Totally accurate on the don't share too early tip. On a current song I'm working on, I shared a part with my wife early on. Basically I was just excited about how different of a style it was from my prior songs and how good a vocal plugin sounded. She shot it down saying that there wasn't much going on with the vocals. Luckily, I'm too stubborn to be discouraged easily and have since added chord progressions and layers of keys and bass parts and fills so now it's way more filled out. The lesson I've learned about her and other non-musicians is that they are conditioned to only see value in finished products. As musicians and producers, we can appreciate the baby steps in the journey, but we can't expect the audience at large to value those same progress points. Good video!

Just a thought on sharing unfinished ideas. Jack White once said he got an indifferent response to the seven nation army guitar riff from a friend, he took it as a positive as he felt that in fighting for it a little it focused his attention more. Chris Martin made a comment during one of his lockdown gigs that he often has to fight indifference within the band to a raw idea in order to push it through. I guess if you really believe what you’ve come up with, you can overcame a negative initial response.
@PatrickBreenMusic
@PatrickBreenMusic 2 года назад
Thanks for sharing that! And I absolutely agree with you! If you really believe in something you've created, go forward with confidence and boldness! A good friend of mine, who I played music with for many years and wrote with a ton, always would tell me "There's an audience out there for everything, every style of music, every kind of music, you just have to find them." ...and I really believe that. I think when you do something that sounds a little more "main stream" or sounds like the music that's being made today, you're going to encounter less resistance when trying to find a listening audience. However, when you're doing something different (Like The White Stripes did) people will likely not "get it" or not give you a chance at first. But your audience is probably out there. Just speaking personally, I've struggled with that confidence thing for a lot of my life. I'd be willing to bet that a lot of musicians and songwriters share the same struggle. When your confidence isn't fully "developed" I think it's really important to protect your ideas until they're complete. That's the point I was trying to make in that section of the video. Like most things in this world, there are multiple ways to approach the process and ultimately you have to do what works best for you!
@Jesse615

Great thought! I once shared a rough idea of a song with my gf -- she knew, and liked the music, but she was thought the lyrical idea was "stupid" :) It really didn't dissuade me much, though, because I still really liked the idea -- my gut was telling me it was fertile ground; and that the person I cared most about liking the song was me! But if her critique had got me thinking and I wound up not developing it in that direction, it meant that I probably wasn't as keen on the idea myself.

Negative feedback generally happens because of something in the song doesn't work, it loses the listener, and bores or annoys them, b song section length is all out of whack for instance a very long boring intro, not enough substance musically or lyrically in the chorus, weak verses, too many long instrumental solos, c overuse and reliance on acoustic guitar the fill in blanks or carry a poorly written song, d trite, or boring song theme's and topics, I don't wanna know why your girlfriend left with your truck, I don't care if you party a lot, I don't care who your love interests are and chances are the listener doesn't care, if you write like everyone else it's probably going to sound like everyone else.

This was such a well put together and helpful video. As someone who dreams of being able to write and produce my own songs, it can be overwhelming deciding where to focus the time and energy I have….music theory, reading books like the ones you mentioned, studying and practicing my instruments, practicing creative writing, dissecting the songs that inspire me, discovering new music…..I find myself to be capable but by no means a pro in a lot of areas but have the hardest time prioritizing when and what to spend my time on to get the most out of it.

Valueable video. Love most of what you said, however there is at least one trap among your advices: What I mean is to balance between two extremes: one is to share to early, too often with too little attention paid to the quality of a song. And the second extreme is perfecrionism, that may keep you away from giving your song a chance. But regsrdless of this detail, great video!

Sharing is like signing a painting. I know an artist who after finishing his painting, takes over a week to sign it. I totally agree Patrick. I think, make the video and spend over a week listening to finished song for a week before sharing. Then you can be confident in it, no matter what the reaction. Brilliant songs are often rejected. Poor songs are often accepted. The main thing is to be happy in ourselves with what we create.

