How to Basket Stamp a Leather Belt Quickly

In this video, I show you how to basket stamp a leather belt quickly. This is the way that I basket stamp my belts and the fastest way that I have found to complete the stamping and have it come out accurately.

don, your video is very interesting, you may not have a professional camera crew, proper lighting, clean slab of marble, sensitive microphone or a very unique technique but i really like the way you explain WHY you do things, rather than how you do them, i just hit that subscribe button :)

Great video. I was wondering, would you recommend bevelling the border lines? Also, how would you typically finish something like this, would you do a two tone effect where you dye the border and then apply antique paste?

Another great tutorial. I noticed you backed your belt with poster board, but used the blue tape on other projects. Would you recommend using blue tape on belts? Especially liked your tutorial on the Cobra Class 4, I got one this past June, I fear it will ruin me for hand stitching.

I hate making belts. I do very few now. Folks give you their pants size instead of belt size, the use a smaller or bigger belt buckle.....any number of things, but they rarely fit. Names on the back are nearly always off center.... You would think something as simple as a strap to go around your middle would be easy, but I have messed up more belts than anything else I've ever made. I basket stamp at an angle exactly the way you showed with that ruler.

Hi Don, please confirm that the poster-board (no idea how thick that is or what it is called in South Africa) is used to prevent distortion and stretching? How do you paste it to the back, double sided tape, contact glue? Then out of the previous question, do you leave it there or remove it, as I don't normally line my belts?

Keeps the leather from stretching and distorting as you tool. As for how he glued and removes it idk. Alot just use painters tape, easy to remove and does the trick without waiting for glue to dry. But I'm sure the poster board holds much stronger

James, you can use regular leather glue to glue the poster board. Also you can leave the poster board glued to the leather.Makes for a stiffer belt. Just glue and stitch whatever belt lining you use right over the top of the poster board.

I've been basket weaving wrong. I've been trying to match the very tips of the grooves tip to tip. I was thinking that just needed more practice. Definitely going to stop doing that and space it out like you do. Beginner's issues.

I'm a newbie and I really suck at these boarder stamps! I have a cheap Tandys basket weave stamp x498. I always seem to have a tiny space between each one. I cant seem to keep them straight either. Is cuz I have a really cheap tool, or do I need to practice more?

Hello Don, enjoyed your video here on basket stamping. I think I am going to have Clay Miller make me a couple of basket stamp tools. what size are the two tools he made you? I am making bracelets that are 1 1/2 inch wide! I think my basket stamp tools are to large for that. Clay says he makes Xsmall, small, medium and large don't know what I need. Thanks! Jacque Duxbury

The poster board backing is cut a little narrower than the width of the strap. It’s to keep the leather from stretching during tooling/stamping. I use contact cement on it, and then just contact cement the belt liner to it and stitch it all up.

Once I bought a straight backed camouflage tool I pretty much stopped using my sunburst tools for belt borders. I ended up buying 5 types including a narrow pointed one, Craft Tool Pro #D2166. I use it in conjunction with a veiner to make a nice border.
