1960's Beauty consultant Marla Craig dishes out some well worn advice to #collegegirls on #howtobeattractive. They are as relevant today.
"There are many do's and don'ts," says Marla "on the way to becoming a complete, attractive person.The more interested you are in the world around you," advises Miss Craig "the more attractive you become"
"The inner beauty" she emphasizes "is the most important. The healthy mind, being interested in life and in the arts.Caring for others and being involved in your community. Being creative! An important part of beauty is a healthy mind. A healthy mind needs a healthy body, and a healthy body needs a good diet and exercise."
Marla goes on to show how to behave in your social life. "All the makeup in the world, doesn't make up for talking too much. Listening is often more appreciated than talking."
How many girls follow that rule these days?
Marla Craig's Vintage 1960's makeup tutorial can also be viewed on our channel.
This film can be purchased on DVD and higher quality versions of the film can be purchased for stock footage purposes. Contact footage@avgeeks.com for more information

What's wrong with swearing?
@nakomochi3117
@nakomochi3117 3 года назад
@@dianac.9648 swearing is wrong. They're offensive words and show no respect. Why do you think you get in trouble for swearing in class? Because it's inappropriate language. It’s not considered polite and is a sign of bad manners and disrespect of others to go around spewing obscenities. Doesn't matter if it's used to offend someone or used as a filler word. What comes out of our mouths is that which fills our hearts. Our speech will always indicate what is in our hearts. The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks.

@@nakomochi3117First of all, I don't trust schools to decide whats good or bad considering their usual response to kids telling them about bullying (nothing, accusing them of bieng overdramatic) , and their stupid opinions on dress code regulations for women ( not allowing us to go braless or no sleeves to avoid being sexualised as if SAing is our fault and not the violator's.) People cursed way more back then, it's just not as acceptable towards women because it's not considered feminine. Wanting us to be fragile things who won't talk back. It's as simple as this, Swearing is not wrong at all as the "rudeness" is only indicated by the tone. I can tell someone to "fuck off" or call friends and myself "whores" in a friendly matter. Really swears mean nothing at all, unless provided with context, like any other word. I could say "oh wow, you're so amazing" in the most hateful way possible, as much as I could say "Stop being a bitch" in a loving way. Slurs are bad but that's because of historical context and overall, usually specified towards a group of people (which they can say in a non hateful way because of reclaiming terms [ex:hey 👋, I'm a fag]) but that's a whole other thing.
@mellowcullens6091
@mellowcullens6091 3 года назад
@@dianac.9648 But just because some people did swear back then doesn't mean it was okay, and if lets say swearing is not wrong, then why is it forbidden in professional areas? Yes you can swear at someone or someone can swear at you, but we have universally accepted that these certain words are negative words and a sign of put-downs (from their original meaning). You can twist the meaning but it will still have its original rooted meaning there. Somes wear words also have bad historical context such as the term "bitch" which was a slur towards women, putting them down, and objectifying them to an equivalent of a dog.

bbytrinket From what I’ve heard men were simply a lot more predatory. It was after the sexual revolution but before concepts of sexual harassment had really set in so there was a lot more unwanted touching, hands on knees, and butt pats, in and out of the workplace. The ideas about ‘underage’ weren’t as firmly entrenched either which must have led to a lot of creepy encounters and comments. A lot of famous 70s groupies were 13/14 and no one blinked an eye. Look to Jimmy Seville to see how far this abuse could be taken. Not trying to destroy your fantasies- I have a lot of dreams about the past too and the 70s are so stylish. But I’m SO GLAD I live now, where my complaints are taken seriously and embarrassing a man isn’t seen as a worse crime than assault.

I do notice some changes from earlier eras like the 40s and 50s. The girl at 2:19 is sitting cross legged, whereas earlier a proper lady would cross her ankles (you'll notice that English royals still usually sit in that style). Also, the girl at 2:33, after she is done with her 'sloppy' walk, and moves on to the peppy walk which is also more modern. She is showing vivacity and spirit rather than restraint and poise, which i think is an interesting insight into the values of the time.

I think this a throwback to the time when people were more prejudiced against some of the more recent European immigrants, like Italians or Jews from Eastern Europe, who are culturally more expressive with their hands. I love the diversity in this video, but the norm, especially for upper middle class college kids, would be acting more traditionally WASP (white anglo saxon protestant) who tended to be more restrained in their gestures. (I know this because my parents were college students around the time this was released and have talked about that time.)
@indiciaobscure
@indiciaobscure 5 лет назад
@Tessie umm..I didn't say they were 'acting properly' but pointing out the norms of the time. There are people of all races in the video so I don't understand why you are talking about 'white people acting properly,' something that frankly sounds like a little too white supremacist for my taste.

