How to beautifully cut your own hair (M by Mickie) 

Don't even listen to anyone who's giving you shit for posting this. It basically just saved me. I have horrible anxiety and have trouble being in situations where I feel trapped or like I can't leave (like a hair salon). I used to go to a family friend who would cut it at her house but she moved so I've just had my mom trim it whenever it got too long.. For the first time in 5 years I look like I went to a salon to get my hair styled and it makes me feel so much better about myself.. I love it every time I look in the mirror

I’ve been procrastinating getting my hair cut for so long that I just had enough, so I found this video and cut off about 6” of my hair. It looks awesome and it only took a few minutes. Thank you sooo much for making this video!

I'm a licensed hairdresser and I just wanted to tell you that you did a fantastic job!! The cut came out great and you are gorgeous 💟

I’m a licensed cosmetologist and I think the ONLY thing I noticed that I would suggest correcting is the scissors. I know professional scissors are expensive, but there is a reason why we don’t use household scissors to cut hair in salons. Process scissors also have a specific weight and balance to them that helps them to cut through even thick and coarse hair like a razor blade and quickly. When you’re trying to get even, shag type layers and to do an inverted cut on the ends, the sharper the scissors the better. I would recommend going to Sally’s or a beauty shop other than Wal-Mart and shelling out the money for quality scissors. You’ll get great results and lose less length in correction cuts over all. Otherwise you rocked it girl!!!

Oh my goodness, THANKS. I haven't been able to afford a haircut in years. Well- I mean, I could, but it feels like a waste of money to me, since I am lower end of the income scale. I never get anything fancy done, but it's always still $30+, unless I want them to mangle my head at supercuts. And they ALWAYS do. This is perfect, just did it in about 20 minutes. I actually put in a few more layers, just remember that the innermost side of the upside down pony tail need to be the shortest. Since my hair has a wave to it, never lays perfectly flat, I didn't have to snip the tip too much. It looks great!

I've been cutting my hair for years (I cut my hair too often to go to a salon and I like to do things myself) and it's always been so abrupt and blunt and layer-less. This video helped me learn how to have my hair be like all the other pretty girls at my school. I'm disabled so I have very low self-esteem as it is and I never really felt pretty. About a month ago I watched this and did what you did and I love it! I feel more confident at school and I'm actually excited for school cause I feel like I fit in more. Years ago I first watched this video and had doubts, and my doubts increased as I studied cosmetology in high school and learned proper hair cutting techniques. A year ago from yesterday after almost a year out of high school and not being able to afford a salon visit, I decided to turn back to this video. This was already a big step for me because scissors had not touched my hair since the 8th grade and it was long enough to sit on by this point. April 2018 I felt spontaneous and wanted to change my appearance for once, so I whipped out my shears and a pair of scissors and pulled up this video. The first round of haircutting I did on myself was a little too drastic in difference in length front-to-back, but I went for it again a few days later and ended up LOVING the result. My hair ended up being just past my shoulders, but it felt really short to me and I was obsessed. I loved the new look and the ends of my hair were nice and even, and a year a day later today I plan to cut it very soon. Thank you so much Mickie, you're a life saver

I am a hairdresser and it is self explanatory. Cutting hair is about angles and how u project the hair from the head when u cut it. If u pull ur hair all the way up and cut it, sure it is gonna create layers. Since the hair closest to where u pull will become shorter due to the distance from the scalp and to the level of where y hold ur hand when u cut. The furter away, the longer the hair will be. Love it:)

Hi! Your video brought back memories. I am now 70 yrs old. In the late sixties 3 of us in residence decided to do this. It was the Farrah Fawcett cut (a beautiful model and actress in her day.). We cut it much shorter-about a couple inches past the elastic. It came out perfectly.

This totally works IF you do like Mickie does and comb, comb, comb that hair smooth, and take your time and measure. Her hair looks great! I followed this tutorial on my own hair and it worked great (and I'm a licensed cosmetologist). Great video!

Yes this really works (please read the comments below of others that raved about it) 2. Does this leave your hair in a "V" shape in the back? No, not if you cut it straight across as I show, it won't. 3. Will this cut give me layers? Yes, it will give you layers. 4. If you don't want layers, how can I cut my hair straight across? I don't know, I cut my hair this way and LOVE it! 5. Yes, you do hear water in the background. We have a water feature in the room where I film, I've learned to turn it off in future videos:) 6. My blush… I know it's a bit on the heavy side. I'm a make-up artist and I just finished shooting a video on a make-up haul I did. I've cut my own hair this way since I came across another video similar to this one. I love the way it turns out every time. I also cut the length when it gets too long. I found another video that shows you how to cut the length yourself. It comes out almost perfect with the exception of a few stands.

I am married to a hairdresser and my son is a barber... however, they do moan when I ask for a trim! LOL. Hey, I do exactly what you do! The only thing I would STRESS is to get some decent scissors (and be careful not to snip fingers when chopping in - they are sharp). You have done a fabulous demo for long, layered hair xx

But after washing it and such now she said it's very nice she likes it lolm I just saved her 80-90 bucks because my hair was long like yours. I'm thinking of going little more shorter. I come back to this vid every time I want to cut my hair with layers and each time I'm struck by how kindly you explain everything. It doesn't feel like watching a tutorial (which generally involves me scrambling to try and follow all the instructions). It feels more like hanging out with a friend and having them explain what they're doing so casually and relatably. Thank you for being such a gem!

I just tried this and it worked perfectly! I have thin, long hair and took off 2 inches. the back remained pretty much straight across how it was before (which i did not expect!) and the layers are a nice touch. It did not help with my bangs of course, but it is for sure the easiest way to give yourself a trim. Thanks so much for the video, Mickie!!!

I've been cutting my own hair this way for more than 20 years. Started doing it after guessing it might work. And it did. It's an excellent way to cut off split ends too. :)

Did this today, and it turned out AWESOME. I had not had a haircut in six years and had terrible split ends. Cut all of them off following these directions and it is perfect. I did use professional shears and made sure that the ponytail was VERY smooth and even. This worked a charm and saved me so much money. Thank you!!!

I've tried other videos before to trim my own hair; this is by far the best one - the thing that made the biggest difference for me was suggesting to hold the hair straight up as you cut it. It actually made a huge difference as opposed to some fo the videos I've seen where people hold it straight out in front and cut. The layers are much better. Thank you so much! :)
