How to Balance Band Saw Wheels

In this video I explain in detail how to balance a band saw wheel without cutting or drilling material from the wheel. This will cause damage and the wheel could lose integrity. When the machine is shaking and vibrating it may cause damage to the machine.

I owned an industrial machine supply and repair service for nearly 40 years. In repairing countless bandsaws over the years I balanced the pulley wheels the exact same way. This is the first RU-vid video I have seen where balancing is done correctly. I see videos of folks drilling holes in the pulleys to balance them. This hurts the structural integrity of the pulley wheel and permanently damages it whether the pulley is balanced or not. It is much easier to add or subtract weight by balancing the pulley like an automobile tire. Great and informative video!!!👍

Thank you very much for your comments. I totally agree with you and you would be amazed at how much criticism that I have received doing it (the correct way).

@@PawPawsWorkShop Yup… ya get criticism from those least in the know. My reply to them is to ask how auto tires are balanced. Do they drill holes in the wheel or add weights?

One thing for folks to be aware of on Ridgid bandsaws and others. This bandsaw was licensed for manufacturer by TTI. This conglomerate of manufacturing facilities makes most of the power tools we use today; whether they are Delta, Craftsman, Ryobi, Milwaukee, Porter Cable, General Machinery, Delta, Grizzly and the list goes on and on. If you have a Ridgid bandsaw, many of the parts from other brands will work quite well. Some of the parts for Ridgid bandsaw are no longer available and this would include other brands that have the same part. So, you’ll have to use some ingenuity to make repairs like what Paw Paw did for this bandsaw. However, in this case a blade tensioner from Porter Cable would have worked very well. I must laugh when I hear how Ridgid saws are pieces of junk and folks look to another brand. Take a look at the design of the other similar brand designs and you will see they are very similar, if not identical to the Ridgid. They all use basically the same parts. The only differences are cosmetic; paint, a different cabinet, decals, etc. SO, PNA to what brand is better than the other. They all come off the same production line.

I did the same thing to my band saw. I used self adhesive weights I got at Harbor freight. I replaced the rubber belt that came with the saw (Ridgid) with a linked belt (also from HF). Additionally I replaced the rubber tires on the two tracking wheels. Made a world of difference.

Wrap soft wire solder around the periphery of the wheel opposite the heavy spot till the wheel is balanced - adding or removing solder as needed. When balanced, un-wrap the solder from the wheel, fold it and glue/epoxy to the inside of the wheel. I used that method to balance the horiz drive-shaft on the 1941 SB 9A lathe I am rebuilding. Worked beautifully. The method in the video doesn't compensate for the weight of the clips.

I too had a 14” bandsaw, I will be posting a video of it shortly. I ended up going with the fenner power twist belts. They reduce vibration quite a bit! I would suggest looking into them for this. It appears that the upper bearing may need some lubrication here as well. Great video, thanks for sharing!

I balanced my pulleys a similar way. I used a piece of scotch tape and sheetrock screws to obtain the balance, Sheet rock screws are very light and by adding one or two after a spin of the pulley gave me a fine tune. I then took all the screws and weighed them on my reloading grain scale. I had stick on tire balance weights that I weight on the grain scale . It took two and a part of another and after sticking them on my pulley I was through balancing the wheel. Very little vibration while running my saw now.

There's a problem with bearing friction in your balancing process,the wheel should rock back and forth at the heaviest point before settling. I have been balancing plan-grinding stones for years.Your video is a great initiative and is absolutely relevant. Instead of clips, use double-sided cello tape, this will make the weight-factor of the clips, negligible. Thumps-up.

there is obvious bearing drag dampening the stop of the wheel but your multiple spins still shows the area that is heavy. Those clamps have weight so they rightfully should be included in the total weight added. But you achieved better balance, even though perhaps not exacting because the clamp weights were omitted.

Thanks for your helpful video. As you rightly point out, drilling holes to balance the wheel is not a good idea since it reduces the strength of the wheel. To temporarily position the weights, I would suggest using double-sided tape. When you use clips, they add their own weight and reduce the positioning accuracy. The weight of the epoxy that finally replaces the double-sided tape will be very close to the weight of the double-sided tape.

I like to start with putty that has lead shot kneaded into it. The putty will stick on well enough to establish exactly how much weight needs to be added and where... then remove the putty/shot mixture, weigh it, and add exactly that much permanent lead weight to the spot you removed the putty/shot from.

Regarding it being “noisy” at the beginning of the video.... Your guide blocks are too tight, or the blade is a cheap blade and the weld isn’t ground down enough. In extreme cases this can cause head bounce.

Thank you very much. Keep in mind that this is a very low end bandsaw. You will most likely have to balance the wheels. It is difficult to resaw on it. The blade wants to wander no matter how I adjust it. The saw works for me mainly because I do not use the band saw that much. If you are planning to use it a lot I would strongly consider upgrading to a better saw.

hello sir, thank you for the tips. I would suggest that the weight of the clip could be offset by adding just a clip to the opposite side of each one that way only the weight of the lead is being accounted for. it also seemed that the bearing needed some graphite or the screw was still a bit too tight as the stop of the fly wheel was rather sudden. i'm currently looking for band saw for resawing purposes. have you installed or know if a riser would work on your saw from HF?

Current price on the Central Machinery floor standing band saw is $374 and change plus tax.. For the same money and an afternoon spent at a school or other auction ( or searching CL or FBMP), you could have bought a vintage US made Delta or other brand band saw and not had balance, quality control or other issues. Getting a Hernia loading it into the truck might be the only big down side to that strategy Had my CM machine vibrated that bad out of the box, it would have gone back to the store and I would have demanded a new one and kept on returning them until one functioned properly. Ofd course, if you've already been through 3 or 4 of them, then I guess it's time to use Paw Paw's technique, I checked the wheels on both the bench top and floor standing Taiwanese made Craftsman band saw duo I currently have and neither of them showed any signs of imbalance...and they're over 40 years old.

