How To Become A Teacher. Check out how I became a teacher without a teaching degree.
Becoming a teacher is not as easy as it seems there are certain requirements you have to fulfill before you actually start teaching.
I recommend everyone to spend time in the classroom before committing to a permanent teaching job. Before you start teaching you can become a substitute, volunteer or complete a college student teaching program.
My first career choice was not to become a teacher but I am glad I had a change of heart with this career choice. My journey to becoming a teacher was not easy but I was able to do it without a teaching degree. So yes, there are ways to become a teacher without an actually teaching degree.
As you know I am a high school business teacher and I decided to record some important aspects about teaching. I hope my teacher struggles helps you get out of some teacher obstacles. I love to break down tips and tricks I use in the classroom to help you now as well as in the future. I know teaching can be hard at times but we have to get through it.

You have given me hope and silenced many self doubting thoughts! I have a bachelors degree in psychology. I do love teaching. I taught for VIPKid for a while, and I prepared all 3 of my children for school. Their teachers were surprised at all they had learned at home. I have always been too afraid to jump in the way you were describing, but now I feel like I can not only become a teacher. I can be an impactful teacher. Thank you so much for the inspiration! Hi Toni. It is not necessary to have a bachelor’s degree in education to be a teacher (at least in CA and most states). What is necessary is to have a teaching credential. The teaching credential programs are open to anyone who graduates with a bachelor’s degree regardless of the major. You completed the teaching credential program in 2 years as the HR person said was required to be a teacher and are now a credentialed teacher. Congratulations on your accomplishment! I currently substitute as a math teacher and thought about getting my credential but I’m in my 50’s and just don’t have the energy to do it. Great video and best of luck to you.

I've been trying to find an alternative pathway - been in communication with my state's department of education, and everyone is telling me: go back to school! It's maddening because I already have a degree in Child, Youth, and Family Studies - some of those classes were in education! I'm going to keep trying. Thank you, again, for posting your journey. Same here, I'm a accountancy major, shifted to finance major because the previous one was tough. then I landed an accounting job. I hated it and learned about ESL teaching, and I got a job!

Great video! I’m currently in a master’s social work program, and I’m starting to figure out that social work is something I may not want to do after all. Now, I’m thinking about becoming a teacher. I live in MS, and the requirements are about the same in order to teach.

Honey, I started my career as a Social Worker 20 years ago. Don’t waste your time. Move to something else lucrative and more rewarding. I’m in the accelerated teaching program now. Wish I would have done it 20 years ago.

I'm in CA, and just got my bachelors in healthcare admin. I realize now that I do not want to keep working in this field and want to pursue my original plans of becoming an elementary teacher. Since I have my bachelor's in this, is there a faster route to become a teacher?

Hi Toni! Just found your channel and subbed! I left the corporate world (I was an accountant lol) in Sept and hoping to get into Education. Right now I am also subbing (which I really like) but not sure how long I should sub for. I passed the Praxis II: Business Content a month ago but I haven't applied for my CE yet. I'm not sure if my SAT scores from High School will waive me from taking the basic Praxis exams (math, reading, & writing). Do you think I should go ahead and apply for my CE in hopes that my SAT scores will waive it? I feel like I'm procrastinating b/c I like substituting haha. TYSM for this video 🙂

I graduated from Wichita State a little over a year ago with a double major in management and marketing. With being unable to get a job in that field, I am now looking into teaching. Thought about getting my masters in special education. I’m just not sure where to start. Waiting to hear back from the special education department at Minnesota University to find out what I need to do since I do have two majors and 2 minors.

Hi Toni, thank for you this video! Do you have any recommendations on how to get your foot in the door without a personal connection to the school or teaching experience? I just got my temporary certification for middle school language arts, but I'm not sure how to best present myself in my application. Any tips on how to spin your resume or what to focus on in your cover letter? I have very little classroom experience, only a few weeks of substitute teaching and a college program where we taught for a few hours at a local school once per week. Thank you!

Hi! So I’m trying to figure out what would be best for me. I’m a pre-k auxiliary teacher right now, but I have to get some courses in child development. I started to go back to school and get a bachelors but it’s not the right time. I’m trying to figure out the best option for me.

