I am first gen farmer I work a full time job in town as mechanic for county it so hard time to have enough time to get everything done the worst part I go to work and all I think about is the farm and things I need to do I get off of work. I go up to the farm. I’m so jacked up from thinking about it all day I work till 9 pm then I go home eat something take a shower and go to bed five days a week then on my two days off I spend 12 hours a day in the winter, getting myself ready for harvest. I am single and I know that I’ve never going to meet someone because all I do is work the good news is I love to farm and in 5 more years I can retire at my day job and start farming full time

Hey I appreciate having the price of milk on the show being a dairy farmer. Class 3 milk is for cheese production and class 4 is for butter production. 17.95 milk is a pretty mediocre price.

I raise hogs for a "natural" pork company, there's definitely alot of aspects to consider in regards to what is best for the animal. Such as when we had that brutal blizzard that went down to -42 windchill a few weeks back (I'm fairly close to you guys), it would've been better for my hogs to be in a confinement, guaranteed. Didn't lose any, no one got sick and had plenty of bedding, but there is no arguing that in that environment, a confinement is better. An outside portion of a pen got blocked off with snow from one side to the other, had to make a path with the skidloader to the barn so they could get to the feeder and waterer. Although, much of the time in "average" conditions, I'm torn on what the "best" for the animal is. I think of where I'd rather be. In a high stocking density environment laying on bare concrete my whole life with nothing to chew on/root when I was literally designed for that, or enough room in a concrete pen to run around, and I can lay down on cornstalks. I think about putting up a confinement, but the absence of bedding and high stocking density are the killers for me. I love the environmental control, though. I have a farrowing house with 6x12 bedded pens (no crates) with an lb white heater and stainless steel cup/nipple waterers. I love that building, but I also like pasture farrowing when the weather is nicer. But, when you get a cold snap and you see a newborn pig that's dead and stuck to the inside of a hut, it makes you think twice about pasture farrowing, though. I've thought about making a confinement building like the old-school ones, where it was sloped concrete, with slats at the bottom. If I had crossbeams on the floor of the pens of sufficient height to avoid spillover, I could hold bedding in the upper part of the pens except for what they put in their mouths and get to the downhill side. Interesting aspect about that is, I THINK that would still abide by all protocols of the company I sell to. It's protocol is a maximum of 25% slats, and I don't think there is a protocol that they have to see daylight. But the whole daylight thing that some people bring up, I don't even know if that matters. I really don't think a hog cares about that. They care about being fed, watered, an ideal temp., and to be able to chew on something and lay down on something soft.

Thank you for adding in milk futures. I believe right now 18.75 is about break even. It was up to 25 in 2022 for a few months.

Beast milk is a great business if you have extra. Wife's friend in iowa sold all she could produce. Did it for over 3 years non stop.

I thoroughly enjoyed your podcast. I especially enjoyed when you said it’s hard for you to enjoy the small things in life. I have the same problem when you were describing yourself you were describing me also. I find it very difficult to enjoy the things in life that other people enjoy my brain never shuts off. I’m always working I love to work. It makes me happy in my relationships. The opposite is the balance. I hope that makes sense. I’m glad you can see what your fiancé sees, there’s your happiness y’all keep up the good work

One question that I have is what will you do with the separated manure in terms of storage while waiting to spread it? Would it be a feasible option to modify your old hog barn pits as a form of storage space so you don’t have to get rid of all that concrete?

Favorite Bourbon? I have never been good at taking the day off. If I am home I am working. The only way I could ever not work was to leave town. I would schedule 3 trips throughout the year.
