Hi. I am a 3rd year OT student and I struggle with imposter syndrome. I feel that I am a slower learner and I am more introverted, but most of my classmates are outgoing and faster learners... sometimes it discourages me. I want to do OT, it's hard too when I have anxiety and I just wish I believed in myself more. With that said, I really loved how you said OTs help people live more meaningful lives... main reason I chose OT!
@otfocus
@otfocus Год назад
Hey you're not alone. I'm also an introvert and really struggled to put out these videos at first. You can be a great OT and still be introverted. Some of my patients actually prefer it. In my experience, introverts are usually more patient and take the time to listen. There's a truth that actions speak louder than words.

Hey, I’m also staring OT in September this year and I’m quite introverted (very quiet/reserved in groups) and I’m really worried this will hold me back as I’m not really bubbly and outgoing and confident

@snowlily5540 Hey, I've learned that the most important thing no matter what career you choose is to always stay true to yourself, even if everyone else seems to be more outgoing or bubbly! What truly matters is if you are happy. It is a struggle, but I believe you can do it 💪 ✨️like I said everyone doesn't seem like me a lot in my program and sometimes it bothers me, but try to imagine yourself getting this degree without anyone else involved. Do it for yourself and not others opinions !

Thank you for your insight! I'm considering OT as a future career but not very sure as to what sectors, but insightful never the less. One thing to add, if you've worked on the mental health aspects of OT, i'd be very happy to see a video regarding it and your thoughts and possibly OT school! Thanks a bunch!

I'll do my best! Mental health is so different from rehab or acute care. It's more focused on meaningful activities and getting patients to engage socially. It can be rewarding but it's definitely for people interested in that field.

Great video, man! OT is a job. Just like many others. I feel that a lot of people who go into the field romanticize the career, and then they’re faced with all of the things not taught in school.

Hey, I hope everything is well. just watching your video because im thinking on persuing OT, on your second con, you are talking about potential injury while holding or lifting a patient. There is a solution for that, and that is workout. by strengthening your body and becoming stronger it will carry on into your career. and avoid injury.
@otfocus
@otfocus Год назад
Thanks for the advice Rafael. You're totally right. This is the type of job where you need to stay physically fit, but the problem usually happens when your bending and lifting. This is where most injuries happen in rehab. If you do hand therapy you can actually injury yourself massaging scar tissue. This can cause muscle fatigue, strain, and worsening arthritis as the years go on. Thanks for the comment!

I would add as a con that there is not a very clear path to advancement in OT except for administration, but many other careers such as nursing allow for more advancement.

That’s so true. Most OTs don’t even have an opportunity to advance their career, while any nurse can become a nurse practitioner or other administration role.
@davidproctor5055
@davidproctor5055 2 года назад
@@otfocus That being said, I would never want to be a nurse, it's a stressful career, but it's important to know for people who are considering the OT profession, that your salary will quickly top out, and anything above a certain level will require starting your own business, administration, or something outside the normal role of an everyday OT.

@otfocus
@otfocus Год назад
Sorry you’re feeling that way. Besides giving up on the profession, is there something you think you could do differently that could help. For me, it’s been helpful to focus more on helping others feeling feel understood rather than focusing on the intervention and or just making the intervention more client centered. Then there are other patients that just don’t progress and it’s not your fault…You may have an impact that won’t be noticed until years later.

I'm an aspiring OTA. Is a pediatric setting seen in a good or bad light versus other settings? Is it more stressful? Are you more likely to work nights and weekends or bring work home with you?
@otfocus
@otfocus Год назад
As an OT or OTA you often don’t get the respect of PT and most people don’t know what you do and that can be frustrating. You don’t have to work nights or take your work home unless you work in Homehealth. Sometimes you have to work weekends unless you work in outpatient or Homehealth. Most hospital or rehabs want you to work at least on weekend or weekend day per month. Hope that helps!

I have never understood how anyone would want to do this job. Years ago, I was going to receive training, and I could apply to the PTA assistant program or the nursing program. I picked nursing. Even 25 years ago, I couldn't see the appeal, and now that I have had to have PT and OT, I see the appeal even less, unless you are a sadist who likes laughing at people, which I doubt you are. Regardless, I will say that even a year later, I still hear my OT's voice when I'm doing something stupid that could result in a fall. She taught me a lot about how to safely to my ADL's after a stroke, so I'm very grateful.

As a retired respiratory therapist, I know how some (many) patients are unmotivated to cooperate so that they can get better. It can be disheartening, but if you take the approach that you are offering a SERVICE, and whether or not they want to get the most from that service, is entirely up to the patient. Like the saying goes, "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink."

Sorry folks.I was what would be considered a super star OT student, worked at some of the best facilities. It is not the time to become an OT. I would stop my child from going into the field. PTs and SLPs are all trying to do occupations now. They don’t give a shit that there’s an OT on the team. I think AOTA is moot on what to do about this. It is so depressing to be in a field for decades to not Feel more respected but more disrespected and cast aside. Thanks to all my SLP and PT friends. Look up PTs optimal theory. Which is basically telling therapists to work on meaningful activities to engage patients. The future is not for the weak hearted. I’m unfortunately just exasperated.
@otfocus
@otfocus Год назад
I actually think it’s great that PT and Speech are doing more occupations. It just shows how important occupations are in the course of rehabilitation. The field can be depressing at the times and that’s why OTs need to discover ways to make the field more meaningful in practice.

@otfocus Год назад
I think I see where you're coming from. The career is great on paper and it has the potential to be way better than it actually is in the real world, and I think that's why it's so great. Incorporating people's hobbies and interests as therapy is genius. Yet no one does it, and that's why it's a disaster. In general, most jobs are dull, but the key is to question what's going wrong and become curious about how to make it right.