Thanks Jordan. I know exactly how you feel! Something that really helps me get some fresh ideas coming through is to learn a new song. I've been writing songs for 40 years and it's interesting how much of your tips I had to learn the hard way. No RU-vid in the 70s.. I have 60 demo recordings on my RU-vid channel "Frank Coffey Songs", my most recent is "Going To See Petty" a Tom Petty tribute. In that one I tired to bring in elements of Tom's style into the song. I find that my best songs just come to me from some type of subconscious process I'm not even aware of and then the entire song just starts playing in my head (music and all). I have to just record it as quick as possible before it's gone.
@PatrickBreenMusic

Hey Frank - Thanks for your comment. It's great to hear from someone with your experience and know that we've shared a lot of the same challenges when writing music. I will definitely head to your channel and check out some of your music. The subconscious process you describe couldn't be more spot on. I experience the same thing. I definitely do find, the more available I make myself (i.e. the more I'm practicing and rehearsing) the more opportunity there is for those subconscious, inspiration-filled moments to arrive. Great to chat with you!

I learned all about theory so I could learn how to speak music, but it still doesn’t really make sense to me and I kept going back to writing. But I can sing and I really am drawn to music and want to write more songs. So today I decided to get a chord book, and play each chord, and come up with a word for each chord, so that if I knew enough words maybe I could start speaking music. And maybe if I could string enough words together, I could write a song.

I really wish I saw this video six weeks ago. I started working on an album I was really excited about. I had 4 songs finished and I loved the sound. I had a friend over because he showed interest in joining a band with me. However when I showed him my songs he said he didn't like them, for various reasons, and just seemed generally uninterested in the music. He did try to provide constructive feedback though, by saying what he specifically didn't like. However ever since then I've come up with plans to rewrite and rerecord the songs. However I find myself endlessly ruminating on the songs and I haven't finished any of the rewrites yet. It's now six weeks later and I haven't made any progress on the album, I actually feel like I went backwards. I went from writing a song a week to writing nothing in six weeks. I feel like showing the songs to my friend killed my creative vision and now I feel lost. I don't know what to do now

why do you have to rewrite and re-record the songs? for what reason would you of ever deleted them.
@irascib1e

@@gavsterw I didn't delete the files, but I feel like the songs aren't good anymore. Since I made that post I wrote 1 more song and I showed it to him when I finished it (I only let him see it because it was finished as suggested in this video) and of course he didn't express any interest in the song and immediately started rewriting it. That session helped me realize I can't work with him anymore. I value his feedback but he just doesn't like anything I make

