Great video. I started as an LPN and kept going to associate, BSN , currently on MSN and definitely will do DNP. I haven’t had a year without school and I know it will. Be worth it. I had my child as well and is the reason that keeps me going . Thanks

You’ve got this! ❤️ Im a single mom of 4, and have had children through my journey. I went from CNA, LPN, RN, about to graduate my RN-BSN program. Then onto BSN-DNP. It’s taken me years longer than others and I’ve had to stop for a year or so in between to work and make money to take care of my kiddos. You can do this! Even if it’s baby steps at a time. 🎉 Wish you the best!

Hey Sydney! This video is inspirational! Any tips for burnt out nurses? I have been sitting on the idea of DNP for awhile but waiting for the perfect "timing". I have 4 years of experience as an RN with a BSN (travel nursing has burnt me out) I am in the process of changing my specialty to L & D and applying to a program while learning women's health. In the DNP program you attended is it specialty based or general education as in the BSN/AS degree programs?

Thank you !!! I appreciate the support. Sounds like you have a ton of experience and ready for a change. I think NP/ DNP is a great route to advance and nit feel so burnt out. Yes the program is general, of course if you’re considering women’s health, FNP is the best option.

The people hurt by the lack of training of NPs will be minorities and people in poverty. Even the "superior" NP programs produce "providers" with a fraction of the training of physicians (average 6%). If you want to practice medicine, go get an MD/DO. Patients need to advocate for themselves and get the care they deserve.

@eshapiro9585
@eshapiro9585 9 месяцев назад
As an economist, I understand that statistics can be presented in various ways to support different arguments and obviously that’s what’s being done here to claim that DNP nurse practitioners have 6% of the education and training of an MD. From my understanding, MDs do not study anything directly medical in their undergraduate degrees and only take the same prerequisite courses that are generally also required for a bachelors of nursing. So that certainly shouldn’t be counted towards “training“ of a physician. My understanding is that medical students then spend a total of two years in classes after their bachelors degree, which they often do not attend and are not required to attend at top medical schools and are also pass/fail more and more because medical students at that stage are instead mainly spending most of their time studying for a set of standardized tests. Hence, these 2 years provide background, but are not necessarily direct medical training. There are then two years of direct training in rotations, followed by residencies which for a family physician is only three years. So basically they spend five years in direct medical training +2 years of indirect sort of classroom experiences. Considering the number of years of direct classroom work, which, for nurses and nurse, practitioners is more focused directly on their field of practice and their additional multiple preceptorships, and the practical hands-on nursing that is also required just to get into some of these programs, and that they typically engage in while also studying such as the woman in this video, the statement that DNP nurse practitioners have, 6% of the training of medical doctors, seems to be a huge exaggeration at best, and likely mostly very dishonest. Importantly, DNPs then practice in areas that are set out specifically for their professions. They are not pretending to be MDs. They practice within roles that the medical and nursing boards have determined are appropriate for their certifications and training. No one is being hoodwinked by a DNP practicing within the DNP field as your statement suggests. In addition, some savvy consumers prefer a nurse practitioner over an MD, especially for specific areas of practice, such as OB/GYN and PMHNP because they report receiving better care. This indicates that while DNP training is different than MD training, DNP training can result in better care for certain patients or for many patients in certain areas of practice (in addition to certainly being generally competent across the board).

@@eshapiro9585 You are severely misguided. I’ll dissect point by point. Having a bachelors in the science of nursing and as a medical student, I can speak from direct experience on these topics. 1) nurses and doctors do NOT take the same prerequisites. They take *some* of the same classes. Most nursing programs do not require biochemistry, organic chemistry, physics or any upper level biology or chemistry. Many colleges have “non major” or “nursing” chemistry or biology to satisfy these requirements, and they are MUCH less difficult. 2) You assume that the “preclinical”years have nothing to do with medicine and that is completely untrue. The foundations in the hard sciences are what make you an expert clinician. They are the core and necessary foundations to medicine that nurses don’t require. 3) Saying that the first 2 (preclinical) years of medical school aren’t relevant to medical training is completely nuts. When do you think doctors learn to diagnose and treat patients? And it’s not just thing for some board exams. I take courses where in tested practically weekly on very difficult topics. I also take courses on patient interaction, advanced assessment, cadaveric dissection. Your assumption that these aren’t considered medical training is wildly inaccurate. 4) Saying NPs work within their scope of practice assumes they have one. Acute care NPs (ANP) and family nurse practitioners (FNP) are generalists who can work in a variety of roles… PCP, hospitalist, pediatrics, you name it. These are not specialized whatsoever. NPs can specialty jump.. a year as cardiology np… a year as a general surgery NP. With zero actual formal standardized training. 5. The average NP school has 500 clinical hours required. The average MD/DO primary care doctor has 15,000 clinical hours once graduating residency. You so the math. 6. As someone who saw patients full then for 4 years. I can say many are “hoodwinked” by a “doctor” walking into their hospital room with a white coat and saying “my name is doctor..” Especially our most vulnerable patients without an education. The underserved and underprivileged will be hurt most by this project of “big medicine” and corporate greed. 7. “Patients report receiving better care” certainly as a statistician you must be aware of all the data supporting that patients cannot accurately judge what quality of care they are getting. Also, there definitely is data that they produce worse outcomes for patients when not being co-managed by a doctor. This has been shown in many areas. Most of all of the data supporting nurse independent practice was done under supervision and does NOT demonstrate ability to diagnose and treat independently. Although many states are making this the case.

@@sidneymonica dnp NOT Worth it... because they don't really consider you as a "doctor"... You go through regorous DNP program, at the end you still not consider a doctor. Our DNP is gear towards research, not really clinical based, DNP is more academic. So through it, I got sick lost weight, then at the end you are NOT consider a doctor...but a chiropractor (who is NOT really a doctor can be considered a doctor)...do NOT be under chiropractor as your collaboration doctor (only with an MD that you are collaboration with) ( not sure what state you live in?..but where I live I'm not an assistant of anyone but collaboration with MD yes, but NOT Assistant (as Physician assistant).. chiropractor did not go to med school they only have Bachelor degree or an AA degree. Chiropractor will hired NP because NP can Prescribe medicine, Chiropractor cannot Prescribe medication.. You as an NP is higher than Chiropractor. Anyways, it is up to you if you want high stress then proceed with the DNP I've been a FNP for 7years with a very extensive experience. (16 years of RN). After DNP, you don't consider to be a doctor your salary doesn't change, still similar with regular Master degree FNP. If you think it's worth it then follow your instincts. I hope this help. FYI I don't regret my DNP, I love my job as a Family Nurse Practitioner.
