How to be a DOCTOR in Canada for International Students (IMG) and Doctors // Complete Guide

This is a guide for internationally trained medical students and/or physicians who want to come to Canada and work as a doctor ⚡️Whether you're a Canadian resident who studied at a Caribbean medical school or a doctor who's been working for years in India, the process of becoming a doctor in Canada can be confusing especially if you don't know where to look for information. While I'm only a 2nd year Canadian medical student myself, I'm hoping that this video will serve as an accurate, introductory guide to the process as of 2021 :D

This is actually a very informational video - IMG's are definitely at a disadvantage but nothing is impossible if you put your mind and effort towards the specialty! My eldest sister matched family at McMaster and she was an IMG as well

Thank you for the video. The part I am unclear about is whether the CARMS programme allows for *foreigners* (who are of course also IMG's) to apply. You've spoken about Canadian IMG's, but not foreign IMG's.

Hello Jatin. My situation is kinda arduous. If you could help me with it I'll be extremely grateful. I'm a 21 year old and am currently pursuing BSc Med medical. I was thinking of coming to Canada to do 1 year diploma in nutrition and then acquire my work permit. Further I'll apply for PR.( I had a PR when I was 14 but didn't move to the country becuz of my health issues, hence hopefully I'll get the PR in the same year in the meantime)(when my 1 year work permit is still valid) After PR I'll apply to med school as my PG. So my query is : a// Is this possible b// which examination ( Would I be stipulated to crack?

Thanks :D American students are technically viewed as "USMGs" when they are reported by the CaRMS match. So it is slightly different in that there are different match statistics for them vs. other IMGs. But, the process of applying would be the same as for IMGs including the necessary citizenship requirements as far as from what I've seen. There is a difference though for US physicians who have completed an allopathic residency looking to come to Canada to practice. If the residency length was the same length or longer compared to the equivalent Canadian specialty, then they usually do not need to repeat residency 🤙 or at least that's what I could find here: www.hippocraticadventures.com/canada/

Wanted to ask what if someone completes their residency in an other country and wants to move to Canada to practice, do they have to repeat the process of Canadian residency or will their experience in another country count and they will be exempted from all the tests

Hi Rana :) there are some exams that may* be looked at as equivalent to the MCCQE - however the list is smaller than you would think and unfortunately you are very likely to need to write our licensing exam before practicing medicine. As far as repeating residency goes, it is my understanding that this will depend on both the specialty and where you completed your original residency program. Best of luck with everything :)

The part that i dont get is that it says something like we have to work at least 12 months postgraduate to be eligible. So do i have to work as a practician for like 12 months to applicate for MCCEE?

Postgraduate just means after you get your medical degree :) So completing 1 year of residency training would be equivalent to working 12 months at a postgrad level. If you are truly interested in moving to Canada, your best bet would be to contact then directly and have everything cleared up good luck!

From what I've heard, now that Step 1 will be pass/fail (as of January 2022 I believe) different programs are looking into possibly using other test scores like the step 2 CK as the primary metric for competition. I think the consensus is that we're all still a little bit unsure with how this is going to work though 😅

Hi Ali, the more training you do in Canada, the easier it is to stay here. I don't know where you are doing medical school but if you are considering moving to Canada to practice I would advise looking into the residency match process if possible. Best of luck!

Yes that's true! While it's not a true "academic requirement" I have also seen that you need a permanent resident or citizenship status to apply for residency - keep in mind that residency in Canada is 2-7 years and you are quite literally moving here to work as a doctor (you get paid as well) :) For future reference to anyone, information on the Canadian PR can be found here: www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/new-immigrants/pr-card/understand-pr-status.html

Hi Sitharaka, I'm sorry, but I'm not to sure what you're asking? I do not believe that additional points will be given for IMGs in the immediate future if current trends hold. There seems to be a push for additional Canadian medical schools. If this is the case, then I do not believe that things would necessarily be easier for IMGs in the future.

Hi William, when I asked a former IMG about this, their response was "programs reserve the right to have empty spaces if they feel as though no qualified applicant applied." I'm unsure whether or not this is the case, but if it were then I suppose that in this cycle, the programs chose not to fill the spaces. For instance, If an IMG has graduated from their medical school, how can they accomplish one year of postgraduate training? because they're looking to get into postgraduation i.e., residency in the first place. Hi Karandeep, really wish I knew more about that, but my best guess would be that "12 months of postgraduate clinical medicine training," means that they'd like for you to have already started residency training before coming to canada in that case. You would be best off sending them an email directly for clarification :) Good luck

The US residency route to Canada is slightly different since the two countries share many similarities in our educational process. You would still need to go through physiciansapply.ca but depending on your stage of training, some barriers to entry probably will not exist.

