@@Renshai32 from what little I've gathered, psychopathy describes the situation in which the person lacks gray matter in areas of the brain responsible for feelings such as self-consciousness, which can lead to things as simple as disregard for social norms and maybe at worst, disregard for other people's rights. I'm definitely not very learned in this and less so when I first commented, but I would guess that a lack of some feelings of awkwardness, if that is a suitable comparison to self-consciousness, might make someone better at lying in the sense of how polygraphs "detect" it

My things is controlling your emotions, staying calm in stressful situations, leaning on rationality, and having extreme self control is what the men who succeed at meeting societies crazy expectations can do. So many men are successful in ways of meeting this standard that many women truly believe we don't have feelings like them. So I belive plenty of these men could very well pass a polygraph just off their developed skills. Forged in the fire of life so to speak. I truly wonder how many of us would excel at the training people in government agencies receive for beating a polygraph just off what we had to develop on our own. Just a thought.
So, a lie detector responses to heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, and sweating? And if anyone of these jump, your lying? All of these can spike because of sexual arousal.
The modern polygraph has 17 factors, among them your brain. the methodology has also changed quite a lot and there are 3 types, the mixed being the +99% accurate and yet to fail and then the American one which is faulty.
Well no they mean that since the polygraph test can be tackled by just being chill it shouldn't be used in testing whether or not someone did a crime. Even an innocent person can get incriminated and a guilty one might go free.

During a job fair my school had a while back one of the stands had one of these machines that they were letting the students use. All of my friends (and myself) were skeptical of how well these things really worked. I ended up going over with them and testing it out. I was able to convince the thing I was lying when I wasn't and I was telling the truth when the lie was so obvious it was almost funny. They asked my age and I said 24 when I was really only 16. The detector said I was being truthful. Needless to say I had a few of the people working the stand flustered afterward.
I know, right? I used it to, have an app I could laugh at when it detected wrong, also this video is all true. I did used to think that you just couldn't lie, but then I actually had to use one at school after someone stupid committed a crime at school and I was tested with one. It said I was lying, when I was telling the truth, then I looked at it and it turned out this particular device, which printed nothing (on paper) for a lie, and a message saying true if they weren't lying, and it was a bit ridiculous and they actually thought it worked for real, not just to trick people, turned out it was trying to print true based off the results, but was out of ink.
there's a big difference between saying you're 24 when you're really 16 and saying you didn't kill, for example, your wife and her lover, while coming up with a credible alibi for it without feeling stressful. The lie detector machine isnt accurate for people with extreme control over themselves. But for the common person, while asking complicated questions, it works perfectly.

I remember watching an episode forgot the name of it but they used a lie detector test and it said that the father did kill the baby, If it was wrong than I feel so bad for that man, being blamed for something a machine said he did, that has to be the worst feeling in the world, people saying that you killed a baby and that the machine proved you did when in reality you didnt.
Here in the UK we used to have a show called the Jeremy Kyle show which was cancelled after someone who appeared on the show ended up committing suicide because of the results of the show

It's a fun show, but they dont get everything correct. And you shouldnt expect them to either (hell, they even say this themselves). The point of the show is that you SHOULD NOT accept things blindly. That you should look beyond what people tell you, through your parents, your school, your peers, etc.. In short, they want people to be more skeptical. Not trade one source of 'infallibility' with another :-P

+FullMetalPower7 I had a surgery to get that fixed literally four days ago, if your's is as bad as mine was (Having difficulties writing, such as pencil slipping, and paper ripping, or being un able to hold onto things) you might want to consider having a surgery for it, I got insurance to cover mine, but thats mostly because I had an extreme case.
I would get super nervous and my heart would go crazy if I was sitting in a room accused of murder. When I was like 10 and I heard about it I didn't get how that told if they were lying. (I didnt wanna say anything cause, ya know, a human being created it, but I guess he saw it too)
because america is a young country without a long rooted history. It makes them more afraid of changing incase their "lose" their identity. It's why they stubbornly stick to old laws and such rather than reform and modernise like the rest of the world.
Adam mentions this in passing, but another big issue is that the truth is not always dichotomous. A person can honestly deny guilt yet be legally culpable for a crime whereas a decent person may feel guilt where no crime has occurred.
I remember watching the Maury show and seeing this guy with so much guilt on his face after a polygraph test showed he didn't lie. The wife kissed his feet and he literally didn't move a muscle and his face looked like someone who had just gotten away with murder and couldn't handle the guilt.

