You just lifted my spirits, I was so concerned about having my BS and now going back for 2 years for associates in Dental Hygiene. I'm taking the same route as you right now. Thank you so much for this. I'm super excited to start my program!!!!
THANK YOU for commenting this. The whole purpose of this channel is to help us not feel alone and I'm glad that we can both have that in common. Sending you the best positive, toothy vibes your way :)
Hi, I'm a 26-year-old mac makeup artist/cosmetologist and I'm really considering going to school for dental hygiene. I know it's a big leap and I'm being honest when I say I'm not the smartest and I know that. I also get bored easily which is why I've been so indecisive about a serious career for myself but I've always been really good in science/biology. Now that I'm getting older I'm becoming more serious with my life decisions. I just hope and pray my teacher is as exciting and informational as you are. I'm so glad I found your channel! I know it's not going to be easy but I want to make sure that this is something I'll enjoy doing and something I could possibly understand and succeed in and your personality is everything and really helped me make my decision. Thank you!
Thank you for not putting down an AS degree, I feel like some hygienist look down on us with AS degree, honestly it's all about what works for you and how timing is for you. I'm currently in an accelerated program and will finish in 18 months.
I am doing option A!!! I just found out I got into Dental Hygiene school at my community college I attended for Dental Assisting! I'm so excited to start my Dental Hygiene journey ❤️! I love your videos!
I earned an Associate's degree in Dental Hygiene in 2002. Last year I was able to finish up my Bachelor's degree online. Many dental hygiene programs offer the online Bachelor's now. Option F. 😁
Thank you so much for making videos like this. I can easily Google this stuff, but Google doesn’t EXPLAIN & SHARE personal experience. You’re awesome! I appreciate this more than you know!
thank you so much for commenting this! truly makes me so happy and motivates me to continue creating videos. wishing you the best on your career journey!
I am a hygienist in Washington state. I got my BASDH from a technical college here! In fact there are multiple community college options that offer bachelors here.
NikkieChicki what college ? I’m planning to go that route . I been looking at technical college , community college, university . It’s so hard to decide one
Im a male 17 year old soon to be senior in hs, and this is what I’ve always wanted to do and I can’t wait to start college, and btw just because I’m a guy I’m not gonna let that get in my way to success. I’m gonna define all odds I promise ;)
What about going to a community college for an associates degree and then transferring to a university to make it a bachelors degree in dental hygiene?
what benefit would you get from going to a community college for dental hygienist then a univeristy. (im about to be a senior in highschool this year so i would like to know) please respond!!!
@@marlon7s That's specific to the community college you attend. Generally speaking, credits from a community college will always transfer to that states' university. An example is if you go to a CC in California, your credits will always transfer to any of the University of California. It is more difficult to transfer to an out-of-state university, though. As some will require different classes. Certain community colleges may have agreements with out-of-state universities. You would have to speak to the transfer department at your community college to get more details.
Im enlisted into the marines, when i get out i wanna be a dental hygienist and its all to be able to have a stable career as i pursue my dream of becoming an actor. So that fact that you mentioned acting made me be like 😳😂
Design Once you suck it up and take those pre reqs. I didn’t like Microbiology or Chemistry, but you have to take them. No one wants to take pre req classes lol.
I have a Bachelors already in a different subject but I want to become a dental hygienist. What did you do exactly to become one? And which school did you go to? I just want my AS in in it but they mostly offer Bachelors :/ How can I become one fast?
If I were to do option C and get my bachelors degree in something else, would it have to be science related since you said you got your bachelors in biology/chemistry? I really want to do dental hygiene but I also want to own a business one day. Could I major in business AND take my pre-req’s so I could then apply to the 2 year dental hygienist program or would that just be too distinctive and impossible? Please help!!
Option M...Join the military...not Marines, their medical care is provided by the Navy...join for a dental job...everyone calls it a different thing...while you are doing it take as many college classes in anything that you can anyway you can...CLEP, online, independant study, colleges nearby etc. ... the GI Bill will pay for almost the entire cost of your BS degree at almost any college (even very expensive ones) and pay you a living stipend when you are going to school (amount depends on cost of living in your schools area New York City is about $3,400 a month)...because you did a bunch of classes while you were in you should be able to grad in 3 years or less...if longer then its only because the prereq need to be over a 4 year time...or you could do Plan C this way...get an Assoc. Dental Hygiene and a Bacc in whatever...THIS is also a good thing to do if you think you might want to become a dentist in the future...you have all the prereq done...you have experience working in a dentist's office...military time...and if you get in you'll have no problem getting the military to pay for all your dental school costs through HSPS program.