The key to being attractive is being yourself and staying true to yourself. Not caring for what others think about the way you look or how you talk or where you’re from. Don’t care about what those people say or do. Be satisfied and comfortable with yourself. And, of course, take care of your health-mentally and emotionally and physically.

I tend to think that caring about one's looks is part of one's respect for the world and other people. If I walk around sloppy because "I like myself the way I am", that's disrespect for the world I'm part of. We need to make an effort and look our best.

One thing I’ve noticed is just how casual society has become. Dress for the occasion should still be common. I dress up for a holiday party at my in-laws and I get made fun of. Or even for family pictures one time I made sure my makeup and hair was done and I even had my nails painted, a dress. And was told I was over dressed. Ugh. In my mind, special gatherings and professional photos mean to dress nicely. I’ll never forget the instance with the photos, it was 5 years ago but still fresh in my mind. Now I dress up just going to the grocery store or running errands 😂

I am a teenager in todays society and I really do hope that I am not the only one who appreciates this way of thinking. More emphasis on the natural makeup and wearing things that you feel comfortable in and are meant for your body type. The good posture, and the being soft in your speaking. I started washing my face with just dove soap, moisturizer, and spf as my skincare routine because of these videos. Cuts down the cost of skincare a lot. Buying into the crap they sell these days in unnecessary. I feel much more happy and feminine now, and more confident in myself. Not to mention my terrible acne went away from simplifying the routine. Another thing to mention about the natural makeup, is how lightly its applied and how it should suit your face. Many girls I know, contour their noses to the extreme and wear extremely clumpy mascara, and while I don't mind it, its not my face they can do what they want, i just admire a natural look that accentuates ones own beauty instead of trying to change your features. Thanks for these videos, they have helped me greatly.

I'm always so pleasantly surprised with videos like these. It's just that usually when I think about 1960's I don't think of them as being progressive or liberating especially for women, but these kinds of videos prove me wrong and I am so happy for it. I love the emphasis not just on your physical looks but rather your mind and how you carry yourself, as I think that's far more important than just looks. I honestly expected her to speak only about whats appealing to men or how to make yourself useful so that you could please a man as a housewife. Hell, this video seems more progressive and liberating than even some stuff you would see in 2019. Maybe the past wasn't so awful as we are led to believe. I wonder when this all started.

Young people have an extremely skewed view of the subtleties of what life was like back then. I just love listening to their version of "how things were" - it's like listening to people talk about a party they weren't invited to. Housewives of the era were NOT solely focused on "pleasing a man" - they wanted to please themselves just as much. They were people, not robots.

That is ignorance, the 60's were the era of women's liberation and great social changes. Women began to protest the traditionally compulsory marriage, calling for divorce laws and demanding their rights. In the 60s, the birth control pill was approved for the first time, women began to wear miniskirts and bikinis, among many other things.

It's funny to see how young people of our time with brainwashed feminism think that everyone used to be oppressed, stood in the kitchen all day and thought 24/7 about how to please a man. Women of that time didn't even shave their pubes to please someone there. Today, more than ever, people are concerned about their appearance and body shapes, cosmetology services, fillers, botox and plastic surgery are proof of this. In addition, every influencer, popular tick tok blogger and celebrities sell and promote cosmetics, this happens literally at every step. Beauty brands and beauty products are thriving. Despite the opinion that today we live in a freer society, I am sure that this is an illusion. Yes, we have succeeded in some things, but otherwise there are still too many requirements, including for appearance, for external gloss and success.

Covering up unhealthy skin with makeup instead of addressing the cause directly coincides with the media becoming a stronger influence. The one thing most people can do to improve their skin is to drink enough water. The amount per day is less important because it varies from person to person. If a person carries a water bottle with them & sips on it throughout the day, they will stay hydrated. Dinking coffee, soda, energy drinks will dehydrate as caffeine is a diuretic.

Because we have so many choices in fashion and styling we start losing who we really are and instead end up being a stereotype. Yes, you are all being packed into a label, that’s literally how companies see you. So now, instead of the reality and truth like these videos, you get emails and magazines so that you TOO can look like someone else, and follow someone else’s diet and style. The outfits, the makeup and the hairstyles still look very trendy and attractive to me... Also, as they said at the end of this, it's mainly about common sense and things that we already know (a balanced diet, being clean and fresh, acting feminine and elegant) but that are actually the most important actions for a healthy body and mind. I'm a 22 years old european student but I am totally in love with these old videos which are related to beauty and fashion during the 50s and the 60s.
