It’s the recurring case of some not-so-many-happy returns… after a growing number of brands including Zara and H&M have started charging customers for returning clothing items purchased online, despite 90% of shoppers thinking it’s unreasonable. And Returns costs aside - last week popular clothing brand PrettyLittleThing came under fire for reportedly BANNING customers with a high return rate, for life! So, is it right that shoppers are penalised for returning items? And what are your consumer rights when it comes to online returns? Alice Beer joins us to tell us more, as well as revealing the secret ways that could help you avoid paying for returns, for the foreseeable.

I'm so glad sizing was mentioned and that is why I order online. I'm an XS and it's always the size that sells out the quickest yet they don't increase the amount on the racks so I have no option but to order online. The annoying thing is too is that an XS in shop 1 isn't the same fit as in shop 2, the same with brands. It's so annoying. This is why I order online and send things back.

@@ASHERZ7167 I think that's perfectly OK, it's those who buy, wear and return goods as part of their something-for-nothing mindset that makes me raise a disapproving eyebrow. You're absolutely right about wild variations in sizing. It's a pain in the proverbial.

Every time I go into a store my size is sold out. Every single time. They never stock enough of the larger sizes.

I had a colleague who would buy clothes (online as well as from shops) wear them once and return them. I always thought that was close to theft. She was quite boastful about it.

@@LindaC616 I don't understand why some people seem proud of doing dodgy stuff like that. On the other hand, when they do it's a useful pointer to avoid any social interaction and definitely marks them out as dishonest and untrustworthy.

It is because of dishonest people like her, honest people have to suffer. I do not blame stores charging for returns. In fact they should charge more and this may stop people misusing online shopping.

@@HJJSL-bl8kk exactly. The need to be able to pretend that you have money you don't, to impress people, instead of being who you are with dignity, does indeed tell people something about you.

She could have saved even more money..especially on returns..by renting or getting them on loan from some stores who have that option..

Shut the stores (massive money making operation) and now, charge people for HAVING to return items!!!

This "expert" is wrong - under the consumer rights act of 2015, goods which are not fit for purpose, not a satisfactory quality or not as described can be returned within 30 days and the retailer must refund the shipping costs by LAW.
@jisoo1571
@jisoo1571 3 дня назад
You’re missing the keywords “not fit for purpose” “not satisfactory quality” and “not as described” are qualifiers. Most people return because they’ve changed their mind, they’ve bought something else, the size isn’t right etc. Those are not legal rights to return if bought in person which is what she is referring to. (online returns is different obviously)
@SouthpawShorts
@SouthpawShorts 10 дней назад
Those return prices are probably vastly lower than the charges the courier are applying to the retailer. The money has to come from somewhere.

I shop online as I'm housebound, I needed to return some slippers to Shoezone that were too tight but these can only be returned via one of their stores!! If I want to return them I can return them to the head office but I will be charged! As I do not have a printer I can't use this option as you need to print off a label It's very poor customer service making it difficult for the disabled to return online goods! especially for those of us that have to rely on online shopping! Now I have to check what the return policy with companies is before I make a purchase. Companies should put a prepaid label in the parcels they send out!

Title of the video is misleading...returning to the physical store isn't possible for an online only retailer is it? And many retailers are online only these days

I don’t mind paying a little for postage - once I had to pay £6 though and that was excessive imo. Postage is expensive, so under £3 is reasonable to me. I usually shop in person and only buy what’s not available in store except for bras because the closest store that sells my size is 2 hours away and that’s just not reasonable to me.

fyi if you return an online order to yours clothing store they still charge a restocking fees

A lot of clothes look completely different in person compared to the image displayed online, this includes colour, fabric, and fit. This should be taken into account. There are fitting rooms in physical stores, this is not available online, obviously, so you require a means to try on. Charging for returns may impact the environment further by consumers keeping clothes unsuitable and then disposing of them. If certain items are constantly returned with reasons, this provides feedback to the retailer about issues with such items. Many online stores charge more than physical shops, add on shipping paid to receive, and now to return, I personally agree with the 90+%.

Furthermore, consider making cities more accessible to shoppers by reducing parking costs and encouraging commerce.

Online stores save a lot of money by not having the running costs of high street stores. I don’t think free returns is unreasonable, since you don’t have the luxury of seeing/ trying the item in person

Who is this snooty “expert” with a school headmistress tone at the general public. Online shopping is such a let down due to poor product sizing explanations and inconsistency. Brands should do much better with specific measurements of the clothes for each item and much better videos. Also don’t say something is lined if it’s only partially lined etc. most of my multiple purchases is because I don’t know what I will receive. Why is this annoying woman blaming consumers who are responsible for the brand’s success?
@HoneyBumblebee300

I also think stores should share information about who has been banned for misuse so they are prevented from doing it again with a different store / supplier.
@CatsandJP
@CatsandJP 10 дней назад
That’s invasive of privacy..it could be confidential between stores to share their information…but definitely not to the public…it’s not a criminal offence.
