I know that my five years working in the games industry, being lead QA on one of the most popular FPS of its time and generally my complete and total fucking cynicism may not count for much, but I feel that there's a clip from Rab C Nesbitt that might be relevant here. The games industry is just behind the fucking KKK for being male and white. The amount of sexism, weird otaku shit and just mind blowing incel crap that is considered, "regular" would make a bunch of 12 year olds in the 80s playing Dungeons and Deliberate Female Oppression look like radical feminists. The reasons why games are shite is because the whole industry was taken over by venture capitalists who hired managers who worked on boxed white goods. Fuck Sarkesian. If you want to know why games are shit - consider that a game I know was delayed for two months because the executives saw rapelling in MW2 at E3 and insisted it was put into the game, despite literally having no place in it.
Ive always thought disobedient canines games were on par with the tightly coiled piles they leave on the lawn. The over hype the fans boys have is unfathomable
If feminists like Anita Sarkeesian really believed women were equal to men, they wouldn't hijack successful male-oriented movies and games, they would make their own. It's amazing how UNCREATIVE they really are.

I worked with Amy at Crystal Dynamics and I have never met, before or since, such a creative, intelligent, and dedicated individual, to say nothing of her incredible storytelling talent. What happened to her at ND was an inexcusable crime. I am a straight white male and make no apologies for it. The story and characters are uninteresting and nothing that I have not seen 100 times before. More than twenty months later, this video is still absolutely spot on. And for those who continue to accuse The Critical Drinker of misogyny or anti-woman biases, they're not really listening to his core message: uplifting female roles in media does not have to come at the expense of demolishing existing storylines, characters, narratives, and settings. Unfortunately, as TCD keeps pointing out, this is exactly what happens, and only because modern writers are too lazy and modern corporate producers too averse to risk.
That's one of the problems with TLOU2. It goes too far in this, awkwardly shoving representation in without fully adapting it to the setting. We end up with Lev's identity as a trans guy being so vital to his characterization that it basically means everything that happens to him (i.e. the death of his entire family) is a result of it, which didn't exactly hit well with everyone in the trans community. We end up with Dina accompanying Ellie not because she had ride-or-die bonds with Joel, Ellie, or Tommy before Joel's death, and not because she's a perfect party member for this kind of mission (in fact she's relatively sheltered for this kind of setting), but so she can be the Token Girlfriend. The annoying part is that who & what they are doesn't need to change in the slightest - all they needed was better motivation. Dina, because she's an inexperienced teenager going on a mass assassination mission (yeah, I know the plan is to rescue Tommy, but let's be real here), either needs something a LOT stronger than being Ellie's girlfriend for a couple days. Or she needs to be a lot more dumbstruck by the brutality of it all, a lot more fish out of water, allowing her fear and lack of skill/confidence to play against Ellie's determination. Lev just needed more of a reason for everything to have happened besides "because he's trans".
Fuck me there's maybe 5-10 minutes of what you could call 'virtue signalling' in a game with a runtime of 20+ hours.. if you fail to see the themes of empathy and the human condition due to such insignificant character traits as gender or race then the problem is with YOU, not the medium. Channels like TCD are contrarian by their very nature to attract clicks, yet a bunch of lonely individuals feel like it's a rallying cry to shit on next to anything and everything because 'mah masculinityz'
@@phattjohnson It's not really the "virtue signaling" itself that's the issue here. As you point out, it's not particularly overdone. Frankly, I think Ellie and Dina's relationship gets fairly close to the right amount of focus for this sort of story (if anything, it's kind of LACKING tbh), and while Lev's circumstances have always seemed a bit too strongly highlighted to me, that's not actually really a problem with him - besides the fact that he's a lot more of a secondary character than I'd expect to get that kind of spotlight, being the player's companion for only about two and a half segments in Abby's campaign. No, the real issue is the lack of proper buildup and focus dedicated to major story elements like Ellie's immunity, or major story moments like Joel getting shot. Lev being trans has more of a direct impact on Abby's campaign than Ellie's immunity does on hers. In fact, Ellie's immunity is heavily downplayed by Naughty Dog, given how incredibly contrived it is for there to have been only one person in the whole world who could have engineered a fungal vaccine, and the man wasn't even a fucking fungal or vaccine lab specialist, but a surgeon. That's like expecting a Formula One racer to be the only person in the world who can repair a fighter jet. Lev's circumstances as a trans dude are also... more central to his character arc than I'd expect? Obviously it's very important to him, but I mean, it's treated as the main catalyst for him and Yara to have fallen out with the rest of the Scars, when, say, a plotline about them AND their mother falling out with the rest because of the changes since the founder prophet died and how they believed in the "old ways" or something. A behind-the-scenes conflict like that is a really compelling, thought-provoking concept. Instead, it's mostly about Lev rejecting his designated role as a brood mare, making him less of a character who happens to be trans and more of a character to whom everything negative happens because he's trans. I'm cis, so I can't speak for trans folk, but I don't see why that was necessary, and I strongly believe the former would have been better. Keep the scenes where Abby just gets it, those were great, but he doesn't need to have to lose his mother and sister over it. Other than that, I think it's fine, it's just that his traits definitely got more attention than other, more central characters' did, and it's noticeable. The lack of focus and time on aspects that are specific to this series, and the higher-than-expected focus on something like the religious extremism of the Scars through the lens of how they treat Lev, definitely lends itself to the feeling of ND worrying more about virtue signaling than the coherency of the plot. I honestly don't think they intended to uplift such aspects at the cost of demolishing the others mentioned, it's just a bit of a byproduct of not really knowing how to fully make use of and fully flesh out those other aspects.