Yeah Way ! The principals for all true belief systems ARE essentially the same Good Orderly Directions a.k.a. GOD Wow --- far out ! And down to earth . Now everything makes more perfect sense ! Thanks for thee head's-up yawl ! however Talk about corruption ! The blood of Jesus is not a blank check to do nothing or be like 'whatever'. Don't just sit there neutralized by blissful ignorance ! "Beware of the genetic-molesting 'leaven' (artificial sugar-coated lie bull HOOKS) of the so-called 'authorities' and scribes trying to sell us all out to the highest bidders." Actually jesus flipped out on the diabolical barbaric practice of selling innocent critters to be kosher slaughtered on the altar in the temple --- as a bogus way for schmuck human-cattle to have their 'sins' forgiven. the original sin was being schmuck enough to eat the forbidden fruit eggs and flesh of innocent critters like snakes do . (suffering causes suffering) Eating innocent critters is very bad karma indeed . thank goodness jesus stuck his own neck out to remind us that forgiveness depends on how we treat even the least of our bretheren ... (How would you like it if nobody cared enough to help you get out of the death-trap pits and snares ?) Man wouldn't it be great if someone else would die so that nobody would ever be held accountable for any sins anymore ? --- sure looks like spreading the other cheek further for the pedophile preistclass to rape everything more easily is backfiring big time ... Too bad --- Easy believers make it way too easy for the great deceivers... The last thing jesus wants to see when he returns with a serious vengence is a another death worshipping meat-cult double-cross... B-Less schmuckered yawl ! we best not let anyone try to scare the friggin Be-jesus outta any of us ! even Greater works than these kinda ones like our prince of peace performs super naturally through us faithfull free radical followers --- shall become the new normal ... Become the type of light worker you want to see in this world ... Like the good shepherd likes to say : "my joke is sweet --- and my burden is LIGHT !" for every step in the right direction we take --- the sun of god takes ten more for us ... get ready for G--ZEUS to return outta the clouds with a batta-Lion of starships (and sun dragons) armed to the teeth --- while the vast army of murdalized martyrs and resurrected saints go marching in with a seriously hilarious vengeance ! --- Leaving No ( peace, happiness, and freedom loving ) stoner left unturned into a hero of sorts ... Thank goodness for thee Divine down to earth Principals of : Peace --- kindness Purity --- integrity Ballance --- mindfullness Patience --- trust Strength --- will power Generosity --- forgiveness Encouragement --- joy Wonder --- insight and Enlightenment --- upliftment ... Anyhow --- Less B-Less-ing and More Best-owing to all yawl ! in all ways remember to stay thankfull and Ask thee GREAT spirit And THEE MOST HIGH intelligent designer located in the heart of all creation for guidance on how we can redeem ourselves most effectively --- rather than merely sit around aimlessly waiting for great pumpkin pie lies in the sky to save us ... So take heed --- and hold fast because the cosmic-director don't take too kindly to procrastinating i - do - laters who delay helping themselves realize how to instruct those that oppose themselves from being more brilliantly redeemed and grateful than ever before ... Muchos Grassyass ! And Goddesspeed ! (Schumann resonance has been off the charts lately) Sure Looks to me Like Empirical evidence of the thee Most High --- blasting out brilliant freedom rock riffs on rainbow coloured guitar strings ! (Guess we'll just have to wait until it dawns on ALL of us !) Lighten up ! And stay positive yet vigilant... And again yawl --- thanks for helping to keep the ideal --- real ! Check out this other stellar alternative cosmic solar weather report : this awesome looking nasa footage of what appears to be a giant black space serpent getting blasted by the sun : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-t0jgkoA3Ywc.html interesting --- how NASA stands for never a solid answer . the spooks are actively blocking huge chunks of their own data and it's making all the independent space watchers wonder what the heck they are trying so hard to hide ... Be aware of the new age pedophile preistclass deceptacon hex-nut Luciferian transhumanist one world religion however. 5D --- or 5G ? if you think the wages for schmucking the whole world into going to war against everything pure and natural and good are astronomically enormous --- yer darn friggin right ! Watch out for them multidimensional illegal-alien shapeshifter demons trying to use celebutard mouthpieces like meat-puppets to sell us all out on the fantasy 5D Deceptacon hex-nut deception --- of trading in our original divine organic living body soul vehicles --- for Crystalline bodies sure sounds more like more transhumanist hogwash motherschmuckery (to this here proud grateful indigenous earthling) Anyhow --- We best not let ANYBODY try to scare or finagle the friggin Be-jesus outta any of US ! So yeah --- ( i know ) good luck with THAT ! Thee Light of god is written in our hearts . . . so Hold FAST and Goddesspeed yawl !

