I once played in a worship band with a studio pianist. He had played on Kelly Clarkson albums and a few jazz fusion albums. No one on stage knew who he was or what work he had done, he just sat there tacit for the entire first song. I asked what was wrong and he said, “piano doesn’t fit in that song, maybe the next one.” So we went onto the next song and he started sprinkling in some tasty licks, almost like he was gearing up for something. When it came time for him to carry a song he was on in full force, but it made complete sense for the song. He didn’t feel the need to prove anything, and it freed him up to use the piano to maximum effect.

Reminds me of the King Crimson story, where they were improvising Trio, and Bill Bruford stayed out the whole song because drums weren't needed. Robert Fripp gave him a co-writing credit for having the musical sense and lack of ego to not intrude. He extended the idea when performing live with his League of Crafty Musicians, where as I recall one guitarist would not play on purpose to visually reinforce the idea of the importance of silence.

I still remember--and try to live by--a comment Jeff Baxter made about his fellow Doobie Pat Simmons in a Guitar Player interview about fifty (!) years ago: he said Simmons's playing was always so perfect for the song that you wouldn't even be aware he was playing unless he dropped out. For other great examples of less is more, check out Bo Ramsey's playing accompanying Greg Brown.

I’ve been playing guitar for a long time. Probably over 30 years now, and playing simply and basic has always been a struggle for me. I just too bored playing it, but can definitely comes across as too busy sometimes. Of course I started with metal and that’s probably why. Over time, I learned my triads all over the neck. That happened on accident really, because I used to spend a lot of time just listening to other people’s tracked and improving solos on them. This is basically how I learned to play. But I always feel as if I need to be shining and doing something dramatic, which I know so far from reality. I’ve been working on getting better at this aspect.

We tend to get so used to just banging away, strumming like mad when we pick up an acoustic guitar. Restraint is hard, but necessary, especially in a band setting. Awesome video.

Develop Good phrasing and note choice is a lifetime journey (even for hard workers) and most people never will develop it unless if they put serious focus on it.. and will take a lifetime maturing. Improvisation alone is a giant subject... The less you play harder it becomes because there's less space for bad or random choices.

Weed won't help, not in the long term. It can open you a bit, but like other drugs it can delude you into thinking you're better than you are. The cognitive deterioration and demotivation that come with weed will slow your progress and the paranoia that comes with it will send your anxiety levels back up again.

At this point I’m turning on a beat and going reaaaaally slow . I try to keep my body moving in time and remember to breathe. Doing short sets of 30-60 seconds a couple times and moving on, thinking about where I’m tense. I’ve played a few things that sound musical and have had a couple musical ideas so I’m counting that as progress. Also am in a band which has forced me to actually figure songs out all the way and get over some shyness. The most important bit to playing in a group is to listen. Is the drummer keeping good time? If not, then that's my job: keep the groove, hold the drummer in place. If the bass player holding down the bottom? If so, I explore other parts of the spectrum, almost never playing a low note. Is there another instrument providing melodic fills between vocal lines? Yes, I'm off duty; no, I provide some ear candy -- and don't step on the singer!
