How to be TIDY - one SIMPLE secret!

What does it mean to be tidy? Are some people just naturally born to be tidy? What can someone do if they struggle with keeping their spaces (and lives) tidy? All these questions ANSWERED in today's video!
As a cricket (clutter bug organizing profile) I am a bit of a perfectionist. I love organizing and keeping things in order. I crave visual simplicity and clear space.
This was an easy standard to meet for most of my life... as a child, college student, and even a young married wife. That all changed once kids entered into the picture! Suddenly I was finding myself as quite the opposite of tidy - AND majorly stressed out!
Now, of course, raising a young family is taxing and emotionally draining in its own right. What I didn't find out until years later is that it wasn't the main reason of my inability to 'keep it together'. My stuff was.
Once it clicked that we had accumulated more than we were able to maintain and manage, my husband and I had a major life switch. We started intentionally going through each of our belongings and making some tough decisions about what to keep and what to let go of.
Now, almost six years later, we have added two more children to our home - but our ability to stay tidy is TENFOLD!
I hope this video can be encouraging to you, especially if you are someone who feels that you were born with out the 'clean gene' and being tidy doesn't come naturally to you.
It is truly my belief that anyone can find success with tidiness by making this one simple difference in their life!
xo
Angela

Hi Angela, I am going back to your older videos I haven't seen yet. I enjoy your style - always brief and to the point, and the tone of your voice and overall vibe is calming and gently encouraging🙂. Thank you! (That helps when my frustration level reaches the point when I don't want to make any more decisions, lol.) Thank you for everything you are doing. I wish you and your family well, and looking forward to the new videos!

My problem is putting things back to their proper place. Also, things like food get pushed back in fridge, I forget about them. Same with pantry items. So I take time to check out the back of the pantry periodically and check dates. Pull out things and put in front to use before expiration date. I use bins, one for beans, one for grains, one for sugars etc. Small containers like plastic dish pans are great for fridge and freezer. Frozen veggies in one, frozen fruits in another etc. Dollar tree bins work wonders.

Dear Angela, thank you for this encouraging video. I was wondering when I got to the point of becoming a 'tidy person' since I used to be a untidy person for as long as I can think of. I guess it all started, when I began to make the bed in the mornings. That's been like around 4 years ago. And all of a sudden I found myself on the way to minimalism. It is amazing, how one simple and small habit can change a whole life before you even realize it. 😊

I’m a cricket and continue to lean towards minimalism. I’m an artist in a small one bedroom 390 sq’ apt. My art studio consumes most of my living space. I tend to be very tidy in the big picture. My struggles are in my art studio….. You touched on ALL the areas that are apparent in my system. (Ex. I know some general areas, but I truly don’t know where everything is.) And conjecturing there’s too much inventory. I know it’s so for me. My problem is-my mixed media/found objects art goes in so many directions, because I have a high imagination IQ. ☺️ I don’t know how to narrow things down, in spite of the fact I need a lot of supplies to create the art I do. I follow a lot of creators. I discovered your channel, and am glad I did. Your approach, calm articulate voice, and getting to the core issues (especially when you mentioned ALL I’m doing) is very refreshing. Thank you. I rarely write a missal. 😁 My heart and mind are full and I’ve hit a wall. Late evening at this writing probably isn’t helping, either. 🤣
@ArrowHillCottage
@ArrowHillCottage 2 года назад
I’ll be honest that, as a creative person myself, it took me the longest to let go of art supplies. I think in some ways that category was more tough than the sentimental group to declutter- because I tend to be the type of person who is sways looking forward to new creations and memories. When I decluttered my art and craft stash, I got rid of things that I hadn’t used for a while - even if I had an idea of what I ‘could’ use the media for. (I had over 100 small wooden blocks that I held onto for years but never did anything with!) That being said - your journey is your own! If you don’t feel ready to part with those supplies quite yet, or you find joy in having a stash to use for your projects…there is no rule saying that you can’t keep them! Best of luck to you! I hope you will check back in and let me know how things are going! ❤️

