For anyone willing to go for a research career in India should be very wary about choosing their guide as that is a make or break. As already explained in the video your further career is dependent largely on your contacts and your guide's disposition towards you. Secondly, interdisciplinary degrees are best avoided as you would become ineligible for a lot of posts. I know of someone who did PhD from IIT Bombay CS department originally being from civil department. He later on enrolled for a second PhD from NIT Durgapur Civil dept. I am an Mtech from NIT Durgapur and had a few offers for PhD but decided against it. Some of my friends who are doing PhD from IIT Roorkee, IIT KGP etc. are frustrated because of the lack of help from their guides and the general disconnect between industry and research in India. Don't blindly go after the tag and instead take a well informed decision. Although a number of new NITs and IITs have come up such recruitment happens on the basis of contacts. My personal opinion, if you are bent on going into research try for foreign universities. In Indian institutes if your guide isn't supportive your PhD will become a hell.
Sir try to bring someone who can describe the differences between phd in usa/India vs phd in Europe ( not in terms of scholarship amount.) . Like sponsored project phd, or independent research, why the phd durations are different, future prospects n all. Thank you. You r doing a great work👍

New subscriber here. Your content is amazing! Could you please also interview MTech/MS Biotechnology students from IITs/NITs and enquire about placements and industry positions? It'll be really beneficial for Biotech graduates who are utterly clueless as the field has very limited job prospects.
My sister just got selected(dec 2023)in nit calicutt as assistant professor(6000 gp) after Doing her btech from uptu, mtech from nit hamirpur and Phd from nit hamirpur (4 yrs) in 2022 and 1 yr teaching experience on contract from nit hamirpur itself. Even without tag of iit's (in Phd) one can get jobs in nit's and iit's
bhaiya I have a request. Please make dedicated videos on journals, conferences, impact factor and all aspects of good publication. What is meaning of Scopus indexed, process of review, how to know which are good journals etc. This information is very difficult to find. Maine abhi IIT Kgp m Phd join kia h still I don't know a lot and kisi se pucho toh clearly nhi batate h
1. Do a Ph.d from IIT, with atleast a couple of relevant and good publications 2. Be thorough with u r ph.d work 3. A couple of years post doc in western universities with a good publication 4. Reference letters from IIT professors (guide) and post doc professor 5. Age less than 35 6. Continuity in educational qualification UG to Ph.d and PDF 7. GATE qualification would be an added advantage.
I think there is a withdrawal of need for Phd of the Asst Professor for Life sciences./Pure sciences .. Guess NET is sufficient. But the advancement would be slow i suppose.
Sir meri sister ne water resources engineering mtech kiya h iit Guwahati se but core uska agriculture engineering tha or abi PhD kr rhi h ...to kya wo assistant professor k liye eligible hogi
Sir, I've been allotted M.Tech in Manufacturing Technology in NIT Trichy which is under Production Engineering department. NIT Trichy only have M.Tech in Thermal Power and Industrial Safety Engineering from Mechanical Engineering department. Since I have done my B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering, what are the problems that may arise if I change department in Master's from Mechanical to Production dept.
Sir, PhD complete hone ke baad Post Doc. Ke jagah agar mera 3 years ka Industrial Experience hota hai to phir Usko hum Post PhD Professional Experience bol sakte hai? Please Suggest.
@ed sharpener Please do not give out misinformation about expected 'qualifications' to get asst professor post in IITs. 1. Your research competence is of foremost importance. 2. Research pedigree is a double edged sword. It will backfire, if you were not an important part of your pedigree research group. 3. Let your research work become your calling card, not your contacts. (The number of people who know me through research is many times more than the size of my contacts). 4. This one you missed. "Be in constant touch and collaboration with those who you intend to put in as your references". 5. Do not take your references/contacts for granted. Particularly, if they can be part of the interview panel.
Hello Janardhanan Sivaramakrishnan, Well I am not a faculty in any of the premier institutes. This was an attempt to convey some answers about FAQs, which I researched about and asked around about. I can agree that I/you might not be 100% objectively correct, but intention isnt to propagate false information. and I believe this is true for you too! So of course once again, thank you so much for adding value to the viewers! I appreciate it!
@@EdSharpener The reason that I made my comment is that we have literally shredded to bits candidates with 'pedigree' (read MIT or CalTech type) during interviews, when we found that the candidate did not have much individual contribution. We have even seen candidates flunk interviews because they thought that their contacts/referees in the interview panel would be of an advantage regardless of how they display their aptitude in the interview. Unfortunately, the perspective available to senior PhD,or Post-docs is insufficient in this effect.
Dear sir, please try to clarify my doubt, Currently I am pursuing Phd and I have 5 Journal and 2 SCOPUS indexed publications. Problem is I have only 6.27 CGPA in Btech which means I dont have a 1st class. But in Mtech I have CGPA of 9.34. In future, can this become a problem (Not having 1st class in Btech) for applying for the post of assistant professor in NITs or in other deemed to be universities. I came to know that PhD+ 1st class in preceding degrees is essential for the post of assistant professor in NIT. Kindly give me a reply
Hi Debashis. Is it mandatory to have first class in masters degree for asst prof (general science) recruit in IITs? Even if the candidate has phd and requisite post phd experience? IITs ask for PhD with first class in preceding degree. Do they relax for specific cases?
