of those in my cooler and have water and ice all in one. there is always a way around plastic! I am ok with the stuff if its something that wiull be used for a long time then recycled but single use drink containers......why are we doing that guys! they will be here for thousands of years after we had our drink from them.

Big deal. Do you know what they put in hamburger meat and do you know what food manufacturers and the govt. will allow in meat and vegetable processing, believe me you don't want to know. Pick 20 items at random from your grocery store and make sure you add some body soap, shampoo and conditioner and read the ingredients, how much are unsafe chemicals and known carcinogens. Did you know aluminum has been linked to alzheimers, how many beers and sodas do we consume every year? So I say big deal, another unsafe product.

Buy and use refreezable cooler packs, found in every supermarket or outdoors store. They hold their freeze longer than plain water and can be used multiple times. There is no leeching of toxic plastive chemicals into your drinking water, unlike frozen water bottles.

you have to leave the lids off, but it works possibly even better with metal bottles they seem to stay cold just a bit longer than plastic. its amazing how freezing water can destroy a steel bottle though if you dont take the lid off! I fill them 3/4 full or a little more than that and it works well.

the best way for making ice is to fill the plastic bottle with water and then freeze it. Once ice is formed and solid (24 hours later) you have to destroy the bottle and take out the ice. Problem solved.
