What am I missing here? I walk into a store, look at the merchandise I'm interested in, choose what I'd like to buy, and tell the associate. I HATE an associate who follows me around while I'm making up my mind -- what do I need them for, but to take my payment?
Used to work at the Ralph Lauren Mens store on Madison Avenue in NYC a few years ago. There were high net worth clients (old money, multi-millionaires and new money billionaires) that came in all the time casually dressed in jeans and a T-shirts dropping their Amex Black Card or writing a check for several pieces of expensive items or custom suits. They had nice sneakers on but trying to do the "shoe test" some luxury retail workers do with people doesn't always work.... The founder of Kinkos, Paul Orfalea, came in one day to get some jeans and button down shirts. He was dressed in some old jeans, LL Bean sneakers and a sweater (very nice guy btw) Sometimes the customers who were dressed in designer clothes, looked "rich" and acted like a charicture of the wealthy were actually in debt, faking it and putting on a show for other customers and associates (no one cares honestly). While some of the actual wealthy people were down to earth, casually dressed and you wouldn't know they were wealthy.
The vendeuses at the luxury boutiques in Paris, especially Rue Cambon, are all so happy that I chose to visit. I was in jeans and tee shirt! They encouraged me to admire the products by looking at the luxury and construction of said products. I couldn’t afford much but was treated the same as I would have had a wad to spend. America is where the sales people are assholes. They work in a shop so they should drop the attitude.
While designer bags and accessories may be beautiful and expensive, boutiques are a fake world where mostly middle class customers try their best to impress shop workers in order to fill an internal need for validation. I have come to a point where I find it all very boring and quite frankly sad.
I love your channel but you are so wrong here. I act the same at Dior as I do at McDonals. I’m nice and polite. I’ve never had a bad experience. The first time I ever went to Dior I said straight away I wouldn’t be buying anything, I was new to luxury, and I love Dior. I asked if she wouldn’t mind showing me some bags as I’ve never seen a Dior bag up close. She showed me heaps of bags. It was wonderful. A few months later I went back and bought a bag from her. Shopping luxury is no different than shopping at TJ Maxx.
YOU REALLY HAVE TO HAVE LOW SELF-ESTEEM TO LET ANY RETAILER PUT YOU THROUGH THAT, BEGGING THEM TO TAKE YOUR MONEY! I WENT TO SAKS TO LOOK AT CHANELS, AND WAS TREATED VERY NICELY, AND I WENT THERE CASUALLY DRESSED. SO, MAYBE THAT'S WHERE YOU NEED TO SHOP

Who said anything about old money? She is talking about getting help in a store. Sales associates make a living on sales regardless of who is buying so if you seem to have adequate funds or someone accustomed to designer purchases, they will go to you to make a sale period. Not every designer store is Hermes lol

Every person shopping at a luxury store isn’t old money. Old money is literally 1% of the worlds population. Plus she said well dressed not label dressed. Your strange attitude of not listening and reacting off of that just highlights that she was right about a lot of SA’s at luxury stores. 😅
there are no rules. you are the customer. you have the money. you SHOULD CHOOSE to be polite. but no, there are no rules and any company stupid enough to treat CUSTOMERS rudely based on these nonsensical rules does not deserve your money.
Normal people have all the typical problems that allow them to actively avoid this stuff. Rich people get bored and need to create problems for themselves to solve. These games serve a valuable purpose, but just not for you and me. Continuing to knock on and on about the inequality of it all is getting stale, smacks of pettiness, as the middle class gets priced out because rich people enjoy this 💩.
I walked into a Gucci dressed in jeans, boots and a parka and was treated like gold. I ended up buying a bag. Another time at Cartier I was dressed quite nicely. I felt like I had a “Robber” sign across my chest. I was shadowed everywhere I went but no one offered to assist me. So Neiman Marcus got my money that time. And they were fantastic.
I wonder what you are talking about. This is all very much in your head. What exactly do you mean with "being treated badly"? I prefer sales staff that leaves me alone after a polite greeting. If I need assistance, I'll ask them. As for the outer appearance: Of course a person that shows no self-respect is usually less respected by others. But showing self respect and confidence doesn't mean you need to wear expensive designer stuff. Jeans and T-shirt is fine, just don't look unkempt and sloppy.
Truth be told it’s about how you carry yourself. If you feel you don’t fit in there, you won’t. I get treated like royalty everywhere I shop and a friend of mine gets treated like garbage. The difference? How we carry ourselves. I walk in confidently, make eye contact with the SAs, smile, go about my business. They flock to me like flies to honey. I watched a friend of mine, she is wearing dirty gym clothes, hair disheveled, not making eye contact, appearing uncomfortable… and the ladies only talk to her if she has a question. In my experience treat the SAs like people, not sharks, and you should have no problem. Again, you fit in if you think you fit in.
I like your channel but on this I think you are over reacting. First of all, stores are not museums or charities; they are there for one purpose: to sell you something. So obviously they will not care or value you for who you are, they are not your friends. And I think it is not really good for your mental health to expect a store to like you for who you are. They are there to sell you items nothing more. I think it is your expectation that is bizarre here not the stores attitudes. They are just acting according to their purpose of existance whereas you are projecting what one would expect from ones family and friends to a commercial establishment. I think seeking validation from a store to be liked as who you are is a bit odd wouldn't you agree? It's pointless. If they treat you badly, do not go. SAs do not have to serve to window shoppers, sorry, they are there to make a sale. They are not museum guides. If you want to window shop go to a department store like Selfridges or Harrods, I think it is very unkind and ill bread to take up a SAs time just to window shop. When I lived in London I would walk to Harrods in the mornings in my athleisure and would get treated the same if I wanted to buy something. And if I didn't I wouldn't take up anybody's time by asking to see and touch things. Simple as that, it's basic respect to people working there. I like your videos but this one, I found your attitude very entitled.
I think it is for the price tag these luxury brands are taking, people get suddenly other expectations. People want to feel better, special and with more friendlyness than the average retail store boutique employees.
Ok so I used live in NYC PRE pandemic and I used to go into ALL the luxury stores dressed Classic, Flamboyant, Casual, all different types of ways lol but always stylish and I would just be nice, talk to the SAs about the brand and look at items I was interested in. Confidence is key here, 8/9 times out of 10 they'd offer me champagne and/or water/coffee. (Without even asking) I feel like I just gave off a stong, confident ,fun , nice aura, and people genuinely enjoyed my personality. I can't speak to it as much today, but i feel like this goes both ways. You gotta find an SA That vibes with your own personality, and I feel like you'll get the best treatment. ❤🫶🏻