The Chinese motors, like those from harbor freight, have notoriously terrible centrifugal switches. They also usually have an open frame motor on them. So, a little bit of dust gets on the contacts, not allowing it to start. Check the switch by blowing the motor cover out with air. If that doesn’t work, pull the cover on that side and spray the switch down with contact cleaner. While you have the motor cover off, spray the moving parts of the switch down with some silicone spray. After you blast all the cosmoline goo off with contact cleaner. If you have a meter, check the continuity on the switch. It should have continuity one way or the other. You also may need to move the switch slightly to get the circuit to open or close properly. The other likely candidate would be the capacitor on the switch. If you have a DMM with with cap test, you can test it that way. You can also check the cap by using an ohm meter. Put the leads on in one direction and watch the needle or readout. If it does nothing, reverse the leads. If it then starts to climb, the cap is most likely good. Although this is not the best way of diagnosing, it will do in a pinch. My money is on dirty contacts on centrifugal switch contacts. Some of the cosmoline hf spreads on their tools to keep them glued together, may have melted off the shaft or bearings, causing your contact issues. This all may sound difficult or daunting, but, it is fairly simple. Make sure your cap is discharged and your unit is unplugged. Hope you get or got it fixed!

@PawPawsWorkShop

It would make very little difference in this type of application. If it were a much larger and heavier type of equipment it would make a greater impact. After the wheel is balanced the next biggest improvements would be new tires and new belt for the motor.

But does different manufacturers blade connection method/ width throws this out the window. I mean if i go from a top shelf 1/8" blade to a 3rd party 3/8" blade AND seam placement have that much affect? What about seam placement apples to apples?
@PawPawsWorkShop
@PawPawsWorkShop 8 месяцев назад
No, the physics are the same. The width of the blade will determine the exact placement on the wheel. Different manufacturers have slightly different methods for adjustments but the basic principles are the same.

Good video, thanks! I've been having a vibration issue with mine that is driving me mad. Shakes like a fat woman twerking on a folding card table 🤪 I added link belts but it continued. Tightened the belts as I thought they may be a bit sloppy and it helped. I was running it at 1582 fpm and changing it to 1080 fpm additionally helped. I have to admit way too many modifications on a new machine! Can I ask what speed you are running?

At least with drilling holes, you won't have to worry about the weights coming unglued. A short sidebar about proper surface preparation for the weights and wheels might have been helpful once the proper weight and location had been determined.

@@PawPawsWorkShop I'm sure . I wasn't clear with my question. Does vertical imbalance cause the majority of the vibration?
@PawPawsWorkShop
@PawPawsWorkShop 5 лет назад
There actual are a number of reasons that can cause the vibration. You must start with one and continue to solve each issue. The wheels, the tires, bearing, pulleys, and the belt on the pulley. How the machine sits on the floor even can cause problems. It is a lot of trial and error to solve the problems.

What about the weight of the epoxy which replaces them? Also the results speak for them selves.
@deadwoodturning8804
@deadwoodturning8804 5 лет назад
Yes they do! The method works, but then you should have weighed the collective mas of the clips and the weights and then glued on additional weight to account for the clips. The epoxy does have some weight, but its not even close to how much the clips weigh.

Is the nut supposed that holds the wheel on supposed to be loose while doing this or snugged up like when the bandsaw is operating? And what if you ever need to get the weights off later down the road or if you mess up? Easy to remove?

What would you do if the wheel spins back 1" regardless of how the wheel is rotated when you let go?

That sounds like a heavy side of the wheel. If it constantly goes to the same place each time that shows a definite heavy point.
@909sickle
@909sickle 3 года назад
@@PawPawsWorkShop It would always move about 1", always landing in different places. I removed the wheel from the bandsaw and did find a heavy side, so I balanced it. It did seem to help a little with vibration. I dressed the blade and helped a little more. I removed the bottom wheel, but not sure how to balance that one, since it's keyed and driven directly by a shaft (has no bearing). But it does seem fairly well balanced already. I've never seen anyone have a test for side to side balance (i.e. tilt). You'd think if the front side was heavier than the back side that would cause vibration, but perhaps not. I got new blades from TimberWolf and they're vibrating like crazy. They sent me replacements and they're better, but still vibrate a lot. My other blades don't vibrate much, so I'm not sure if TimberWolf blades have issues or if it's just because they're heavier.

I've got this same bandsaw that I picked up about 3 months ago. It works perfectly in a hobby shop, and the price point means I can mod it out however I want without feeling like I'm risking a big financial loss if I mess something up. I've already done quite a few upgrades to mine, including replacing the cast iron table with a larger wooden platform with a fence system. I can easily re-saw 5.5" hardwood Mine is also out of balance, but it's not a big deal and hasn't messed up my work in any way I couldn't overcome. I just just my re-saws a little proud then clean them up at the jointer and planer. I'll be correcting the wheel balance in the next few weeks. All in all, this is a great machine for a hobby shop, but you have to be willing to do some tweaking/tuning to get it perfect. But it's like Paw Paw said...HF don't make great tools. Literally everything I've bought from there has needed some form of tuning, but the price point makes it worth the effort.

This was my question too. So you think the weight of the epoxy used is fairly close to the weight of the clips? I guess if you wanted to be sure you could weigh those using something very accurate like a powder scale and use enough epoxy to equal the weight of the clips. Not sure it’s necessary with the results you got.
