What about adjusting for declination? Definitely skills that everyone into preparedness should learn.....good video

We absolutely account for the GM angle. Either dial declination or remember LARS. We can only show so much in a short video.

maps do not usually have a magnetic grid. you have to account for the angle of declination to account for magnetic vs true north.

Ok, but in order to do this, I need to be able to know what those squiggly lines on the map mean. I obviously need to go back & learn a few steps first
@CrackedCandy
@CrackedCandy 2 месяца назад
Think of it this way. Those lines are elevation. For example every twenty feet you get a line, then you go up another, you get another line, then at 100, you get a thick line. Think of it this way. You have a lake and you draw a line around the edge of the lake. Then you empty the lake with enough water to lower the surface of the water 20 feet and you draw another line. Now do that again. Another line, etc. Where the lines are close together, that's a cliff. Where they are far apart, that's a flat place, like a plain. If there are a bunch pointing like a "V", that's a draw/canyon. If that V has a blue line in it, that's a river/water source.

Go to Google look up your address change the settings from Street and roads to topographical this is how you can find your elevation. One thing you have to know with Google it will only show you limited viewing can't zoom all the way in and out under that view. You can get some really good screenshots and print them out on large paper and make your own maps.

@@MrMcGuy the movie that forced the changed from just G, PG & R was Indiana Jones & The Temple of Doom. It was given a PG, but decidedly needed something more, so after complaints, the PG-13 was established. Helps to be old sometimes. Only, it just feels like 15yrs ago maybe.

can i ask where you printed that map? i printed some from USGS or some other topo site but it didnt seem like it was to scale or atleast didnt indicate which scale it was, also rifled through the ones at barnes and noble when i saw em and they didnt seem like good land nav maps, just lookin for some new places to source them. thanks
@kaboom4679
@kaboom4679 2 месяца назад
There are a number of free and paid sources for topo maps . Most any you get from the USGS will have an accompanying legend and scale , along with lat and longitude hashes on the margins , if not alsoarked as solid line grids on the map as the military / dod ones will have . They will also have a reference datum and , magnetic North deviation for the date which the map was drafted and any year of revision . Other privately prepared maps may or may not have all this in their data sets . You can download these maps to a file , which is advisable , since if you are bugging out , the internet has gone by by or will shortly . If you are worried about signal discipline and being potentially tracked , load the map files on a tablet that doesn't have a cell transmitter and keep the wifi and Bluetooth turned off or disabled . If you have a bugout bunker , bat cave , whatever , keep a few extra drives / sd cards / whatever with map files loaded on them . A printer that works with a computer and which neither require an Internet connection to work , would also be a good idea to stash away . Obviously you don't want to be trying to hump your whole office through the wilds of assrape Arkansas whike trying to dodge the commie hordes , foreign or domestic .

Another great map to have are the FAA sectional maps that pilots use. It shows everything and each one covers a fairly large area. It’s not going to show contours but it’s a wealth of info as far as towers, airstrips, mountain tops, railroads, military bases, and main highways. Check them out. FAA sectional maps.

Ok both of the Red Dawns are equaly ridiculouse and awesome. The 80s version was far less cringe for sure, but the new one was great too. I used to hate the new one until I gave it a couple more watches and now I sort of prefer it. I do think the og did a better job making the story feel like it carried out over a long period of time. The newer one had the kids learning how to be sf geurillas within a couple of days.