Thank you for making a good video about dental hygiene for us. it really helped. :) I am married to American few months ago and we are planning to move to the states soon. I am korean and not super fluent english yet but I want to know if international students can catch up the courses. I would appreciate if you could share your ideas.
love your video! i’m probably going to go with option C. i’m finishing up my fourth year in college majoring in biology and then planning to do two years at a dental hygiene program at a community college if i get accepted. does having a bachelors degree help with getting accepted into DH school? is option C common? when I tell people i want to get an associates in applied science after my bachelors degree, they all look at me funny, thinking i’m going backwards. did you ever encounter that?? i try to ignore it because looking at the DH program, the courses seem just as challenging as what i did with my bio major!
I can't answer for everyone - but for myself, yes people looked at me funny too! But, I wasn't the only one in my DH program who took this route! I feel this trend may start becoming more popular. And, each school and program is different & has different systems on how heavy they weigh the importance of a bachelors degree. However, I personally feel having a bachelors made the DH program much smoother and less stressful for me! Hope this helps!!!
Yesss!!!! Thank you so much!!! I have a quick question, and I know you may be able to answer it considering you're already an RDH: do you think someone could work as a clinical DH while working towards a DDS? Like, do you think I could work as a hygienist while going to dental school to be a general dentist??
If I am wanting to become Dental Assistant and Dental Hygienist, so if I choice option B, which certificate/licensed should I need study first? Anyway, thank you for the amazing and full of good details video.
Hi Whitney, do you have older adult students In your class? Long story short I am 32 and thinking about going back to school to be a RDH. I was dental assistant for a few years but went back to corporate when I had my kids. I miss the dental field and ready to jump back in. Do you see dentists hiring younger RDH vs mature ? Do you think the physical toll is worse on an older adult?
Hi! I graduated from DH school a few years ago - however, YES! I had several returning students in my class, many with families and kids of their own! It's totally acceptable. You do you! As far as hiring, everyone is so different, but truly my feeling is age does not matter. As long as you are responsible and reliable that's all that should matter! Same with physical toll... everyone's body is different. All ages practicing good ergonomics should be fine. Hope this helps! Good luck with everything!!!!!!
Hi Whitney, I've been watching some of your videos and you have been extremely helpful in helping me make my decision on whether or not to go back to school! So, thank you! I have a few questions for you if you don't mind? 1.) I'm also in the Chicago area and have applied to two schools: Malcolm X and College of Dupage. Do you mind sharing which college you went to and what your thoughts are about it? 2.) I'm 48, and wondering if I put in all the effort to go to school for two years, will I even be hired. Do you have any knowledge about whether or not dentists will actually even hire someone who is 50+? Obviously, it's a lot of money and time to go back to school, and I wouldn't want to waste either if I won't get hired due to my age.
In my highschool I have the chance to come out with both my High school diploma and an associate's degree because we have college classes. So if I DO get my associates does that mean I'll only have to do the two dental school years after high school?
I thought there was a route of 2-3 years. I'm just curious, because I really want to be a RDH as fast as possible (I would like to take accelerated courses or something to finish in just two). Is this possible? This sounds to me like route A. I assume its possible to crunch down the prereqs into just one year or less by taking summer classes.
Thank you for this video! How do you complete the application process to get into the Dental Hygiene program when you have no experience in this field? It seems like DA's are getting noticed the most, but what about someone who has absolutely no dental experience? Thank you!
Hi Whitney, im currently a senior in highschool and the university i’ll be attending doesnt have a dental hygiene program. Are you saying that I should just major in anything as long as im meeting the requirements of the dental hygiene program that i want to apply for? I’m very nervous to only carry an associates as I’m worried that it wont be enough to get a job in a big city.
Hi Avery! Every school is different - I would recommend talking to both your current advisor AND to an advisor from the dental hygiene program you are looking into. Hope this helps!
So the diffrence means that i have to study 2years prerequisite to get into dental hygine and finish my 2yrs to have associate degree so total 4yrs to have associate in dental hygiene. Does it mean option B going into 4yrs bachelor in dental hygiene i dont have to study prerequisite to get in its included in those 4years? Pls help me understand
Generally yes!!! There are some cases where you might be able to finish your prerequisites in 1 year, but often times it will take 2. So - technically yes! It CAN take 4 years for either an associates or a bachelors. The biggest difference is price vs time! Hope this helps!
Hi, I'm doing option C too! I'm getting a bachelor's in public relations, but I want to a dental hygiene associates after. Do you feel like getting your bachelor's in something else was a waste of money? What are some reasons why option C is a good choice? (I want to prevent my fam from freaking out lol)
Is it weird that I’m taking my prerequisites at a community college for a semester and then take the hesi exam to see if I’m qualify to enter into the Dental Hygiene program? It looks like for me, the path to be a Dental Hygienist will be less than 4 years. Two woman from the DH program told me to this so I’m good but it’s weird that for some people, it will take them approximately 2 years to do their prerequisites. Well God Bless To Everyone.
