How to be a Chinese Tourist | 101 East

From setting fire to curtains inside an aeroplane cabin and hurling scalding noodles over a flight attendant to urinating in public places, Chinese tourists have gained a bad reputation.
One in 10 travellers world-wide is from China.
Outside of Asia, their destination of choice is France.
Despite complaints from locals, officials in Paris want to double the number of Chinese visitors to five million a year.
101 East asks what it will take to turn the plane loads of first-time travellers from China into well behaved sightseers.

Why would you travel to France just to eat Chinese food????!

Amazingly enough, you can see tourist from all around the world looking for international food. I met a (western) guy in Singapore who was doing a round the world trip who would evaluate the “best” countries depending on the availability and/or quality of international food (mexican, italian, etc).

I've studied in Montreal, Canada and I can say it's the exact same situation. Since the start of direct flights from Montreal to Beijing and Shanghai in 2015, Chinese tourists came there en masse. Even worse, rich Chinese investors, the same ones that jacked up home prices in Vancouver, Toronto, and other places, started doing the same to Montreal. The average home price that used to be $800k in 2014 is now $1.8 million in 2019. There has been such a sharp increase of homelessness and one of my favorite neighbourhoods there, where there was an equal number of English and French speakers, were almost entirely replaced by Mandarin speakers in a fortnight. Oh, and the city became much dirtier than before. It's not a good thing.

I thought Quebec has alot of restrictive language bylaws. Like how restaurants have to use French in their menus and waiters should always prioritize speaking French to customers. Is the government not enforcing that onto the Chinese over there?
@naturallyherb
@naturallyherb 4 года назад
@@elkinshiner5066 Technically, they are, but the government welcomed the Chinese investors because of how much money they could bring with lots of investment into local real estate. Unlike Vancouver, Montreal does not have a foreign buyer tax or an empty homes tax. Given the increased use of websites like Google Translate, Chinese business owners could just translate their signs into French while hiring local and more established Chinese inhabitants who could speak French to do things like customer service.

Those are all traits that need to be taught, but for a period of time in China (the Cultural Revolution years), they were abandoned. Thus, a whole generation of Chinese youngsters (who are now part of the older generation today) grew up without ever learning these qualities; instead, they've only retained their base "fight or flight" mentality.
@ZhangtheGreat

@Central Intelligence Agency There is absolutely a lot of correlation between the CCP and rude Chinese tourists. When an entire generation is denied proper schooling at an age when they should've been in school and told to wreak havoc in the name of supporting a dying chairman, it's going to cause them to feel far more entitled for their entire lives than the previous and next generations, and we see it in these tourists. The idea that "nothing will change" is ridiculous; we're already seeing that change for the better in the younger generation as they're better equipped to understand the world from a younger age.

@@tylerliu2632 Actually he is 100% right. Democracy allows for more open-minded people who don't view all opposition as "brainwashed", because everybody is legally allowed to have and express their own opinion. On the other hand, in a suppressive form of government, the flow of information is always going to be more controlled and censored than those with democracy, and even though both sides monitor and control information flow, communist governments will have to do it significantly more to prevent opposing points of view from forming. People of communism and other suppressive forms of government are often more vulnerable to propaganda and being misinformed, since their media, education and economy all come from one single source, meaning whatever they say is true will often automatically be viewed by the public as true. In terms of manners, third world countries that value democracy such as India, Malaysia and Brazil all prove to be much more civilized and open minded than China, because they are not constantly fed pro-country propaganda and are able to acknowledge their struggles instead of pretending they don't exist

Aj B Ones who travel independently have usually been educated abroad? That's not really true. The Chinese tourists who travel independently are often younger people who speak English, have higher education, are curious about foreign cultures and have taken the time to learn how to behave abroad. Some have likely been educated abroad, but many others were not. As a reference point I've been living in China for the past 13 years and many of my Chinese friends have traveled abroad. Few of them have a foreign education, but most of them did take the time to learn how to behave when outside their own country.

They don't have the same exposure as a westerner might have to France. They grow up seeing images of France and develop stereotypes of it being "romantic" etc because that's what they see. They might see many images of the Mona Lisa and understand that it's famous but not be aware of the history behind it and WHY it's famous, thus be disappointed by its small size. But by the same token, many westerners don't have much exposure to China and the East, and develop misinformed perceptions. I don't know many people that could recognise a famous Chinese painting let alone know anything about it. Chinese are stuck in their country's media bubble, as Americans are stuck in their media bubble, and many of us in the west aren't very educated about their culture and vice versa.