chitbong it’s not the characters we’re mad about, it’s how they are forcing them down our throats in a already established video game universe with characters we already care about and are attached to. i would have been fine playing as a gay ellie, but being forced to watch as a transgender woman who i barely know beat my favourite character to death with a golf club after he has survived years of the apocalypse and people attempting to kill him, that’s where i draw the line.
That is the reason why i'm against diversity in media, not because I don't want diversity, but because the media can't write characters with any subtlety anymore. Oh If they are gay that IS their personality. Remember when the most important thing about Luke Skywalker was the fact he is straight? me neither. A character who is interesting and also happens to be gay is one thing, but a character who is gay and only gay is about as interesting as a block of wood. a gay block of wood.

Ironically, Japanese media has the most good representation of strong female characters precisely BECAUSE they don't care about all that agenda-pushing crap. They just make women powerful because it's cool or it makes sense, or both. Just look at a similar-ish event in Hunter X Hunter: a character is depicted as being an absolute beast. He's one of the strongest people in the world and our protagonists follow him in hostile territory. But just as they get close to the ennemy base, an unbelievably powerful ennemy attacks them and that powerful man gets abolutely annihilated and right after that, at the end of the episode, you see her with the man's severed head on her lap and she down right says "Hmmm... I might be a bit too powerful, haha" I don't remember people bitching about that ennemy being female, because it made sense for her to be this powerful in universe. I also remember when some journalist asked Yoko Taro why 2B was a sexy french maid and he answered "I just really like girls". And in the game she is never overly sexualised, she's just a damn good character. People that stop at how she looks to dismiss the entire character (and the entire game for some) are the close-minded ones in my book. It doesn't matter what the character is, just how it appears to be... It's about artificial representation, not about doing justice to those female characters. I don't remember people getting mad at Horizon Zero Dawn for having a female protagonist. And for me is proof that gamers don't care about the gender of their heroes.
That's one of the reasons I don't mind spoilers. These days, I'd rather be forwarned and save myself the waste of money if it turns out to be another agenda driven piece of garbage.

Uncharted 4 was pretty disappointing because of how OP Nadine was. The story was decent, the characters were believable, and it still had the charm of the Uncharted series, mainly due to Nathan being the main character still. But whenever I go up against Nadine, you pretty much never get a good hit in because she’s too good of a fighter. I can’t remember getting a single solid hit in because she would either dodge or counter, making Nathan seem like an incompetent hipster fresh out of Starbucks. Nathan Drake, the person who found El Dorado, fought mutated cave goblins, survived being shot in the stomach and climbing a train hanging off a mountain, and immediately plowing through dozens on heavily armed militia, found the lost city of Shambala, followed by fighting a bunch of blue Hulks in loin clothes armed with almost insta kill crossbows and exploding sling ammo, followed by fighting a equally hulked out, highly trained war criminal in a burning tree house, AND THEN fought what’s basically the English Illuminati to find what’s essentially liquid fear gas from The Dark Knight. Oh, while he was also hopped up on said liquid fear gas. But no, he’s obviously no match for this lady whom we’ve never seen before and is completely ineffective compared to. And what twists the knife a little more is that she gets to go on her own big adventure as on of the main characters along with Chloe. And don’t get me wrong, the game was fairly decent, had a good story to follow along, and the history it went through was pretty interesting, but it fell short because Nate wasn’t in it. Nathan supplied a lot of the charm in the games, that was simply lost in The Lost Legacy. No one can replace Nate. Not even Chloe, and ESPECIALLY not Nadine.
I agree ; Uncharted 4 made Nathan a weaker character. as if being a regular person, married etc had changed him too much. the Drake bros were able to cut their way through swarms of mercenaries but couldn't beat their female boss in a fist fight?? i played the Lost Legacy and found it ok, but no more and certainly no replay value. i traded game after one playthrough . having Sam Drake as comedy value later in game didn't do anything for it. it was plainly meant to be a girl's adventure.. :P
She doesn't out power Nate, she's just faster and more skilled, landing a bunch of little shots that add up. Her singular shots don't mean much, she kicks him full force in the head and it only staggers him. She wins based on technique, speed, angles, leverage, holds and what not. He's an older slower brawler, she's a younger faster trained mercenary. In the Lost Legacy, when she's fighting a bigger, stronger, and equally trained soldier...her and Chloe together get their asses kicked (2 on 1).
