Sugawara no Michizane was a poet, scholar, and one of the most powerful men in late 9th century Japan. But for centuries he has been worshiped as "Tenjin", a god first associated with thunder, and later with learning. This video tells the story of how that happened.

I’m not at all into Japanese history but I enjoyed learning about a great man whom I otherwise would never have known without this great video.

I first heard about Tenjin from the anime Noragami, where he is a supporting character...it never occurred to me that I'd come across one of the most interesting figures in Japanese history.

Sugawara no Michizane is far from the only man, who later became a demon/god. Especially the Heian-Era knew several of them: Prince Sawara (died November 8, 785), who was accused of murder and starved himself to death after he was exiled. Taira no Masakado (died March 25, 940), who let a rebellion and claimed the position of emperor for himself. And of course the most powerfull of all: Emperor Sutoku (died September 14, 1164), who after an insult cursed the imperial house (Japan was ruled by samurai for the next 700 years)

Really glad you liked it! Unusually I happened to have saved my sources for this video in a folder, so I've added them in the video description now.
