It was obvious from the beginning that whoever planned this wasn’t gonna let anyone escape. The way I saw it, there were 3 options for how it ends: 1. The chosen dies & everyone else lives (laughably optimistic), 2. The chosen is the only one who lives (turned out to be kinda true), or 3. No one lives (also only partially true). Revenge games are all about suffering. Option 1 provided the least of that. Option 2 guarantees the lone survivor will do so w/ trauma, despair, & guilt. Option 3 would only give temporary suffering.There was only one choice that made sense for the planners. The mom was the initial sacrifice, & she’s the only actual player who lived. But not w/o loosing everything & becoming broken beyond repair. Hence why Option 2 is the winner.

Despite all of the convoluted plot points and reveals for the sake of reveals, there's something really refreshing about Rule #3 not being a possible out, even if you make the logical leap that it would be. Why would "removing yourself from the pool" mean that you're safe? It just means that you've lost all value to everyone there, including the killers.

What they should have done at the very beginning was go around the group and each give reasons why they should not be picked to die - that way anyone who would be willing to sacrifice themselves could simply not give a reason or give terrible reasons, and thus offer themselves up without officially offering themselves up.