What if i go to school for 2 years to get my associates in dental hygiene? Then go to a university for another 2 for bachelors? Would that be an option?
Thank you for the kind comment! I wish I could help, but I honestly do not have any info regarding dental hygiene in other countries!!! PEACE.LOVE.TEETH
@Teeth Talk Girl - i have bachelors degree in Business Management. Am i eligible to take 2 years of associate degree ? you mentioned we have bachelors degree in anything and apply for DH program of 2 years. I am really interested to know. Plus i am also considering to move to Chicago, which school did you go to in Illinois? Thank you so much for all you do.
can totally take whichever route you choose! most dental schools require a bachelors degree so maybe consider a bachelors in dental hygiene - something to look into! hope this helps :)
here's a video of mine that might help: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_sMOhUgOXK4.html and an article all about the RDH journey: www.teethtalkgirl.com/career/rdh/how-to-become-a-dental-hygienist wishing you the best!
Where did you go to school in IL? I want to stay in Chicago, but the closest school with a DH program I’m finding is College of DuPage and that’s about an hour away.
Hi Whitney 😊 I’m in my early/ mid 20s in Australia, and I’ve always been interested in becoming a dental hygienist. I think I would prefer an associates degree as I have other commitments such as work and my social life ect. And I haven’t studied anything for a few years. I’m wondering is an associates degree a little less intense than a bachelor and if so do most universities offer an associates degree in dental hygiene or do I have to get one through studying courses at different t types of collages? I know this may seem like a silly question but I am finding a lot of mixed answers everywhere and don’t really know anyone in the field of dentistry who can help me. Many thanks and kind regards, Caleb 😊
Hi calleb nice to read your comment i am in sydney and plan to take tafe course! But i saw they only available in adelaide now for two years course but you need have dental assitant qualification first
With out makeup you are so beautiful, so thank you about wonderful videos, I’m always watching your dental hygienist videos. Thank you, you are so lovely. 👌❤️👌
I am a frenshman in a university and my major is biology. Is it possible to become a DENTAL hygienist after 2 years of University and of course after passing boards and such..?? Since you technically can also become a RDH with 2 years of associate degree? Please can you help me out
If I just went for an associates degree on Dental Hygiene at a community college, can I continue to get a bachelor on something else? Like Psychology or Education?
Thank you for sharing info! There's no difference between AS degree in dental hygiene and science? The school I want to apply for the dental hygiene program only offers AS degree in science.
In my area - it depends. Sometimes you may get paid more but sometimes not. Check with the program in your area to find out their insight! Hope this helps!
@@TeethTalk I went to dental Assistanting school and started working as an orthodontic assistant. I'm 23 now , will be 24 in July. I'm now realizing I want to do dental hygiene haha 😅 it's never too late to start right? So I have to do 2 years prerequisites and then do my hygiene school 🙏
Hi I have couple of questions please: 1. In the US, do DHs get chairside assistance like dental assistants/dental nurses? 2. Is it possible to do part-time jobs for e.g Saturdays or late evenings? Thanks in advance TTG :)
hi friend! great questions! 1. it depends on the office you work at - some do and some don't. 2. yes it is possible!!! part-time is actually fairly common! for more information about the DH career in USA - here is my hub: teethtalkgirl.com/rdh hope this helps! thanks again for watching!
Wait for option A, would it literally all just be in community collage than you good?? Or is there still more steps to start working as an actual Dental Hygienist. Sorry if I sound stupid but can anyone answer please? haha
not at all stupid question! and yes - there are many community colleges that have accredited programs with the full associates degree - and then all you do after is take your board exams and then you are good! for more information you can visit my career hub on my website: teethtalkgirl.com/rdh
Hi I studied dentistry in india and right now i am in Australia.. i am struggling to clear licensing exam to become a dentist here also.. i was just wondering will it be ok if i apply through your C option as i have bachelor degree from overseas.. would it be counted?
Can I take all my prerequisites in a community college and then go to a 2 year program at a 4 year uni to get a bachelors degree in hygiene? Someone told me it's not acceptable and I got confused
dental school - most often no. dental hygiene school - MAYBEEEEEE but it might be tricky it depends how flexible your work schedule is. hope this helps!
Do i need to know alot of maths to be a dental hygienist? By the way im 13 years old and i really wana be a dental hygienist but im bad in math (Sorry for my bad English)
I am interested in being a dental hygienist but I have already completed my Bachelors in Political Science and currently work for the state. I am really interested in this career path but I am afraid that it is too late for me to start this process. I am 23 years old. Should I still apply?
i was thinking the same thing. is it okay to go to a community college for the prereqs (and pick undecided for the major) and then apply to a university for a bachelors program?
