It doesn't matter where you picked. Even though it didn't pick it up correctly, you would have had the same result. These things are pre-determined--so even though you 'pick', it's already picked.

It really doesn't matter what box you pick it's all based on a program module. Basically every selection actually has a red gem under it then what follows is just the rest of the routine. They design it that way so it shows you were close to a bigger wild or more free games etc. Think of it like the game on a random spin flashing a bunch of stuff lining up to only go off the screen last minute - Designed to get you excited and think a big payout is just around the corner.

My father did that and was paid for the value of the item he "picked". After that, they explained to him that technically the amount given is pre-determined. It doesn't matter which one you pick. You will be paid the amount that the machine pre-selected to pay you and the other "options" will be populated with other values. It could go the other way though because "malfunction voids payout".
