I used to be into this years ago. I wish I would have thought to keep it east-side heavy, would have saved me a lot of head aches!!

Good quality presentation. Here is my tip for the balance bar, I use a section of 1” wide steel measuring tape and mark the weight position onto it then on the back side of the steel tape I can describe the combination of gear that is mounted. The velcro strap around the Celestron GPS is a perfect place to hold the steel tape when it is not used.

Thank you for the simple tip of "off-balancing". I had heard something about it, but was never explained how. "Slightly heavy on the EAST" works!!

Good video, thanks. I watched to make sure I was doing it right (I was) but that's a good tip about east heavy. Question, is that reflective tape around the counterweights or just simple white tape? Either way, good idea for finding a dark toe stubber in the dark.

Good video on balancing. You did not mention the reason for balancing with the scope pointed north and the counter weights at the end of the bar. Doing it like this helps to prevent possible damage to the telescope and equipment because if it is highly out of balance it will "fall back" to a north pointing neutral position. The east heavy balancing trick is good but does not always necessarily apply. If your equipment is at a remote location there is generally not a way to easily adjust the counterweights, this is why I prefer adjust the backlash for minimum amount and balance for best balance. Remote imaging will also likely require not using the first frame after a meridian flip until the guiding has restabilized.

Hi! I just got a Celestron Astromaster 130EQ and is there some sort of bag of big suitcase where I can store the telescope in?

I notice during your RA balancing you seem to keep both weights touching each other. I have several friends that use various brands of mounts and some of them seem to always balance their mounts with one weight at the bottom and the top weight somewhere between halfway up the balance bar and as far up as they can get it or if they can't get it to balance with the bottom one all the way down, they'll put the top one as far up as they can and then move the bottom one up where they need to, but they never seem to use them both together. Is there some reason for this that you know of? Great video by the way!!

Have Celestron changed the colour of their larger OTAs? Recent years they have been made in white (as in your video) but this year the ones have seen - 1100 & 1400 - seem to be a very light grey / off white colour? Can you confirm that please? Thanks

Great video! I do the exact same thing with some tape for faster balancing. It´s a very good tip! I have a question about east weight balancing: Does this tip apply to every type of ecuatorial mount? Is there any brand or model that fixes this problem?
@CelestronDotCom
@CelestronDotCom 4 года назад
This is generally true of all equatorial mounts, though most fork mounted scopes on an EQ wedge can be balanced in declination only. There are no adjustments for balance in R.A. This is a problem that will affect the gears on any German EQ mount, no matter the brand or the model.

Hi, thanks for the video. I am a beginner so plse forgive basic questions. When you say to make the RA axis slightly heavy in the east (to asssit with backlash) does that mean heavy as in the OTA going downwards and the weights upwards, or the OTA going upwards and the weights downwards? Thanks
@CelestronDotCom
@CelestronDotCom 3 года назад
Whatever is on the East side of the mount. If the tube is on the east side of the mount, the tube should be heavy and moving downward slightly. If your counterweights are on the east side of the mount, you make them heavier so they move downward.

I think I’m balanced in RA but when I try to balance in DEC it keeps slowly falling to the left. I’ve got my C8 Edge pushed extremely far forward on the saddle. I’m trying to balance the 2600 on it as well…what would you suggest?

Should it be re-balanced again if you swap the eyepiece out to replace it with a (heavier) DSLR-camera?

its honestly not too hard for an entire video to explain, all celestrons have All-Star PA which makes the PA procedure easy.

Vid seems to be based on Northern Hemisphere. For those in the south, would this be the reverse, e.g. basically north, and west heavy ?

@@camrun2011 I checked out the iceinspace forum. Apparently, even tho we polar align with Octans ( south ), the mount still needs to be slightly east heavy.

Will changing the balance on the west side not knock your mount and cause disruptions to your image?
@jcarroll276

I'm no expert but you should probably not do this while imaging. Moving the weights between shots is probably the best idea

Dear Celestron, why is my mount so stiff i can even tell if its balanced or not? Feels like breaks being appiled rather then it bounce up and down to proper balance 😀. (CGX-L)

you have to undo the clutches, theyre made for that, if you pull while its like that, you will damage the mount.

shouldn't the balancing be done with all wires connected since they also apply weight?
@CelestronDotCom

Yes, you want to load your telescope with everything you will use (including cables) before you balance your scope.
