Wow, I colour my own hair but I only do streaks these days. You look like you could open a salon. Your hair color is so perfect and natural. I have a lot of red underlying pigmentation so it's sooo hard to lighten without ending up with more red or swinging to far the other way and getting blue or greenish...👍🏻 You did a great job
In my experience it has been Much better to not use 20 vol with demi permanent it will expose unecessary warmth red yellow gold tones ;no ammonia but opening up cuticle more than needed for a demi. Better to use 10 vol. For a base break.
hi I'm confused as why you used higher developer with a demi-permanent. Doesn't that make it permanent? Sorry Im still,l trying to learn. Also, my hair is a 5A but always always turns red when I try to bump it to a 7 or 8. Any tips. Thanks for this video!
HI Sheila, that is a great idea to go to the store to check your level. I love your shirt...distracted by shiny objects and your right about always ruining your shirt. Also, I love the Challenge accepted shirt too. Great tutorial. FW and stay safe.
It's perfect👌 luv it! I have a few questions. The reason you didn't get red tones was it because of the brand you used? I hope I can find a 10V at Sally's. Do you do your own highlights? If so can you plz do a video😉 You look beautiful! 🥰 Thank you for the video!
Hi Jen!! Yes the reason my roots didn’t turn brassy is because I used a violet based hair dye. It helps combat those colors while it lifts. And you’re in luck cause I have a Balyage tutorial you can watch!!
Wow this is exactly what I needed! I bumped w 6n and 20 vol for 40 mins. I’d say I got about 2/3rds of a shade lighter (just shy of a full shade). Wish I tried it with 30 vol! For reference I am a natural level 2.
I'm struggling bumping a level 4 dark brown to a 7 while lightening the natural dark brown and covering the random grey hairs 100% with the new color. When I use 7-0 with 20 vol the roots come out with a redish tone and the grey is not covered the way I want. When I use 7-1 with a blue ash cendre the tone is less red but the grey hair is not covered. Am I supposed to use 7-00 and then add in my own blue or green or both additives until I can cancel out that warm but get 100% grey coverage? I'm super frustrated because I can't find the right formula or brand that achieves this. Any tips would be appreciated.
I would always go with something that has a cool or neutral base. I’d say a 5NA would be good. The main base color is neutral and the secondary color is ash which usually kicks out red. You might need to use a higher volume developer or leave it on longer/use heat. It’s hard to say without me seeing a picture or knowing what you have used and the process. Hope this helps! And no the higher developer doesn’t turn it into a permanent. It just ups the possible damage to the hair as it’s opening the cuticle more 😊
I would go for maybe a 30 volume to try and lift a little higher. Mine lifts golden too if I don’t use the right toner with a neutral base and a low volume toner. Hope this helps! Xoxo Sheila
My stylist had to quit her job for medical reasons and didn’t charge me for base bumping- now I cannot find a stylist at the salon who knows what that is. She always did it on my wet hair after rinsing the highlights off- why are you doing on dry?
So If my natrual is a 4/5 and my highlights are 8 and 9 and few 10s. Can I use a 10V demi over ALL ?? OR DO I HAVE TO use a 4 to 6 at the roots then 9 to 10 for mids and ends.. HELP
Yes, you can, though it will only really show results on your highlights. It may have a TINY bit of effect on the roots, but worst case scenario, it won't change them or wreck them, as long as you use 10 vol developer (maximum).
I thought Demi permanent colors didn’t lift the hair? Wouldn’t this make your roots darker/change tone as it is just depositing color. I know a 10v as little to no pigment to make it darker but say I put 8 on my 6, wouldn’t that make it change tone, not lift? This technique seems more like a root smudge than base bump?
Question my base is a shade darker than yours about a 6. However, I have a lot if growth about 2 inches and since the rest of my hair is combined 9/10 it makes my ashy roots look darker! I need to dye my base before I do highlights & im terrified to go to a salon due to Covid due to a lung condition. Would I better off going w a high lift color in like a 12A using double developer or doing like an 8 9 or 10 with a 10 volume for about 10 minutes as others explain it to avoid warmth? Im REALLY CONFUSED as I keep watching different videos on this and every1 has a different technique! I just don't wana end up w. Either a red top due to warmth or a green greyish one due to too mush ash as I have in the past! Help! What would you recommend for a base technique? Any responses would be highly appreciated! 💝
Hi Mary! Yes everyone has a different technique that works for them. Please keep in mind your base tone will dictate how your hair turns out. I have a lot of beige but if I use anything other than a cool tone dye no matter what level it comes out very orange or yellow. Not lifting it too high is key as well. I would avoid any warm tones and stick with a neutral color like a 8NN or 9NN the extra N is for gray coverage but I feel like it has a bit more pigment to deposit. Do a small patch under neath and start with a demi or semi permanent to see if you like the outcome. I would say a 10 volume might be too low if you’re trying to bump. Maybe mix a 10 and 20 to get a 15?
I usually process any color for 20-30 minutes! If you leave it on less it might not lift all the way. Make sure it’s on virgin hair or you won’t get any lift from a previous color! Thank you for watching! Xoxo Sheila
Would this work on Asian hair that’s highlighted? I’d like to touch up my roots but worried what colour a Level 5 dye would turn out. Would it go brassy? Thank you 🙏🏽
It might lift brassy unfortunately 😟 it just depends on the undertone of your hair. Most of us are more red so we lift orange and yellow. If you use a neutral based level 5 like a 5NN it shouldn’t go to light and brassy. Do you know what level you are naturally??
Beauty by Sheila Lynn thanks for your reply 🙏🏽 I have black Asian hair... so I guess that’s a level 2 (?) I’ve decided I will just highlight/bleach my roots and use some kind of toner. The rest of my hair is highlighted and I would say is between levels 8-10.
Correct. I normally don’t use permanent color to base break because it blends better and there is less of a line of demarcation when it grows out xoxo 😘
If your using a 20 volume with a demi you will get around 1/2 to a 3/4 level lift; its just meant to make a slight transition so you can go a bit longer in between appointments. As its a demi that is also why she is recommending people to use a color 2 levels above their natural base since otherwise they come out too dark.
