Michael Cockerell 's series of how-to guides explaining the intricacies of top government jobs continues with a one-off programme revealing the tricks of a foreign secretary's trade. Present incumbent Robin Cook and six former occupants of the position talk candidly about the challenges of the job while Cockerell demonstrates how the demands and scope of the office have changed over the years. Transmitted on 4 January 1998.
Interviewees: David Owen (Foreign Secretary 1977-79), James Callaghan (1974-76), Lord Carrington (1979-82), Douglas Hurd (1989-95), Geoffrey Howe (1983-89) and Malcolm Rifkind (1995-97) as well as Robin Cook and Lord Renwick (former Foreign Office civil servant).

One of my favourite moments in Michael Cockerell's exquisite documentaries is when one statement is immediately contradicted by another, beautifully belying the double-speak employed by the political class. 4:56 is a fine example.

@cBearTV-
@cBearTV- 4 года назад
Ah yes well spotted, I hadn't realised that but now you say it I remember the clips in the offices of state trio. I was sure I hadn't seen this before but started watching and was sure I'd seen some clips, and that explains it. Well spotted 👍 I've noticed on many of these types of documentaries they often reuse clips from other documentaries it happens a lot in documentaries about Thatcher or the labour party of the 70s & 80s when those topics are covered.

@Uio3eva
@Uio3eva 3 года назад
@@tyqwdybijo Thing is you can’t give a single example suggesting the BBC are left wing. I can give you numerous examples, modern and historical about how the BBC are sympathetic towards the government of the day, and many instances in recent years where they have shown bias towards the government in their conduct and programming. For instance for the past 5 or so years there has been a statistical dominance of right wing commentators and guests on BBC programmes; and a large proportion of senior BBC staff have previously worked for or have gone on to work for the Conservative Party. The government also appoint their donors onto the boards and as Director General. I can go into these things a lot more if you need as I studied BBC history as part of my history degree, but it’s after midnight atm so I’m gonna leave it here for now.

To a BAME person “one of the main reasons we dont have anyone who isnt white and from Winchester is because the BAME people just don’t apply!” ............ is this first order, basal reasoning what we get for the FCO nowadays? Hopefully this stayed in the 90s.
