Phra Dan (Bhante Dhammarakkhita, Bhikkhu) is a Theravada Buddhist Monk who lived in India from 2020 and Thailand from 2023. Born in Sussex, England in 1967. Educated by French Catholic Monks. A successful businessman in Estate Agency and Financial Services during the 1980's and 90's. Married, now divorced with 3 adult son's. 2000 marked change and travel including South Africa returning to the UK in 2003 to continue different work and business activities until 2012. Gradually materialistic values turned to renunciation, simplicity and meditation, living nomadically in an old Ford Transit van full time for 3 years. VanLife and meditation led to Buddhism and a Thai Forest Tradition, Theravada Buddhist Monastery in the UK. During 2015 travelling the Buddhist Holy Sites of India, deep faith reinforced desire for Ordination. In 2020 after 5 years of intensive meditation practice between Thai Forest Monasteries in Thailand and England he was Ordained in India where he lived for 3 years until returning to Thailand in 2023.

I was also born in 1967 and converted to Buddhism two years ago after a life-changing experience with a benevolent presence filling me with joy in renunciation of my ego. But I became a father 14 years ago and trying to live as much on the path to liberation as possible but in the challenges which a worldly lifestyle is giving you on a daily basis. I have not found a sangha at my hometown but I am respecting and studying the dharma and feel at home here. I think sooner or later my realisation of the ultimate truth will change my life and of all sentient beings for the better, meanwhile I will sit and meditate and respect the eightfold path.

Thank you very much for explanations bhante. I think renouncing the worldly life makes more sense than the worldly life (everything we have and the people we are attached to must be left behind one day...) but after a 30day-retreat in a Thailand Monastery (Wat Pah Nanachat) as "servant", I know that I am not ready to do so yet because my kilesa and my attachments are still very strong. But maybe one day (or life haha)...

Interesting, beautiful and quite inspiring. Gratitude for the time and the video.The idea of becoming a monk has often popped in my mind, but I do not think I am either ready to such radical lifestyle change or do not know if it is for me. Also I am fundamentally a Buddhist as in following the 5 precepts, and keep a meditative practice (but not regular I would have to admit) but I basically believe in a supreme deity, which I am not sure would fit well within the Buddhist mindset, or if that would even be accepted. I am a fan of Near Death Experiences and spoke to some who had them even, and they all speak of a Source of Love, where we come back. Much love and light in your path.

Many unwholesome aspects of my mind present, that I confess and confront. 227 rules would be more than I could remember and follow with all the prohibitions. And it is a longer process than that to become a surgical specialist. Did Buddhist teachers talk about what distinguishes them from a cult?
@englishmonk

There's only one rule, do no harm the others just support this intention. What is a cult?

Here in Australia it's hard to find any monastary at all. There is one in Perth but they have a waiting list and don't have many rooms. What should I do Phra Dan? I am eager to start but don't know how in my position