So often, I have seen the remark along the line, "If you want their money, then don't complain." Isn't this irresponsible remark getting worn out and lame? This is nothing more than an excuse and rationalization for poor actions, disrespect, and bad behaviors. When a tourist/customer uses a facility or engages in a transaction, he/she also has a responsibility to uphold. If you come into my restaurant and spit on my floor in front of me and my customers, I do have a justifiable reason to complain given the appropriate opportunity. How would one expect bad behaviors to change if people don't complain and are expect to swallow their frustrations. It's a transactions between two parties, where both have responsibilities to uphold. Lastly, if one is a guest in a country one chooses to visit, one should not to be disrespectful. When visiting another country, the foreign visitors will be judged, justifiable or not. So try to be a good "ambassador" of your country. All of the above are just plain common sense.

Yah seems like most Chinese people born outside of China like HK,Taiwan Singapore etc don't want to be associated with main landers. I have been to China and the people are fine its a over hyped stereotype. Yes main landers can speak louder the other Asians like Japanese but I view as a cultural thing no big deal

I remember being at the top of Mauna Kea in Hawaii to stargaze. Lots of Chinese tourists come to Hawaii. There were lots of cars parked at the visitor center, and a lot of the Chinese tourists kept flashing their headlights and opening their car doors (which made their cars light up) repeatedly, making us lose our night vision to see the stars. I was even trying to take pictures, and this one Chinese guy whose car I was near had his headlights on in my face as he was asking me about my pictures. It made me really frustrated but he seemed totally oblivious that he was doing anything wrong. I think culturally it has a lot to do with the big/dense population, people are used to being around a lot of other people. It was still frustrating though.

I'm Chinese born and raised in Hong Kong. My grandparents are originally from Mainland China. I think this video is so funny. The sisters from Shanghai are typical red army leftover from the cultural revolution era. Younger generation are mostly polite and well-mannered. We here in Hong Kong have the same problem with some ignorant and rude tourists from the mainland, but most Chinese tourists are pretty nice and are eager to be good tourists. The worst case scenario, we can always count on the Chinese gov't to stop issuing passport to those who misbehave. Give them another 10 years, and you will see the bad manner disappear. Chinese are fast learners. This is after all the first era when Mainland Chinese are given passports to see the world.

Before ever so slowly leaving, still taking pictures and staring at everything.

I work in NYC and Chinese tourists are the main clients for many companies now. However, they are the worst tourists you can imagine. Not all of them, but many are rude, loud, and dirty. They simply squat, spit and smoke anywhere they want. They simply do not care for what you think of them. Their biggest issue is that they think their money means they can do whatever they want. Like I said, not all, but there's numerous incidents of shameful behavior by the Chinese. I've never see tourists from EU, Japan, Korea, Brazil, Middle East, etc. act this way.

In Philippines, went to see tarsiers who are nocturnal so you have to be very quiet during the day when around them. Just 1-2 Chinese families with 2 kids screaming, tour guides telling them to be quiet -- nothing, they just looked around and kids kept screaming. From this I understand that most Mainland Chinese respect nothing, you have to punch them in the face to make them understand. No wonder China is so polluted with no wildlife left.

Yah...the educated know (and hope you do), that it's all due to communism and the cultural revolution. China has such a rich history and so many contributions to the world that started there. Until communism came along and destroyed Confucianism philosophy that made China's society so great. Case in point; Japan and Korea's societies are based in-part on Confucian principles hence why individuals value respect for the fellow citizens and the greater collective.

I've acted as a tour guide for my visiting Chinese in-laws. . It is kind of stressful. I was expected to have every minute planned and we were not to spend too long at any one place. Unlike these tourists. . nobody wanted to spend any money for admissions, restaurants or museums. They were more interested in "clear water" blue skies and natural things. . but didn't like the intense sun and mosquitoes that comes with natural places in Canada. There is to be no repetition either. . I ended up going alone to see Mont Morency Falls in Quebec City because "THey already saw Niagara Falls so it is not special".
