Finally, a UK interior designer on YT! Thank God! Please could you tell me, what software is most commonly used in UK for interior design (floor plans, elevations, rendering etc)? There are soooo many out there, and I'm planning on teaching myself since I'm too old to go to university (I already have a degree in graphic design, but int. des. is my first love), so it would really help to know what's the standard software. I am really gravitating toward SketchUp and Blender (they are free and the former at least looks really easy to learn based on what I've seen so far). What would you advise? Also, a practical Q given the world we live in. Is there any point for people to learn these softwares in this day and age, when you can pay £20-£60 to someone on Fiverr and get them to do a very good rendering very quickly? Is outsourcing the way to go now?
@SpaceForEdit
@SpaceForEdit 3 года назад
Hi Safi! Yaas to more UK designers on youtube :) I'll have to start with being quite straight forward- if you want to do interior design properly you will have to be prepared to put some spends aside for the software. It's like in any trade- you need your toolbox handy. I've not really got much experience with the free ones as I've always purchased mine or used my employers. But I do know that some residential designers do get away without software and like you said outsource for these things. Speaking about outsourcing- I really think its up to you. If you have the leverage in your budget then go for it! Especially the more technical drawings or photorealistic visuals. I do have a student in my SketchUp course who was outsourcing for her visuals but felt like explaining her concepts and going through revisions was just taking too much time. So she decided to level up her own skills and did my course. So it's really up to you ;) Regards the most common softwares used- AutoCAD for drawings, Sketchup for 3D and any kind of plug-in to get those photorealistic renders, Indesign and Photoshop for presentations. Hope this helps! Feel free to DM me on instagram if you want a chat ;) Happy to help!

Hi! I'm new in the UK and I'm searching about interior design, because I can't afford an University to study, is this true that you can be a self-taught interior designer? I'm thinking about going that way and I would like your opinion about it, since you're going the same way! Thank you :)

@@erica1596 Hi Sarah! So sorry it's taken me this long to reply! YT notifications are useless.. In case this is still something you're looking into- yes, it is do-able but you need to have a really good network of clients, suppliers and contractors. You also need to have experience. Designers are not made in a day, it takes a while to build up the skills.. So like I said- it is doable, education does not dictate everything but it is easier to get a job with a diploma and then you can go on to your own journey afterwards ;) Hope this helps!!! Best of luck!

Hi! Thank you for making this video. I’m almost 15 and I’ve been thinking about going into interior design for the past couple of years but you’ve really helped me decide that this is what I want to do. I do have a few questions though, how do you get into interior design and get started as early as possible? Do you have any tips on getting into the industry early? Also, what do you recommend studying at college that companies will be looking for in potential employees? I’m not really familiar with the industry as nobody I know have experience in creative fields so I’m not sure how it works haha but I hope you can help me! Thanks in advance.

Hey Ava! Ahh, that's fantastic! Wish you all the luck with your studies. If you can get any internships in design or any similar creative field that will definitely help later on after your studies. These days even just starting a design inspo Instagram account can come handy as it shows your style and passion 😊 Employees look for talent and personality. The skills and grades usually come after that. Work on expanding your portfolio and that will be a great starting point 😉👐

Oh hun, that's so far ahead, don't worry about that just yet. The education system could change so much in the upcoming years! With the online courses thriving in the current climate all is possible. If you want to look into it then the best way is to just google and research everything. When I applied to uni's in the UK, I literally went through a list of 100 best UK universities (at the time) and looked through the curriculum and student feedback for each design course. It was a long process :D

It really depends if the design companies in your area accept online certifications. I know that in most UK companies designer's need university degree. Hi mam', thank you so much for taking the time out to film us a super helpful and informative video. It's reassuring for sure. I wanted to ask about doing a 1 year Interior Design certificate as opposed to doing a degree. I already have a bachelors degree in International Business so I really don't want to do another one 😬 How much on average should a 1 year certificate in Interior Design cost? I'm seeing some for £700 vs 7000€ vs $1000. I don't want to get ripped off but at the same time, I don't want a 'cheap' certification especially as I want to specialise in commercial spaces. Hope you can help, Priscilla 💛
@SpaceForEdit
@SpaceForEdit 4 года назад
Hi Priscilla! No worries and thank you for taking the time to watch the video! To answer your question it really depends on the current situation in your country. If you are planning to start your own business then an online course or similar might work just fine but if you are planning to apply for jobs with already established design companies you might find it difficult. But it really depends. As far as I know it's even different in the UK and US so just do some research and see what's best 👍 Price wise- as long as the content covers a wide range of subjects that's what really matters.

Thanks for making this video! It’s valuable to hear the info from an interior designer based in the UK :) I’m interested to get in the field and eventually work as an interior designer. My bachelor degree is in not relevant to design or arts, and I am trying to self teach myself AutoCad and build a portfolio. Do you recommend that I should get a masters degree in interior design or if I can start off as design assistant/internship without a relevant degree?
@SpaceForEdit
@SpaceForEdit 2 года назад
This is a tough one as unfortunately most companies in the UK (I'm assuming you're based in the UK?) are still holding on to the official papers and when you'll enter the field most of your competition will have a degree and maybe even previous experience in design.. In my opinion masters in interior design is a waste of time.. but thats only my opinion. I think I'm going to make a full video on this topic soon as it does come up quite often. Thank you so much for stopping by and watching my content! Hope this answer is somewhat useful!
