We are talking about everything I do to bait a swarm trap. We cover how to apply propolis to the frame rest the corners of the trap and the bottom. The placement of the brood comb. The one thing you do not do is put the lure into the swarm trap until you are ready to hang the trap because you want the lure to be fresh not however many days till you hang it old.

somebody didn't tell the swarms I caught there had to be propolis in the swarm trap...they moved in anyway!!!

As I stated in the comments EVERY small detail matters and ups your chances. I had much rather hang a trap and have an 80% chance to catch a swarm than leave it out and only have a 70% chance.

In that study by O'Shea he states: "with workers being better equipped for sensory investigation and threat response using their right antenna and eye"..... One could also conclude that approaching a hive from the right side as you are facing it would result in lesser aggression from guard bees. Pretty cool study!

Question From Aussie down under, so how do you stop wax moths going to town in your swarm trap? Thx for the video!

i do not have problems with them from march till may after the first of week or 2 of may then i seem to have problems with them. i really do not care if they eat it up because its the old comb im rotating out so its going either to them or the solar wax melter.in the winter i spray my combs with www.arbico-organics.com/product/monterey-bt-liquid-concentrate/pest-solver-guide-caterpillars-moths non toxic to bees and their larvae and its only last for 3 to 4 months and its gone by the time i need them again. i also store my traps this way ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-muzwEmY2-qc.html thanks for watching. what part Australia ive got friends in Perth and at the foot of the blue mountains?

To naturally help control/reduce the wax moth population around your hive, place around the beehive ceramic pots with draining holes, turned upside down, or use other hiding things (such as a concrete block with the holes pointing up with a tile covering most of the hole except for a small entrance) for lizards to make their home around your beehive. Once the lizards see a wax moth flying around, they will try to catch it for sure.

it was great way better than swarm commander but sadly the 2 developers had a massive falling out and they can not make it for sale. they make it for themselves and thats it. i can not and believe me i have tried to get the one i know to give me a bottle. that said im back to swarm commander.

That is a very intelligent way of doing it! I've watched a lot of bee videos and I've never seen it done like your way before. Question: What is the recipe for your anise oil spray and your recipe for your sugar water in the jar? Thank you so much! You're very helpful to us "NewBEES"! I've subscribed and liked all of your videos so far! You should start a Bee School, I would pay to learn from you!
@WoolieBsApiary
@WoolieBsApiary 3 года назад
i buy the anise oil at walmart in the baking isle its 1/2 of the bottle to 1 to 1 sugar water in a quart spray bottle. the sugar water in the jar is about 1 1/2 to 1. heres a tip thats not in the videos in early spring when you are looking for the bees they are interested in survival so they like the higher sugar content in spring after the swarm they want 1 to 1 to build comb with. i do 1 to 1 schools mostly in the summer and fall im really busy from march through 1st week of july when i harvest honey. i sell queens and nucs along with swarm trapping along with mentoring through my local bee club. thanks for watching.

I use swarm traps similar to this one. I’ve also seen where you use Nuc boxes. What determines which one you use when/where?
@WoolieBsApiary
@WoolieBsApiary 3 года назад
for swarm traps i use these 7 deep frame with 6 inches of open space below them which equals 10 to 11 liters. i use Nucs because i sell nucs in the spring and summer. i also make honey in nucs the nice thing about that is i get different flavors of honey. they will fill a 5 frame medium and cap it in no time. out of 120 ish hives i have maybe 30 8 frame deep hives and all the rest are 5 or 6 frame nucs. thanks for watching

Phil Chandler beats me, but it’s certainly possible! Interestingly enough, when pilots are crashing when trying to land on aircraft carries, they tend to turn left, that’s why control islands are they n the right of the ship. I wonder if we all have an instinct that right is good, left is bad? And no, not making any political statement there... In WEII the Japanese had their islands on the left, and returning pilots tended to crash into them with some regularity...

excellent focus on the little details I have not heard before about swarm traps, thanks. BTW I like your paint job. My traps are paint to "blend in" as well but yours are better. I have told others why I do mine this way, but I am curious why you painted your hives the way you did? They looked very nice, yes I did subscribe. great data and no bs.

Robert the small details can make a HUGE difference. i do not want people to see my traps so i try to make them blend into the tree line or wherever i place them. i share what i learn from trial and error or from successful beeks. Thanks for watching

An old comb of brood with some honey (kept frozen while awaiting to be used) is the best swarm lure, period. I tried water sugar in an empty hive, lemongrass oil, swarm commander, and nothing, but once I placed an old comb of brood in the empty hive with honey leftovers in the open cells (the comb was kept in a freezer for storage), two days later, a small swarm had moved in (in early August). Don't waste you money on any lures, just get or buy an old brood comb from someone, if you wish to catch a swarm, but also make sure you do it during swarm season, not just when you feel like it.
@WoolieBsApiary

if you want ants in your swarm trap put the honey in there. keep watching the series of videos and you will see the comb being put in it and the propolis i put in the box.

I just melt it in water only,caught lots off swarm lure only,never even 1 off of lgo ,I DO BELIEVE PROPOLIS HELPS,BUT DEFINETLY NOT A MUST,but it definitely is better because think of ALL the bees u see check out empty equipment that don't have nothing but PROPOLIS.If u have nothing else wax and dead bees is better than nothing.Good Advice Though For Sure
@WoolieBsApiary
@WoolieBsApiary 5 лет назад
I agree but the small details can make the difference in just being checked out and them moving in. During my trials of different ways to prepair my swarm traps the ones with propolis they move in vs a trap 30 yards away with everything the exact same except propolis. The same goes for swarm commander vs lemongrass oil.

Damn, Lanford!, I've been using my good Vodka. I also melt wax and put Lemon oil into the melted wax and rub it in the box with good results.
