WOOOOOOOW ,you made this video just in time.I was first considering becoming a cardiologist then gyno then radiologist or going into diagnostic imaging.I always wanted to do something in the medical where I knew for certain i could help someone to the best of my ability but didnt know what to specialize.That was until I learnt of OT and PT then I became sure THIS IS WHAT I NEED TO DO.A video I saw years ago of a young boy learning to walk with a prosthetic leghad resurfaced and it touched my heart seeing him giving it all to learn to walk and I also kept thinking of the people who were there to help him overcome this issue.Thank God I found you and thank you for making these videos.

@nekoleamber

One of my really good friends is SO very shy, and is also an OT. In fact, if you watch the video "Therapeutic Outdoor Play| Timbernook" she is in the video with me. It seems as though when you are doing something you love and are passionate about, it is easier to overcome that shy-ness and you naturally start to blossom. I definitely wouldn't worry too much about it. There are so many different types of OTs, I'm sure you would make a fantastic one. :)

Hi! Thank you so much for this video. I have been recently considering studying to become an OT. I also have a degree in Communications (Advertising, 2012) and have been working in a mix of hospitality/management and sales since then. I want to help people and do something that is rewarding. Find my "Ikigai!" So your video really inspired me :) I was actually looking into becoming a PT, and my good friend who is a social worker recommended I look into OT and I'm sucked in. I will have to take the prerequisites at my local community college but the OT coursework looks both far more interesting and far more "up my alley" than PT which I can imagine will translate to a better fit professionally, too. I'm in FL so will ideally be looking for a program around here, as my fiance works here full time. I think the prereqs are pretty similar to what you mentioned. How did you go about connecting with an OT for your volunteer hours? Other than beginning the prereqs at community college and studying for the GRE - the obvious steps - I'm a little stuck on where to start!
@julielewis4710
@julielewis4710 5 лет назад
I really identify with your story - I also have a degree in comms and have been working in advertising! Thinking about OT as an option for a career change that feels fulfilling and the right fit for me. Did you get an answer to the OT volunteer hour question? Where are you in the journey?
@oxdeekofskyxo
@oxdeekofskyxo 5 лет назад
Julie Lewis hey Julie! I’m pleased to say I have begun my journey :) I am currently taking prerequisites at my local community college and should have them fulfilled, in addition to GRE done and observation hours, in time to apply in January for a program next fall. I would not be able to get everything ready so quickly if I were working FT, but I’ve dropped down to about 20 hours a week (nights, at a restaurant) to accomplish all of this. Most traditional advice I found for finding observation hours suggests cold-calling or dropping in to local institutions with OTs and just asking- schools, hospitals, rehabs etc. However, I used the AOTA website and found a Facebook group for my local chapter. This was an incredible resource! I posted on the group and there were several OTs happy to help. I’m currently completing some hours in two diverse settings- one with early childhood and the other general population. Good luck and let me know how it goes!

What would you have to get a Bachelor degree in? You said that you completed your first degree in Communications and that didn't qualify for becoming an OT student so you had to start from scratch so what did you have to do then?
@nekoleamber
@nekoleamber 6 лет назад
What I meant to say is that I hadn't completed any of the required pre-requisite courses (with the exception of statistics) because my undergraduate major was unrelated. If you are a psychology major or choose a major related to health, chances are you will have taken at least some of the required pre-requisite courses giving you a bit of a head start. :) It doesn't matter what undergraduate degree you have, so long as it is from an accredited college.

I asked this question earlier and the answer I got was no, but yes? Im graduating with a degree in psychology, but im taking the prerequisite classes for my SJSU program. If I was you, I would find an OT program, and look around for opportunities to shadow. If you really want to go the OTA to OT route, find a bridge program. Otherwise, you have a bachelors, and it would be costly to do a complete OTA program and then a whole different OT program if it wasn't bridged. (meaning your units would not count and you would be paying two different bills)
@lkeyonna45

Hi Blanca! I'm sure you will make a fantastic OT. Looks like you will have a nice head start with an associates in psychology in terms of the required pre-reqs! Thats is awesome. Definitely make an appointment with a college counselor. They should be able to offer you literature on the OT schools you are interested in and the requirements, etc. That should help you narrow your choices. I would also suggest looking into shadowing OTs in your area when you have some time. You can call local hospitals, pediatric outpatient clinics, hand clinics, etc. This will give you a nice idea of what to expect. Hope that helps!! Best of luck to you. :)

I've been going back and forth with deciding if I want to get my masters to become an OTR. I know I have some time to think about that because when I graudate in May, I still have to return to complete my bachelors. Do you think you could do a video on your view of a COTA and OTR, how their days differ, what you think would make someone want to continue on to become an OTR, and maybe even pay differences? @nekoleamber
@nekoleamber 6 лет назад
Hey Elizabeth! So cool connecting with a fellow Toro! Paul is the man!! :) What a fascinating story you have. As far as tips go: if you have an idea of places you might be interested in working or checking out, give the facility a call and see if they allow prospective students to volunteer/shadow. That is what I did. I called my local hospital and it was relatively easy to set up. If you are in the LA area, this should be even easier as (im sure you know) the two main OT schools are located in LA and you're certainly not the first person to inquire about volunteering. Letters of recommendation and GPA recommendations i mention in the video but 3.0 is a the minimum GPA to be considered. I didn't do so hot on the GRE so I can't speak to that haha. But with that being said, it's about the entire picture, not just any one area. So if you shine in other areas to make up for a not so great one, they certainly will take that into consideration. Best of luck to you!!

