How to bake Polymer Clay for Beginners

Hey everybody!
I got so many questions on how to bake polymer clay so I decided to make a short video about it. It covers what polymer clay actually is and why you have to bake it. I will show you what things you will need and some tips on the process! I hope you will find it helpful!
Things you will need:
Oven
Oven thermometer (optional, if you have a good oven that has accurate temperature)
Oven-tray
Foil/baking paper
Step by step:
Put your creations on a small sheet of baking of foil or baking paper and then on the oven-tray
Look for the recommended baking temperature on the clay and preheat it to this degree
After preheating put the clay on the tray in the oven, centring it on the middle rack for even heating
Look for the recommended baking time and bake it that long
Open the windows to ensure fresh air
Turn off the oven and put on oven gloves to put out the oven-tray
Wrap around a towel to slowly cool down the clay
Is there an alternative to baking the clay?
Yes!
You can use air drying clay!
DO NOT USE THE MICROWAVE (except it is clay that is made for microwaves like Fimo air microwave)
If you have any questions, feel free to ask me!
Have a wonderful week!
~mako

When it comes to thermal shocking your polymer clay, I move polymer clay straight from the oven to a bowl of ice water, it hardens the polymer clay even more and brings out translucence better. I have never gotten any cracks or anything and the creations never seem to break! You can look it up on videos, I know some users have reviews on the technique. :3

So happy that it helped you! And thank you for asking me, if I could make such a video! I would have never thought about that. But I think it can help some people that are new to polymer clay. Oh, and also, I wouldn't use random cheap polymer clay. X_X I once bought something and it stank SO horrible. I never ever used it again....

Thank you so much! I'm glad you like my videos! You basically just need some glaze that works with polymer clay and a brush, if the glaze doesn't come with a brush. And then you just glaze it like you would paint it on and let it dry. :)

I use fimo soft and it is really to let behind finger prints. What helps is to use gloves so you don't have any fingerprints or you can use harder clay like fimo classic. It is harder to work with, but you leave less fingerprints behind. But I also try to smooth everything out and/or blur everything! And yes, you can use chalk pastels for painting as well, if you want to make like cookies a bit more realistic. But you would usually use acrylic paint for the colouration!

The difference is that fimo effect has different effects like it can get a little bit translucent or has nice glitter in it or it can glow in the dark. Fimo light and basic are almost the same. They harden on the air and there are only 2 different colours I think. The main difference is that fimo light is for objects where weight is an issue. Fimo classic and soft are almost the same. Fimo classic is harder to knead and soft is much softer. I use Fimo soft because it is the easiest to use! :)

I would choose the lowest temperature that you can find on the package and bake it at the average time. Or maybe the longest time. Let's say the one clay says 20 mins, the other one 30. So I would bake it 30 min, because 10 mins more wouldn't damage the other clay. Because it is more important at what temperature you are baking than the time. :)

Polyvinylchloride (PVC) is extremely toxic and I would not bake in any oven used for food (even much later) as leaves a coating/film on the oven which then can send off fumes that will get into food.
@Makoccino
@Makoccino 12 лет назад
I would bake it at the recommended temperature and just wait about 30 min. If it has not harden enough, I would just bake it longer. The important thing is to don't bake it at a higher temperature. So it is okay if you bake it 30 min or longer, even if you have a part that is only 3 mm thick, because the time is just the minimum. So as long as you keep the temperature, you can bake it longer!

No, most of the polymer clays are meant to be baked in the oven. But Fimo has a clay that is for the microwave. It is stated on the package. But usually you can't use microwave for polymer clay.

Just bake for 10 mins first at 275 or 250 f and increase by 5 until its fully hardened and let it cool down in between because when its warm it will be a little softer than when its cold

AGStyleStars The clay is non-toxic but you still shouldn't bake the clay with food at the same time! So as long as you don't do that, you can use the oven for food as well! Also I would recommend leaving the oven open when you put the creation out. Just in case!

Hi, I'm having a hard time deciding the length of time. It's my first time and I don't want to mess up my project. The packaging (Premo) says 30 degrees celsius per 6 mm, but what do I do with the project is more 3D? The dimensions are about 40 mm x 18 x 28 (L x H x W). Should I go with the 40mm (= 3.5 hours, which seems extreme for something that looks so small). OR do I calculate the cubic measurements? Sorry for the long questions but would really like some help please! :(
@primo6790
@primo6790 7 лет назад
julieee I'm not sure if you solved your problem yet but I'll answer anyway. I would certainly bake it longer than the 30 minutes but probably not as long as 3 hours. Just as something to note, I've heard many people get better results if they bake their creations for longer than the recommended time, and I'm sure you can bake your creation for hours as long as it doesn't exceed the recommended baking temperature. The moment your temperature reaches or exceeded the burning temperature, (which is usually 350° F), that's when you should start worrying. But if you are using light colors, you might get some discoloration or slight browning the longer you keep your clay in the oven. TL:DR - As long as you don't have to use the oven to cook something within the time frame of you baking your creation and as long as you don't reach the burning temperature, your creation should be fine to bake for a few hours. Q
@primo6790
@primo6790 7 лет назад
julieee But also note that your clay (Premo) might have a lower burning temperature than 350° F, be extra careful and check. Burning the clay won't release any toxic fumes but it will release very foul smell.

@noticemegenki6049

Brittany Truman you'd have to give the oven time for the fumes to escape completely. So if you need the oven to make food that day do not use it to bake clay. Also never bake clay onto a baking sheet you are going to use for food. Keep the trays for food separate from the ones you use for clay.

Yeah, I find Fimo expensive here as well, therefore I buy it on ebay. Some shops sell a block for 1,50 € and usually you pay 2,50 € in a craft store. Which clay do you normally use? I also wanted to try the Fimo air because you get SO much clay and much cheaper...
@Makoccino
@Makoccino 12 лет назад
I would bake it at the lowest temperature you can find on the package and bake it the average baking time. But I would suggest 30 mins as well. Let it cool down and if it is still too soft, put it in the oven and bake it a little bit (5 mins) and let it cool down again!