Hello brother, I have done my M.Tech and PhD from NIT Rourkela with 3 IEEE Transactions and multiple good International conferences. My M.Tech cgpa is 8.05 and PhD course work cgpa is 8.5. At present I am doing my Postdoc at IIT Patna .. in my Class 10 and 12 my % is 84% and 70% respectively from state board. But in my B.Tech (from state government Engineering college) my overall % is 59.88% ( i.e. 5 marks lesser than 60% ) . Can you please tell me what are my chances of getting selected for the post of assistant professor in IITs, IIITs, NITs, Central or State universities etc...I am very worried because most of the cases they want first class in all degrees.
Sir, Please clear or slove my doubts if you have knowledge about this matter. As i am not Btech holder in Chemical engineering stream but I did Bsc in (PCB)+ Msc( in Chemistry)+ Mtech Chemical engineering ( from Nit Jaipur) as after that whether i should go for phd in chemical engineer or not. Let us suppose if I complete phd (from good nit or iit) in chemical engineering after phd can I eligible for assistant professor in nit/iit from this qualification.
Now thats totally a matter of Colleges. Colleges do have the right to recruit the taskforce they want. Well if you are a PhD, you get chances all across india
Sir, what is the age limit to become an assistant professor in NIT/IIT/Govt. eng colleges? I will complete my M.Tech by next year and I will be 29 of age. Will it be wise for me to go for PhD ?
Try to get publications in top journals. Finish your PhD in less than 5 years. DO NOT wait for a completing a post-doc before applying for faculty position. Apply as soon as you defend PhD.
Sir I did my btech from NIT BHOPAL, and pursuing M.Tech from IIT-BOMBAY. I am thinking to convert my mtech to phd. If i get pmrf , should i go for it. Phd ke turant bad ass.prof ban sakte h kya
It certainly helps. And with the competition we get, it becomes a tad bit difficult to secure such positions without getting into reputed institutes in PhD at least
@@EdSharpener ok thank you so much bhaiya.... I am taking ece in tier-2 clg.... Please tell me some tips to follow from 1st yr so that I can crack gate exam with good marks
Bhaiya i got IIT Roorkee Alternate hydro energy system. And my b. Tech Branch was instrumentation engineer. Should I take Or not? I have already got control system at NIT kurukshetra..... Kon sa lena chahiye bhaiya plz help me🙏🙏
Hello sir, I have done my master's from Malaysia and currently doing Ph.D. from the same college from Malaysia. So I have not given the GATE exam. I am from the electrical background. Is I am still eligible for teaching jobs in IIT/NITs or do I have to give the GATE exam ?. I have SCI/SCOPUS indexed journal papers.
Hi, yes... you absolutely can! As you move upward in higher education, the boundaries between different streams blur more and more... So, what you are asking is possible. Just try to be your best!
not really an age limit, but if you are around 40 then it might not be as attractive for the panel as a 32-35 year old candidate in terms of your future calibre
What should be the min percentage/cgpa in m.tech for phd from iit or any other good institute..is it merit based or eligibility criteria based..plss tell me..sir..?
@@EdSharpener yes sir i know it is the same for all but mechanical ko ignore kar deta ha saab , i am a masters student in tool engg. Want to study phd please guide what will be the best thing to do and from where becz i dont want to do it from India becz covid ke vajah se quality of education itnii zada kharaab ho gai ha ke bus vaisey not juat becz of covid pahle se bhe kharaab the but aab to aur bhe zada ho gai ha
Very low chances because already the competition is huge which shows PhDs through premier institutes. But if your research is gold, who is going to stop you?
Sir I need an advice from you sir, how to contact you Asap sir?? This is regarding my mtech admission which I have to give my decision before 3pm tomorrow Please help me sir
Sir , I've prepared gate for approximately 4..5 months of ME and Ive given my attempt and got 644 score which is an average score . And I aspired to prepare for ese after studying for gate and prepared for just 2months due to bad family situations and got 205..210 Mark's According to Made easy key. Sir all this info i intend to give is that I have desire to work hard In mean while I had very less knowledge about coap Colleges courses etc and I'v eapplied for less collges My plan was to go any tier 2 IIT only to prepare for ese gate again and get a job Govt. But now I feel mtech is also equally important which can work as Plan B for me (Phd or other strictly sticking on to core of mechanical) Sir my doubt is I've got IIT bhubaneswar via spot round today in Manufacturing engineering I am in dilemma to take a decision Whether to take this offer and continue to manage preparation for ese gate Or leave this and sit and prepare for full on gate and ese target for job In psu or any grand IITs Seniors or IIT bhubaneswar say placements are not so good Plse guide me through this sir