I really wish we could get out of the rise and grind culture of the first recommendation for "how you should tackle this thing" is "Do it every day, whether you're feeling it or not, making it a job even if it becomes unenjoyable." Disappointed to see so much of the video revolve around that bit of advice, which is the basic advice you see everywhere, and is definitely not actually applicable to everyone even though it's always prescribed as universal. Sending good vibes to the people who have taken that to heart (in music or writing or in any other area it's championed) and burned themselves out horribly and killed their passion.
@GeeDeeBird

It's kind of ironic, but I'm equally tired of the culture that thinks talent, luck, or social media presence can guarantee success, and that the concept of working to perfect your craft, experimenting to encourage creativity and committing time and effort to the process is a"grind." If you love your craft, it's not just work, it's a privilege and source of pride. As Thomas Edison said, "Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work," That's as true today as it was then. I'm willing to reconsider if you can direct me to a single great artist who has mastered his or her craft without putting in the work. My sympathy to all the happy souls who spend their best years just doing enough to get by then the rest of their life lamenting about the great things they could have done if they had just gotten a break.

@@GeeDeeBird It's kinda fitting to quote a fraud who made his fortune on theft and shortcuts lol. It's not even a matter of relying on luck or social media or whatever (although realistically luck is a way bigger factor than people like to give it credit for), it's specifically the issue of perpetuating toxic work culture, making people feel they can't take breaks to avoid burnout, conflating healthy work habits with laziness or just not wanting it enough, "hard work" fetishism, etc.
@GeeDeeBird
@GeeDeeBird 3 года назад
@@nosir5596 You clearly don't know anything about Edison beyond the pop culture crap about his rivalry with Tesla (who also believed hard work was necessary to achieve greatness). You're also trying to reframe your original complaint. Working even "when you're not feeling it" isn't toxic work culture. It's dedication. What you describe in your second post is not the same thing. I suspect you know that and are just trying to win an argument. I repeat, the most important and reliable way for an artist or craftsman to attain mastery of his or her craft it's through hard, determination and preference. I repeat my challenge that you cite examples to refute this claim. Without such concrete evidence, further argument is mere sophistry.
@nosir5596
@nosir5596 3 года назад
@@GeeDeeBird ok boomer If you don't get how "literally never take a day off" is toxic work culture i don't know what to tell you lmao. We're not in high school debate club. Working hard and being persistent aren't inherently bad but they can absolutely be taken too far and consistently, almost constantly are in our culture, and the absolute nonsense of "if you love it it won't feel like work" is a big part of that. Passions absolutely do feel like work sometimes and it's very possible to burn yourself out and ruin your passion (and sometimes even your overall health) for something by not listening to your brain and your body when they say they need breaks. And quoting some nonsense witticism from a dead rich guy is hardly offering empirical evidence of anything lol

Hi Andrew and GeeDeeBird- Andrew- Sorry this video left you feeling frustrated and disappointed man! Not my intention at all. In the intro of the video I tried to be clear about the fact that "everyone's process is a little bit different, and I'm certainly no authority on songwriting." I've been writing, creating and releasing things for a little bit now and have found some practices that work well for me. That's all this video is trying to say and share. By no means do I claim that "this is the only way to do it" / "GRIND OR ELSE!" I too get really frustrated with "Hustle culture" and think it makes a lot of people feel ashamed that they're not more like "this entrepreneur" or "that entrepreneur." I'm with you, it's lame. Everyone is made differently and life is all about finding the things that work for you / help you live a happy and fulfilled life. Creativity should be the exact same. I do also agree with what GeeDeeBird said about "If you love your craft, it's not just work, it's a privilege and source of pride." That's how I feel. I don't HAVE to sit down every day and work on my craft, I have the OPPORTUNITY to do so. For me it's a gift not a grind. Mindset is everything. That said, we all need and deserve breaks and time off. I take weekends off to enjoy time with my wife, get outside and live life. By no means am I perfect in hitting any of the practices mentioned in this video and maybe I should have stated that for the viewers. My approach is that goals exist to keep us on the right track, not to keep us perfect. No one can be perfect, obviously. Everyone should do what's best for them and their mental wellbeing. Much love to both of you for taking the time to watch my video and share your thoughts. It's ok to disagree and approach things from a different perspective. Do what works for you and let others do the same. Thanks my friends! 🙂✌️