If you have to do those courses but you feel as if it is not right for you…. Then guess what…. Sit down and think about what you truly want to do. Teaching is not work the weak. It is truly a unappreciated career.

Hey there!!! The first thing I did was create an account with Georgia Professional Standards Commission. Then I contacted them. Then I told them my situation and asked what steps I needed to follow to get certified in Georgia. I got all of my transcripts and forms sent over to them and I had to do an ethics exam

Hi Toni I have 4 years of teaching after-school and a bachelors degree in Fine Arts in NY. I looked at edTPA, but I don't think that's the right certification program for someone in my position. Do you know of any certification programs that can get one to start teaching asap? thanks!

Good evening, I’m starting substitute teaching this August. in hopes of getting hired next fall and having my own classroom. Question how can I work myself from substitute teaching to the school giving me a permanent teaching job next years. I graduate next May with my bachelors in elementary education I want to teach kindergarten. However I wanted to be hired before I graduate.

Hi, do you know of any around the GPA requirement for Bachelors degrees? I want to go into art teaching. I got my BFA in Fine Art in a major that was not my strongest subject, so I had below a 3.0, though most of the poor grades were due to harsh grading in a competitive art environment and not academically based. I was wondering if there are any ways to get a teaching certification with a Bachelors that does not require you to have had a certain GPA. Also, I'm considering maybe attempting to get the Masters in Teaching degree online through a program that does not offer a teaching license, as the online programs tend to be less restrictive when it comes to minimum undergrad GPAs. Then, once I have a higher GPA via my masters degree, go back and try to get the teaching certification at that point. Does that make sense as a potential avenue? Any help would be great, thank you.

I don’t know but what I do know is my gpa was not a 3.0 and I don’t think it was even close. They just checked my transcript to see if I graduated lol

Can you do a video on the way you became a teacher you briefly mentioned a principal hired you and then the board gave you time to pass praxis but anything else on that alternative way that you can break down ?

Hey there. As far as an alternative I truly can not think of one. That is exactly how it happened and how it happens in the state I was in. You have to be hired as a teacher then they review your transcripts. Once they review your transcripts then then tell you the options you have if you did not attend college for education. So I got hired as a business teacher. They reviewed my transcripts. They then told me I needed to take the praxis as well as take some additional courses to complete an education “program”. Once done with all of that I can then get my full license.

What state? California requires a person to have a BA and credentials to work as a teacher, and this is only the minimum requirements.

Can I be a teacher with only an associates degree? Will I be eligible for a teaching credential with an associates alone? Heyyyy there!!!! I had met the requirements for NC so when I wanted to get certified in GA I took a ethics exam and I became certified. I think GA has a GACE exam everyone must take if I’m not mistaken.

It’s funny, I am in NC as well and my degree is in Business, I also have a Masters in Adult Ed and Training,,,,as we speak I am studying fit the Business Ed praxis, plan on doing the test at the end of August,,I subscribe for those reasons,

I studied every day. I paid for a pretest on the website. I bought a book on Amazon. I also didn’t rush the process.

Thanks so much, girl! My friend and I are receiving bachelor's degrees in CSE and we're considering becoming high school STEM teachers. Do you think this might be any easier or harder for us, when compared with your schooling background? I'm guessing you're teaching elementary school, since you said you subbed at your kid's school.

I subbed at all levels. To be honest it depends on your district. Some districts are very hard to get into if you did not do student teaching and go to college to teach. You never truly know until you ask. You may want to reach out to a person at your district and see what the requirements are.

I contacted my local school district and they gave me their requirements. Which at that time was to take a course which was about $100 and then I went to the district hr and signed up.

Omgggg!!! Aggie!!! I teach a truck load of courses. Since I been a teacher I probably taught every business course. I love teaching business because I can relate real world experiences which keep the students engaged.

@@SittingPRETTY727 heyyyyyy there.... ok so.... I did have a book but I have no freaking clue on where it is or even what book it was. But I do remember I did pay for the study companion thing The Praxis site had available. The study companion was ok not perfect but worth the $20 bucks lol. When I was looking for jobs in Raleigh and Charlotte I looked in the whole CTE department. So I didn’t limit myself to just business. I was desperate lol. But I got lucky and found a job where I was subbing. The summer before I got hired I was applying for all of my surrounding areas and Raleigh as well as Charlotte.
