Backboring refers to a process where a shotgun barrel is reamed out to remove excessive pitting. Watch along as Larry Potterfield, Founder and CEO of MidwayUSA, walks through this interesting process using a set of reamers, a T-handle, and a set of Parker shotgun barrels.

What does backboring in this fashion do to the chokes? It seems it would take a full choke and reduce it to a cylinder choke. What am I missing

John Miller You simply stop the back bore operation as the reem contacts the choke constriction.

John Miller this is for smooth barrel shotguns

Choke is removed if you exit the muzzle. It's not that hard to ream for threaded or fixed chokes.

In a previous video of yours, you backbore another shotgun using a jig which makes use of polishing stones (RU-vid video: "Gunsmithing - Repairing Pitting in a Shotgun Barrel"). What are the advantages/disadvantages of using a series of metal reamers to backbore barrels as opposed to a jig with polishing stones?

Deep pits are not removed by polishing, Back boring gives a reliable bore diameter from start to finish. Polishing a bore helps reduce wad fouling and improve consistency between shots and in the field

You can remove some pits with the stone in a fixture I have one you can remove pits with a series of stone .002 or .003 after the pits are removed you polish with a fine 400 stone

how does Pitting in a barrel occur? Is it due to rust, wrong munition?
@nathan47911
@nathan47911 8 лет назад
+elitex2211 Rust. modern munitions are noncorrosive, however if the powder residue is left for extended periods it does cause problems.

Yes, rust and that could come in some cases from improper cleaning after black powder, Or corrosive power and or primers in some case.

That's a lot of metal to remove from very old Damascus barrels, if you plan to relay that separated rib and use the gun.

So barrell inner diameters are larger..what now? Sleeves?
@gunsmith549

No, the larger bore diameter will help patterns actually.

@@LandersWorkshop That's right, the cost of replacing the mass produced parts of a semi auto firearm vs. a gunsmith's cost of working on a firearm doesn't justify the expense of the gunsmith. Old double guns are different. You can't just find new barrels or parts a qualified gunsmith will have to make or renew the gun that you have. Hope this makes sense!