Yes. I am a cricket. Lol. Sometimes I am Mr Monk also (except not about germs, just order and this weird thing I have with stray water drops). 😅😅 I think I can relate to the mom job lately Bcuz at one point I had 9 cats, one special needs cat, stray cats, sometimes people would anonymously leave me kittens and then the raccoons. Then this enormous house with grating little construction problems, (like a perfectionist’s nightmare), half of it filled with renters). I was really overwhelmed and I had to find a way so ergo…minimalism. When you’re a cricket and if you can’t cricket right it just becomes more like piles and piles and sooo much procrastination. So glad it’s not like that anymore. I still have more on my plate than I would prefer, (down to just 6 cats lol), but just decluttering and using a lot of minimalist advice, it is so much more manageable now. Plus it used to get to me a whole lot Bcuz it’s just so difficult to be this tidy life person and then just fall from Grace so far down like that. But well it was a lot of things tho Bcuz I also had to stop making my self worth be all about my “abilities” or accomplishments. Finally tho I just came to the conclusion that my perfectionism was going to die hard and be so difficult to not engage in that way less stuff just made a lot more sense. That way I could still enjoy a bit of doing some things to the nines without it burying me or making my head explode. Like I would just rather have less that I can do up to the nines rather than a lot that I can only half arse tend to. It would often bother me a whole lot that I had all this or that laying around and that I could not do it “right.” So until I can find some better way to chill about such things, I just made it be a lot less so I could hit my mark more often than not. And this def made me feel better about myself…Bcuz ya know. Great self confidence (independent of achievements) might take a little longer than I have to stay sane in the mean time. Lol. Hopefully that makes sense. Like the goal is loving myself no matter how good or bad I do, but still “doing well” helps me kind of at least start feeling better about myself right now. But then again also there is some part of me that just loves ripping through chaos and mess and turning it into good order. I just really enjoy doing it and I consider it a “fun activity.” Lol. Although I think it’s more fun when it’s not MY stuff all piled up like that. Lol.
@ArrowHillCottage
@ArrowHillCottage Год назад
It’s ok if it takes a little longer, as long as you are making progress! I can relate to your sentiment about maybe doing less at a time, but doing it really really well. That was the philosophy I had when designing this house actually. We could have more square footage…with cheaper finishes…or build a smaller home with higher quality finishes and better construction. We went with option 2 ❤️
@goodenoughgirl8102
@goodenoughgirl8102 Год назад
@@ArrowHillCottage For sure! I want to see a “tight” product or setup. That’s exactly how I feel about the home I want to live in. Well constructed with durability. High quality. I’d go as small as I practically would be allowed. Lol. I mean it’s a long story but this dinosaur jalopy house (as I sometimes call it) was my “inheritance” so…I got over the shame and guilt etc Bcuz the giver is still toxic. Like ya know. I wanted beautiful Rachel and old cheap shyster Laban gave me Leah. 😅😅 (The fam business I used to work in…I now call it “slumlording” lol). But it’s most def not “me” and I mean I could make a huge list here of what all isn’t quality or right about it, but nobody has the time lol. But one super aggravating thing for me now is problems with cheap flooring messing up and enormous baseboard gaps. I mean who does that tho? It would be hard for me to find ANYONE else whose baseboards don’t actually meet with their floors. 🤯🤯 But you know. You can’t tell him he’s wrong Bcuz he’s always “right.” 🙄 Lol. (I had to DIY some parts myself Bcuz of where my cats go potty. What a nightmare it was lol). But at least I can say that I have by now made it quite a little haven despite it not being what I would’ve hoped for. I think it’s better to go after exactly what you prefer but at least I have learned how to get really innovative and make things at least a lot more like I would prefer them to be. (Without having to break the bank etc). Lol. But I mean the main thing here for me is that I make sure I’m living my life by my own and God’s design and not just live out the “insane dictator’s” wishes for my life. Power to the people. Freak yeah. lol. And if God gave Jacob a profitable, shyster proof exit plan from Laban land, then I figure He’d do the same for me also. Lol. (Aka “spotted cow plan” Lolol).

Hi, again. Your video popped up in my feed, so I rewatched. I’m in a new phase where I cannot live with my present organizing/purging/aesthetic system any longer for my entire apartment. I’m finding I desire to conscientiously remove FAR more than ever before. I’m ready for this newest challenge. I need MORE simplicity! This is especially true for my art studio that I previously mentioned. It’s here I’m needing to narrow my focus. I’ve had way too many ideas. It’s time to reign in my imagination. 🙃

Not sure if anyone has this same problem, but I have many many books that are relevant (some indirectly) to my line of work or I think are great references for other things. Given the cost to replace some of them, it doesn’t seem like a good idea to downsize my book collection. But…I have so many books that my office book shelf always seems cluttered with things that aren’t being used now. Non fiction, useful books are so hard for me to get rid of, even if they’re not useful to me right now. I’d love to know what other people do about this. I never hear anyone talk about this.
@ArrowHillCottage
@ArrowHillCottage 2 года назад
I hear you on the books! I also have books that I love to reference - but don’t use all the time. I’m wondering if ALL the information in your reference books is useful, or if you tend to come back to a chapter or two…or even just a few pages? I have, on occasion, actually cut out pages of reference books. Then I place those pages into clear plastic sleeves in binders. This cuts down on the amount of shelf space needed and also makes it easier for me to find the information I need when it comes time to do that referencing.

I discovered decades ago that, given my limited amount of energy, I can keep a household clean and tidy if it only consists of two beings: myself and one other, whether human or animal. Right now, I'm looking after 6: myself, my hoarder husband, and 4 rescue cats. You can guess how that works out. Add to that, I'm 35 years older than I was when I came to the realization, 68 years old. My energy level is about half what it was then, plus my sacroiliac in my hips gives me fits. That sounds funny (sacroiliac) but it really, really is not. I am making progress paring down the household inventory, but it seems like a long slog.