Thank you!
@nekoleamber
@nekoleamber 6 лет назад
Hi Jocelyne! Congrats on almost being done with college! I say you should go for it!! Generally, colleges tend to look at all aspects that make up the applicant, instead of overly focusing on any one area. If you have an overall high GPA and get stellar letters of recommendations in combination with high GRE scores, you look pretty good on paper. Some colleges will even interview you. So there are plenty of opportunities to show that you are a qualified OTS candidate. :) Good luck to you!!

I have looked into recruitment agencies who walk you through the process such as MEDPRO and Conexus, but they seem to only recruit nurses. I need a recruiter who can help with sourcing the OT job in my area of specialism, apartment, car rental, visa/ permits/ any pre exams I would need to take for AOTA.. etc.. Do you have any advice please? Or know of anyone who has relocated (even for 12 months) from the U.K. to the states to work?

I'm so curious about this career but so confused about schooling! Every masters program I look at requires a bachelors in a related field plus many medical course prerequisites yet the school's don't offer the related bachelors degree? I have to start over because I don't think my Bachelor's in English Literature will cut it haha.

Hope everyone is have a good day just want you all to know Jesus loves you ❤️ you are never alone even when you feel lonely. Jesus is amazing John 3:16 “ For God so loved the world that he sent his one and only son that whoever shall believe in him shall not perish but have eternal life” I you do believe it’s best to find a local church that believes Jesus as Lord and has died for our sins and rose again and now sits at the right hand of the throne and attend it and also repent meaning turn away from your sins and confess them to Jesus sounds hard but God will make a way. Also read the Bible and talk to Jesus start by saying abba father... of course we’re not going to be perfect but we believe in the one who is perfect

Hi! I’m in a similar boat. Earned a BS in Biology years back and am unhappy with my sales job. I have a few of the prerequisite courses completed from my college days, but need to take a couple more and get my volunteer hours. My question is about the GPA required. I spent my first 2 years of college in a major I hated, and it wreaked havoc on my overall GPA. Will this be a big factor? After I changed to biology I maintained a 3.26 overall.

Hi, I have 2 question. Do I need an occupational therapy licence when working or is the degree good enough when looking for a job. My other question is can I just go back to a community college and get a certificate in occupational therapy if I allready have a BA or do I need to go back to the university. Reason I said that is because college classes can b cheaper.

I’ve been studying for my major in childhood education but I feel like I’d be better as an OT, but never really knew that was a job until starting my Education classes. Thanks for the video!

So how many years does it take all together if you enter college immediately to become an occupational therapist? Some people say 4 years and others say 6.

Omg hi!! I’m an EXSS major and I suddenly switched for shooting for a physician assistant to OT for my career path. I just feel that I belong in the OT field and I’m so thankful I came across your channel! I’m currently a senior and was wondering if I should try to work as an OTA before going to/applying to OT school? If you have any advice, I’d highly appreciate it 😭❤️ im first American generation, so I’ve done everything by myself and it’s been rough not having a guide.

Hi there! I’m a little confused about the route I should take with what I have already regarding my degrees. I have a BA in Spanish and now I’m interested in furthering a career in OT. Would I have to do over my bachelors degree? Or are there courses I can take that are equivalent to a degree? Not sure what to do.

Thank you so much for this video! Dominguez Hills is one of the schools I will be applying to, but I am wondering how you completed your medical terminology course. My University doesn't offer that course. Is there any suggestion on where I can complete it?

Could you re-take those 6 core classes and raise your GPA? I have taken about 3 of those and i want to get them to B’s instead of C’s but i am not sure is CSUDH would accept that. Thank you!

Fernando Roman Jr Hey, future OT!!! You can always re-take em...I actually suggest you do so you’re not “GPA chopped”. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact OT Genius. We are here to help and dedicated to helping Pre-OTs get into OT school. :)

Nas Harm You really can major in anything. There really is no “required” major...majoring in Psychology, recreational therapy, and even Kineseology seem to be pretty popular...My biggest recommendation is to consider your passions...This will allow you to succeed in any major you decide on. Here is a video on my top 5 “non traditional” majors. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--hQ2dbVlrAI.html

Nekole, I love your videos! Your honesty and passion for the profession and helping others is inspiring! 💗 I have a question: Does anyone have any information on international contracts? I am interested in working in Italy as an occupational therapist, but I haven't been able to find any information about this online.

How did you get your volunteer hours under an OT professional for your application? Thanks
@nekoleamber
@nekoleamber 6 лет назад
I contacted a couple of local hospitals (it can be any facility with a licensed OT, but I wanted to see the hospital setting) and asked if they accept prospective OT students for volunteer/shadowing. It was a relatively easy process, and most facilities are familiar with this process. :)

Hi! I just found this video. I've just completed my pre-requisites for OT. How did you approach studying for the GRE?
@nekoleamber
@nekoleamber 5 лет назад
Ingrid Sam I didn’t do that great on the GRE so I may not be the best person to ask but I used practice workbooks and flash cards that were designed for the GRE. They also offer classes to help prep, but I didn’t not take them. Best of luck!
