I interpreting the mother as being so scared of the man that she even backs away from the room. He more than likely brutally abused her and so she only knows violence. I did not think the mother cared for him, but lived in fear of him

It’s feels way more creepy when you realize while they were asleep the mother was just strolling around the house watching them sleep.

Skarsgård is such a good actor, the whole beginning of the movie I was waiting for him to be the killer but also at times he sounded so genuinely confused like when she was stuck in the basement, but the scene where he sat at the table with the wine waiting for her to turn the corner was gold.

For starters, don't stay in a strange house in a strange neighborhood with a strange man. You have a car, LEAVE!

The scene with the police officers was frustrating. Her being dirty and disheveled doesn't equate to crackhead or mental illness. And cops working in that area should know that, based on experience. I've worked with people from both of those populations. She was clearly upset and scared and not high or anything of the sort. Very coherent! They were acting like they don't live in a world where people, especially women, are snatched up and held hostage or worse.

I couldn’t stop laughing at the scene when the mother jumped off the water tower to dive after the girl lol. The whole theater bursted out laughing 😂

She is crazy. Warned by the interviewer and still went back. Why help him after she warned him. He gets bitten and refused to leave the basement?? What? Everybody was stupid!! Lighting the house as they left would have been effective.

That homeless guy said he's been there for 15+ years, why the hell doesn't he find another place to stay knowing full well that that mutant roams the streets every night? When he said "I've stayed here for 15 years and she's never found me", it made me shake my head and wonder what the hell is wrong with him?

how is it possible that not just one, but SEVERAL people walk into the basement just to say "oh wow, this room is clearly meant to hold someone captive and maybe even murder them - let's keep investigating deeper into the torture dungeon"?!?

Imagine being in an abandoned suburb, in Detroit of all places, and not packing some heat

I already watched the movie, and gotta say, it's fucked up and creepy at the same time.

Could you imagine if the movie ended with her, after finding the hidden room, just says "Fuck this". Then tries to book another air bnb or stays in her car until it's time to go home. Getting the job. Turning from a potential horror movie to a fun getting a job movie? 🤣

I wish someone would make a movie where the one with common sense keeps their common sense instead of suddenly losing it to 'go check on the potential perp or vic'. T_T I mean I know it'd only be like 2 minutes long but it would be such a relief to watch a character leave and hear about the demise of the others. Have a damn good day.

I wouldn't have gone in the basement. I'm under the impression that out of all the places in the house the attic and the basement are the places where people die, are tortured, held captive, locked away, are brutally murdered, and also where the killers and stowaways are hiding... So I just never go in those parts of the house even when I know it's safe.

In the ending, the mother/monster actually knew that Tess was about to shoot her but she loved Tess so much like she was her own child so she just let Tess shoot her.

As a woman I can confirm it's not paranoid. Being murdered is one reason why most women carry pepper spray. Seriously this is a legit fear to the point of millions taking precautions. She should know better then to stay alone with a stranger.

How did the property owner and property manager not know about the old man and mutant mamma living in the house?

For the first few minutes I genuinely thought this was a funny reaction to "Love in the Villa" -- a film where 2 strangers booked the same room and decided to stay and date for some reason.

Now I'm a hundred percent sure that before making a horror movie they dial down the character's IQ to 40 and put them in horrible scenarios LMAO

I personally didn't find the movie scary or particularly good, and it bummed me out because I was looking forward to it. I know she was freaked out and probably in shock. But, she had been missing for weeks. Would nobody have reported her missing? Even if not, she should have thought of that and told the police to look her up, to corroborate her story.

Going for the memory card in the camera is a good way to get trapped in that room, there isn't any reason to risk that for evidence when you don't have to prove someone guilty of a crime to survive

I wouldn't say it's suspicious that the guy at the air bnb doesn't have a car there. With him knowing about the medical conference, it could be assumed he flew in and took an Uber or taxi to the accomodation. With all the hotels full it's clearly a huge conference so people would be coming from all over, and not everyone would be driving.

Another thing you have to consider is if she had left the basement through the window she still has no idea if that man (who we don’t know is good yet) is still out there waiting to attack

Also, what was the point of her sending pics of Skarsgård's characters I.D to her loved ones if they didn't report her missing after she never came back from her scheduled interview/stay. Like she's been missing 2 weeks, surely someone who knew of her stay would've noticed and reported her missing, thus a police call to the house and seeing all her stuff (car, her items, dirty dishes never touched), still there, they would see the basement window had been broken; leading them to investigate basement and see the mystery room. Finding her and both the mama and serial killer dad.

1) as soon as I would have driven into the neighborhood and saw how all the houses are abandoned but that house I would have reversed it out of there, went to Wal-Mart and just drank some energy drinks to power thru until the next day. 2) this movie REALLY expects me to believe a woman would just willingly stay with a strange man in a strange place in a basically abandoned area?

This was the most infuriating movie to watch because literally no one would have made the decisions these people made.

Can you also do The Autopsy of Jane Doe? That one freaked me out a lot and I’d rather watch a How to Beat Video than try and watch it.

Good review!! Saw this in the theater and thought the first 1/3 of movie was good - it just sucked you in. Then, when it suddenly cut to Justin Long's character on the highway, think that is where it ran out of gas and just could not get back the intrigue from the beginning. It was then like waiting for Death to come and get me or the movie to end -which ever came first AND it just seemed like this movie would never end!! Wanted to get up and leave, but with today's movie prices...sucked it up hoping that the movie would get better, but...If people liked this movie - awesome, but with that sudden change, it just killed the movie for me.

The plan to escape using the old man as a hostage might backfire as if you panic and kill the old man you will no longer have a defense plus the monster might not understand that you mean harm to the man or it does understand and kills you. I would honestly give up and accept my fate trying to make myself comfortable as I already know that it won't kill me. The alternate timeline were I am brave is to use the bottles and glasses as a projectiles or break them and throw the shards on the ground outside the door. After breaking the bottles and glasses I would look for a long heavy object as a weapon .Then I would close the door and ring the bell. when I hear the monster outside I would open the door and swing for the arms. Since the monster is distracted it won't look up to block my attack. I could do this but at the time I am writing this comment I am 12 so I probably would not be able to break the monsters arms. I'm basicly dead weight and I would understand if I was left behind. aside from the plan of using the old man as hostage all of the other plans cinema summary mentioned are pretty good. (please like this comment he littaraly says to post your solutions but all the comments I see say "have damn good day". If you read all of this good for you.)
