the last 2 years i discovered that i've been subconsciously writing songs since the age of 10. I would always sing and come up with melody alone in my room, while in the shower, even before going to bed, or walking on the street. Im excited to pursue thisss thank you for your video!

Hi! I'm 14 and I really want to get into songwriting and producing. Now I have no experience whatsoever, but i know that i love it, and it's what i want to do in life. So I just would like some more tips other than practice and getting publishers, especially cuz I don't even have one full song written. So basically, i would want some tips for total beginners. Thanks for your help!

@@purityvsprofanity2962 Great. Couple of things first. I lean more into Rap/Hip Hop music but I picked a couple of things up while studying both. So it might be applicable for Pop Rock as well. Study the music genre you want to be part of. For Hip Hop just go back and really take in the artists who popularized it. You're gonna need to know melodies as well as both your genres require things to be catchy. Drake is a good artist to study if you wanna look into the Hip Hop lane, and so is J Cole, but he leans more into Rap for that. Get a sense of what bars are and how to end each bar with a syllable (AEIOU) because those are what catches the listeners attention the most. Study how Hip Hop artists set different moods, and try to get in that mindstate as well. Drake is perfect for those slow tracks or summer hits. Remember that if you wanna make it big, you gotta sacrifice yourself for the art, so really put in those extra hours. People don't get big overnight, it's all a process. Like learn how to use your voice in different ways and how to attack a beat a certain way as well. Some slow acoustic type beats are more melody oriented and just deal with what's on your mind and how shit makes you feel. The same should go for Pop Rock right? The way I went about it is, surround yourself with good music, and good artists. It takes a good ear to make good art. Like let's take two examples. Kid Laroi, with his nasally voice, and you mash them with a more Lofi beat. That'd probably be a good song. Or a Drake on a guitar type beat. That's what most new artists are doing. Just trying things out that sound good now and trying them in different genres. It's all an effort though and hope this wasn't to much to read. Wish you the best though

I started rapping as a teen but over time I developed my love of music and lyrics to start writing songs that are half rap and half singing. I like to fuse the styles together but I'm just wondering if you would consider this song writing? or simply lyricism? I find the distinction a bit confusing but ultimately I believe I am a song writer. I play no instruments and have no classical music knowledge just a passion and a creative mind..

Can anyone give me some tips on how to practice songwriting? Working on the different aspects of it? (like learning guitar, drums, bass, writing lyrics,...) Or do I just work with what I have? I just don't know where to get started. If I just focus on one thing I feel like I lack something. Like said in the video, I feel like I need to be able to do everything on my own but at the start that just feels to overwhelming and keeps me from doing anything at all.

Here's my method for what it's worth. I keep in mind that, according to copyright law, a song is lyrics and a melody. That's it. A song isn't really a chord progression nor a style nor an arrangement. If you can do the equivalent of an old-timey lead sheet that shows the melody, the chord changes, and the lyrics, then you've written a song and from there I suspect paths diverge between doing perhaps just a fairly simple demo to sell the song for someone else to record for real or a better arranged, more complex recording to sell either the song or the actual recording OF the song (for licensing for instance) I start by recognizing if I have a song section - and I might not decide what section it is but once I know I have SOMETHING I'll try to just quickly record enough to have chord changes and a melody. I listen through that and see if my brain wants to give me another section - sometimes it will deliver something right away, almost "here's the chorus" or I try to quickly try a few different chord progressions, see what feels right, record that, then improvise singing a melody over the top until I have something I like. I might come up with more sections than I need and some may get discarded or spun off into another song. This part of the process starts with choosing a metronome setting and USING A METRONOME THROUGHOUT THIS PROCESS. once I've got a chorus and verse, I try to make sure I have a bridge and possibly a prechorus. I don't worry about lyrics at this point. Then I try to get an introduction and maybe a little instrumental 4 or 8 bars tying into the bridge. Bare bones. Strummed chords and a melody, maybe a little countermelody if it comes to me. It sounds really crappy at this point but IS recorded to a click track so I can play around with the audio clips. then I copy and paste the varoius sections together in different sequences and listen through until I have a song structure I like. This will typically be intro > verse > verse > Chorus > verse > Chorus > bridge > Verse >chorus >outro or something like that. you can't go too wrong with a standard song format. I sing total nonsense while I'm getting melodies down. If words come out fine, if not, fine. When I come back later to do lyrics, a few words may stay. Sometimes they actually tell me what the song was going to be about. I write down on one pad what the central thing or things the song is about and then any sub-things it concerns. Then I fill other pads with scribbled phrases, imageries, expressions of speech ....sometimes I'll try writing what I want to say plainly and then sort of translating that into a symbolic poetic way of saying it. I hate writing lyrics. I usually have 5-10 notepads scattered around me for one song and give myself a headache, takes me a few different sessions of that to come up with lyrics I can live with. I'll have one pad gonig with the rhythmic things I need to fill in and slowly take stuff from different other pads until it is done. I keep a dictionary and rhyming dictionary at my side so that if I need to say something but with a different number of syllables or a different rhyme I can get to it quicker. ALWAYS remembering that a song is lyrics and a melody -- and that you don't have a song until you have these things - I don't worry too much about the arrangement, the performance, etc until I have a song. If I start coming up with hooks and instrumental parts I definitely capture that as I go - as quickly and crappily as I can get away with. But I take them down if they spontaneously come - I'm not turning aside to do these things if they aren't popping up uninvited. Once I have my horrible sounding cut and pasted start to finish song with chord changes, a melody, and lyrics, THEN I go back and sing the entire song decently to a click track along with my cut & pasted stuff, then play a decent guitar part and listen again. It's pretty easy at this point to chop the song up and correct decisions on song structure before becoming fully committed. And that's the point at which I have a song. For ME, I go Frankensong > Decent Scratch Vocal > Decent basic guitar part > Good Interesting Guitar Part > Good Interesting 2nd Guitar Part > Drum Programming (no humanization yet) > Bass > any VST instruments be they synths, orchestral, backing vocals etc. Then I'll spend a bunch of time on the piano roll making the drums as human sounding as I can which for me is a painstaking process. Final lead vocals I do almost anywhere in the process but usually at the end. One has to be RUTHLESS in working on a great final lead vocal if you've listened to the scratch vocal 100 times. You can get really attached to it and may need to delete it once you've got the vocal part memorized just to force yourself to not keep it. I had a couple instances of ACCIDENTALLY deleting a scratch vocal or finding there were noises or other recording mistakes that made it a non keeper and discovered once I burned my bridges and freed myself from the scratch vocal, I could come up with a really good final vocal I loved. I do bass after drums because I want the bass to really synch up with what the drums are doing. I try to make bass follow the drums more than anything else (....but I program the drums with just the guitar to go off of) So... I'm always focusing on one thing and it shifts as I go through the process. Don't worry about the next thing until you get to it.

It’s not completely necessary to learn! It is very very helpful, but not necessary! Because if you focus in and become an absolute master at only writing, you can partner and co-write with the musicians and singers who can bring your lyrics to life!

@@OfficialFCMusic How do I master only writing? Can’t play any instrument either, but a poet with some really nice poems and lyrics that I believe shouldn’t go unheard. I can almost rhyme with any word there is in a heartbeat.

@@kikodinhoalexandros2534 I would focus on learning different song forms for the genres you're looking to write for as well as common rhyme patterns used. If you're writing without lyrics make sure that the words fall within the measures and within the format of commercially successful songs. You should consider coming to our upcoming songwriting webinar on July 6th!
