I agree. I imagine the big mama was taken years ago and abused and tortured for years on end. The motherly aspect of it feels like she had a child at some point during the abuse that was subsequently also taken from her. Like a completely mentally broken person, perhaps she even grew up her whole life underground in those conditions. It’s way more screwed up and sad than it seems.

The monster mom is actually the result of decades of incest and rape caused by that man who killed himself, which is probably why the monster feared him. Also, remember what the homeless guy said, " she's not the worst monster down there. " or something like that. I feel like he was trying to point out the idea that the serial rapist was the root of all this evil. Some clues like the gritty looking old man's flashback and the VHS tapes that AJ found in the room also point out that this man was a serial rapist. So to clear things up, the real monster was the dirtbag who caused it all lmao. This movie was a great watch.

Skarsgård is such a good actor, the whole beginning of the movie I was waiting for him to be the killer but also at times he sounded so genuinely confused like when she was stuck in the basement, but the scene where he sat at the table with the wine waiting for her to turn the corner was gold.

Up to the very end when the monster appeared he was built up like the killer. No matter how many times you rewatch it, thats how the movie was written. The scene with the police officers was frustrating. Her being dirty and disheveled doesn't equate to crackhead or mental illness. And cops working in that area should know that, based on experience. I've worked with people from both of those populations. She was clearly upset and scared and not high or anything of the sort. Very coherent! They were acting like they don't live in a world where people, especially women, are snatched up and held hostage or worse.
@codynoth4183

No they live in a world where people make false claims 24/7 and end up wasting precious resources. The fact the officers even went there to check it out is leagues more unbelievable at this point, especially in a city like detroit. I love me some mystery, but the good guy always gets into it and ends up coming out either the only survivor after never betraying anyone and always protecting with the "No, let me!" type of lines. Or they end up doing what the protagonist does in Barbarian with the "We gotta save everyone" mentality. Even when the stories go so great the entire time and you think the ending is gonna blow you out of the water, they smack you with the cliche "Bestie is the killer" or "Oops, good guy was the bad guy". Making a movie/storyline where the good one/the smart one actually gets selfish and lives to see the aftermath they COULD have gone through would be rather satisfying. I was really disappointed after seeing that movie. I saw a lot of people saying how it's movie of the year etc...and...yeah no. Story was really average, people's actions didn't make any sense and 99% of the scenes could have been avoided if the main character just did what any normal woman would have done in her situation - not sharing a home with a complete stranger who was also acting weird sometimes. She wasn't even stranded there. Could have gone literally anywhere else. Also her landing on mama after the fall...really...

Like she's been missing 2 weeks, surely someone who knew of her stay would've noticed and reported her missing, thus a police call to the house and seeing all her stuff (car, her items, dirty dishes never touched), still there, they would see the basement window had been broken; leading them to investigate basement and see the mystery room. Then, when it suddenly cut to Justin Long's character on the highway, think that is where it ran out of gas and just could not get back the intrigue from the beginning. It was then like waiting for Death to come and get me or the movie to end -which ever came first AND it just seemed like this movie would never end!! The plan to escape using the old man as a hostage might backfire as if you panic and kill the old man you will no longer have a defense plus the monster might not understand that you mean harm to the man or it does understand and kills you. I would honestly give up and accept my fate trying to make myself comfortable as I already know that it won't kill me. The alternate timeline were I am brave is to use the bottles and glasses as a projectiles or break them and throw the shards on the ground outside the door. After breaking the bottles and glasses I would look for a long heavy object as a weapon .Then I would close the door and ring the bell. when I hear the monster outside I would open the door and swing for the arms. Since the monster is distracted it won't look up to block my attack. I could do this but at the time I am writing this comment I am 12 so I probably would not be able to break the monsters arms. I'm basicly dead weight and I would understand if I was left behind. aside from the plan of using the old man as hostage all of the other plans cinema summary mentioned are pretty good. (please like this comment he littaraly says to post your solutions but all the comments I see say "have damn good day". If you read all of this good for you.)