That's what I always thought, like when people think, "Beat a lie detector test" they think to say a lie and get away with it. When I think that, all it means is the test got it wrong. If you see videos of youtubers doing lie detector tests often what will happen at least once is that they come out with a big question and then the detector comes with it out as a lie and then the person saying it really wasn't a lie though.

A dodgy device that judges whether youre lying or not based on a few things that could be happening just because youre generally nervous is really not accurate at all. Not to mention the person that interprets the reading which can also be biased one way or another.. see things that are not there ect. Plus that confession thing she mentioned.

+Dickson Butts Yeah, but the control tests at the beggining have n affect on your lfie whether or not it detects a "lie". However, once the questions actually would it would make it much more likely that your heart rate and nerves would spike. Also there was a study i heard about (cba to source) which found when a group of polygraph testers were asked to find out who stole a pen, and that they were sure it was a specific suspect (when no one ha done it) something like 90% of them said the polygraph proved him guilty.
They do take control questions to establish a baseline heartbeat, b.p. and what not. Which this background is removed so that any real change is measured. After all, the majority of people who lie do experience an increase in b.p. which is then referenced against the background to determine anomalies. They nature of the test isn't very analytical, but it is a good indicator for furthering the credibility of ones hypothesis. (If your a chemist, it would be like taking an IR spectra of your sample and saying, yep that looks like that's what I think it is.)
Can testify about it being easy to fool a lie detector. Was hooked up to one while going a Forensic Psychology course in University along with another guy after being asked to take something out of the instructors bag, which he did not. The class, and even the instructor, said the other guy had more 'signs of lying' on the test than I did.

@Genesis Galilee The polygraph test has never been proven to reliably detect the difference between true statements and false statements. The outcome of the test is extremely subjective and depends on the actions of the examiner who is conducting the test. in fact, it has been found that polygraph tests have a 50% chance of having an accurate outcome. That is exactly the same as flipping a coin to make the decision about true or false.
It is fecking ridiculous. The daughter of a friend of mine wanted a government job and they wanted to hire her, but that meant passing a polygraph test. Problem is she's just a naturally nervous person, and she kept failing and failing, to the point where the "detector" said she was lying about her own name and that she'd developed a hard drug problem between tests. But it was required, so they kept flying her to DC to take it again until things timed out and they gave the job to someone else.

If you put a rock in your shoe before a test and press down on it during the baseline setting, there's basically no way for the polygraph to get a "lie" response unless you're really bugging tf out
@@thisusernameisnotlong8934 When they give you the baseline test, they measure your resting heart rate. If you cause yourself pain(by pressing down hard on the rock) during this process, it elevates your heart rate, so when you do the test, your heart rate never raises above the baseline.
Coming to this video after taking a polygraph yesterday for a law enforcement job. I was very nervous the whole time even though I disclosed multiple things of my past before beginning the exam. The results “Displayed clear signs of physical bodily disagreement against response when asked about concealing involvement with criminal activity.”
We've got whole Star Trek episodes about artificial intelligence dealing with logical paradoxes. A sophisticated machine would probably shut down, this fancy EKG meter (read polygraph) wouldn't notice a thing.
Simply think of the worst imaginable thing while being ask baseline/standard questions. For instance, if the administrator ask, "Is the light on in this room?" You'd respond yes while envisioning something horrible. This alters the deviation from the baseline response and a lie because your heartrate and other measures were elevated while setting parameters.
