Due to popular demand, Matt details step by step how he would start a farm from scratch if a person is not fortunate enough to be born into or marry into an existing farm family. This is part three of a three part series and explains what a farmer first needs to focus on on the buisiness side when starting a farm.

Matt, you are the man! I didn’t know much about farming and then my wife and her fam moved to Maryville TN from Vegas (her husband is a lawyer and a UT boy. My daughter is a UC Santa Cruz girl and we are all California beach rats). My cable company started including the RFD channel and the combination of my family moving and RFD peaked my curiosity about farm life. I came across this video series and watched all 3 on how to become a farmer. You are so knowledgeable and your experience on what to do and what to watch out for is really educational. I have now subscribed to your RU-vid channel and plan to watch as many of your videos as I can. I will also keep watching RFD with the daily Rural News and continue my journey into the world of agriculture. I read that farmers are 2% of the population that feeds the 98% of the rest of us. I am grateful. Thanks for the great videos!

Thanks! We just filmed an episode of “Farms of America” for RFD to be released sometime in 2025. One of my cotton planting videos this year documents this. We were also featured on “The American Farm” on the HISTORY channel in 2019 which might interest you. It’s available on Hulu and other platforms. Glad to have you aboard

Excellent work Matt. I’m sure there’s something for established farmers as well in the series.

Yes Matt. It is hard to find skilled labour today but I think the best spreadsheet is over top of our eyes and the bank account is a scoreboard yes farming does suck some years but we keep doing it

I agree with alot of the points. But I don't agree with buying everything local. In most cases they will bend you over bc they know if your not buying the chemical or seed someone else will. Buy some of your chemicals seed from a local company , buy some online shop around. If you can save money why not, keep relationships and ask them to match a price.

That’s just my philosophy and it’s worked well for me but I’ve got some awesome vendors in my area. That’s not true for all areas

I actually have a question and I don't know if anyone can answer it here But I'm going to ask anyway. My parents own a little farm I grew up on Where my parents runs a little business for kids With handicaps being able to ride horses for therapy. But they have this terrible neighbour. Who's also a farmer but he's running traditional farming with growing crops and everything. Now Every now and then he's out working in the fields and some time he's getting close to our end he sometimes crashes into some of our fences That keeps our horses in and breaks it, yet he Never apologise for it. He always does it a couple of times a year and It's not like we have any long history feud with him or anything. We barely know him! But unfortunately my parents are not really doing anything about it and They are getting pretty old. Me and my siblings don't live at the farm anymore unfortunately We have our own lives and families now. I honestly think it's because he wanted the land that my parents own. Now this might sound like a dumb question, but is there anyway to handle a difficult Neighbour like that? Apologies for any spelling error, English is not my first language.

I’d get the law or an attorney involved if the fence is definitely on your property and he’s damaging it. He’s liable for it