Hey . I'm an indian. I just passed my 12th standard and i want to become a doctor in canada . But i think it's a very long procedure for international students to become doctor in canada . I can be an MD doctor in india in 8.5 years but in canada I'll have to do 4 year undergraduation then 4 year med school and then specialization to become an MD level doctor which would bascially be 5 more years if i wanna become a neurosurgeon . But i don't think it is worth it to spend these many years becoming a doctor in canada. Can anyone guide me a little about this ? I really need help . I'm confused

An intern year is usually referenced in the states as your first year in residency training. You would apply for CaRMS after graduating medical school - this grants you a Canadian residency if you have your PR or equivalent in addition.

General medicine doctors in Canada are usually either Internal medicine specialists or family doctors with hospital privileges. If you are certified in family medicine, then you will most likely need to be retrained to receive internal medicine specialization in Canada. Working as a hospitalist family medicine doctor may be possible, but I think that in your case, you are best off signing up with physiciansapply.ca and looking for an official answer from them :) Good luck!

The two ways are outlined in this video - either you specialize in your home country and try to come here afterwards or you graduate medical school and apply for residency here. Both are competitive, but check with physicians apply for the specialty specifics side of it 🤙

I've heard of students who tried to do this (reason being is because Saskatchewan really tries to recruit Saskatchewan residents to its medical school and not out of province applicants). In any case though, I've personally never seen it be done successfully. If you can find someone who's tried to do something similar, reaching out to them would be best. I'd recommend Facebook groups like the U Saskatchewan premed one (assuming they have one). Best of luck :D

Hi Yosr :) Glad the videos are helpful. In Canada, pulmonary medicine is a subspecialty after first completing a residency in Internal medicine. Medical students looking to become pulmonologists will apply to internal medicine for residency and then reapply to a separate match after completing their training. Hi there :) Residency and working as a physician in Canada will require a PR or Canadian citizenship. Some medical schools however do take international students but the list of schools that do is very small and spaces are limited. I would recommend checking with the schools that you are interested in studying at.

All resident doctors are paid in Canada. It's significantly less that attending salary, but you will still be paid according to your year of residency and which province you work in 🤙

Can I apply to premed even when I am over 30 yrs old? After premed I would be at least 34 to apply for med school in Canada. I mean are there older people who goes to med school in Canada?

There are no upper age restrictions on being accepted into medical school in Canada as far as I know :) The deciding factor for many students comes down to timing and what they are looking for in their career. Entering a 4 year premed degree at 30 means that you will graduate medical school at age 37-38 and will finish residency at age 40-44 depending on specialty. You will then usually need to work significant hours to pay off student loans in many cases upon completion of residency.

Hello doctor. We can obtain the license after clearing the mccqe exams irrespective of CARMS? And without getting into the residency, what options do we have as an IMG with 3+yrs work experience with LMCC? And is it wise to wait for the Canadian citizenship before applying for the CARMS?

Hi Ayesha, you need proof of permanent residency or Canadian citizenship to apply to CaRMS. In Canada, you need to have completed residency to practice medicine. There are nuances depending on where you completed your residency training, but recent graduates of medical school are not able to practice here without post-grad training

Canada does not have GPs as they are known elsewhere in the world. Here, being certified in anesthesiology does not qualify you to work in family medicine (the closest thing we have to GPs). To the best of my knowledge, you would still need to do some sort of residency training however, you will want to check directly with physiciansapply.ca and other foreign doctor recruiting agencies 🤙

Sorry Berlin, anything that can't be found on the official flowchart I provided is beyond what I can say since I haven't started residency yet. You're best off contacting physicians apply or a Canadian physicians recruitment office for details. They are now possibly considering cancelling MCCQE 2 depending on who you ask - so your best bet would be to check directly with an official source

That depends on the school. Many Canadian medical schools require Canadian PR status and then if schooling was done outside of Canada, there is a conversion process for international grades. You would need to check with each medical school's policy on how they view international applicants. This can be found on their respective websites. Good luck!

PR is mostly unrelated to your status as an IMG as far as I know. You would need to apply through the government website like other people wishing to immigrate to Canada

you've said postgraduate training in your home country, how? after MD or in my country MBBS, we do a whole house job which isn't count as a post graduate training but and we have 5 years of med school so, i'm doing internship in my 3 and 4 year of med-school 1 year before graduation so does my these 2 years of training will gonna count as training if this this option is mandatory for getting into residency in canada

Postgraduate training refers to the training period after medical school that is required for you to become a fully licensed physician in your country. This will differ from country to country :)
