M'kay, I've watched this movie before. And if Shuya had the guts to kill to stay alive, his weapon is actually very useful. Since the lid of the trash can has a sharp edge and is flat, he could have used it to knock down any approaching threat and slit their throats with the sharp edge he had. An his partner/ friend/ crush had binoculars, they could have spotted their surroundings the pair of binoculars she had in her bag, seeing if this was a safe place, and if there were enemies approaching they could have used their natural instinct of fight or flight. Fight for Shuya to fight them off, or Flight , so they could've hidden before the enemy had even taken notice that there were people hiding there. But like, I'm just sayin' they could have made way better use for their weapons instead of treating it like it was useless. But also this is just like my theory, I really cannot judge because of their mindset, having to kill their classmates that are close with each other and knowing each other personally.

first thing i'm doing is trying to see if i can get anything from the starting room. i wanna be prepared before i head out, and i certainly ain't gonna be with the rush, because that would spell out almost certain death. then, i'm basically just trying to get to as isolated a place as possible, so i can keep finding stuff. i get tired, i hide underground using leaves and stuff. i need to move, i do what you said and stay on an intersection for as long as possible, sussing out the most isolated safe zones. i have a low chance of surviving a fight, so i wanna avoid them as long as possible. by the time i'm found, i'll hopefully have a good defensive setup, protecting myself as much as possible so i can get as simple of a fight-back as possible. and maybe i can figure out how to rig up some sort of primitive sniper setup or something like that, so i can clear others out as safely as possible. and when it comes to getting sleep later on, i can find a small pipe or something to ventilate some underground hidey-hole. something inconspicuous.

What I'd immediately would notice sucks the most is its a government sponsored program. That changes some things about the long game dramatically. If you were kidnapped and forced to do this by some psycho like Jigsaw or some bizarre private group like in Squid Game it would mean survival means, ultimately, escaping your captors, be it by playing by their rules or not. But being a GOVERNMENT sponsored program, and with the confirmed presence of a previous winner in the game, it means even winning ultimately results in possibly losing. Its clear that former winners can be re-enrolled into the program, and it being Government sponsored means it has military level intelligence and resources you, as a normal human being, will not be able to escape without assistance from outside forces. Even if you did everything right and wound up winning your first battle royale, the second time around you'd have to start thinking about some more serious solutions to the larger problem at hand, like disabling or removing the collars and faking your death in the process. Even an all-powerful opponent like a Government will not look for you if they think you are already dead.
