What's the highest reed that can be bent? I find once you go above G6 it gets really to tough to bend notes and above B6 almost impossible. I noticed your tuning goes up to key of D as the highest key I assume for this reason. The lowest key harp I have played is Low D and I can bend all the notes on that harp but I assume that it's harder to bend the low notes on lower octave harps though I haven't had the opportunity to try yet.
@willharmonicawilde
@willharmonicawilde 5 лет назад
I'm not sure. The highest "draw bendable" note I have is on another custom tuning I made where hole 10 has a D7 blow reed and an E7 draw reed (the same relationship as Hole 4 on a D harp, but two octaves higher). I can still bend the E down to an Eb no problem- It's probably higher than you would want to use in a song though, way above guitar register.
@thBrilliantFool
@thBrilliantFool 5 лет назад
@@willharmonicawilde would the E7 draw reed be more or less difficult to bend if the blow reed was Db7 or C7 instead of D7?
@willharmonicawilde
@willharmonicawilde 5 лет назад
@@thBrilliantFool If the blow note was lowered to C7 then the draw note (E7) would be able to bend right down to a Db. It shouldn't be any more difficult bending it all the way down but you would probably find it difficult to get good intonation on the Eb and D bends in between.

... I'm playing with a guitarist at open C, so 2nd position F harp.. quite difficult to bend the upper noted... 😟

So it is possible to draw bend on holes 7-10? I’m a bit confused on this. Unless the tuning has to be a certain way? I’m pretty much a beginner but boy I have a lot to learn.

@willharmonicawilde

On standard tuning only the draw notes in holes 1 to 6 bend (and only the blow notes in holes 7 to 10). On Wilde Tuning, all of the draw notes bend, but there are no blow bends.

I have a problem with 9 draw bend. There's a buzz when bending and nothing works to get rid of it😢

When I draw bend 9 hole draw on my Bb, it squeaks if I try to sustain the note. And the 10 hole draw bend requires a lot of air on Seydel session steel. Help?
@willharmonicawilde
@willharmonicawilde 5 лет назад
Is it a Wilde-Tuned harmonica?
@suyashkumar1927
@suyashkumar1927 5 лет назад
Yup. I love the tuning and scale possibilities, but being unable to sustain that whole step bend on 9th and 10th hole is really bothering me.

@@willharmonicawilde Update. The rattling/ high pitched squeal caused while bending the 9 hole draw is fixed by adding weight to the base of the draw reed. I used glue stick material and it got fixed. Now, I can sustain the bends without that high pitched squeal. Putting this out there for anyone who starts facing a similiar problem :)

Do you use the 7 draw full step and 1 and a half step bends a lot?
@willharmonicawilde
@willharmonicawilde 2 года назад
I assume you are talking about Wilde tuning because 7 draw doesn't bend on a standard harp. I use the 7 whole step all the time on my tuning, it's the major 2nd in second position, so a pretty common note. The step and a half bend is the flat 2, so used less often in 2nd position (only really over the five chord, or when I'm playing in 3rd position) It's the flat 5 in 3rd position.

Hey Will ! I have a question : at around 8:10 (on your A harp), I can hear some slight "hissing", similar to what happens when you're about to hit an overblow but aren't quite there yet. Is it something normal on Wilde tuned harps ? I'm asking this because I just bought a wilde session steel in the key of A and have that problem on draw 6 to 10... but apart from the hissing sound, my bends are in tune and I don't feel like I'm struggling to play them (except 10 draw which I'm still struggling with). I thought it was just my technique that wasn't right, but hearing this happening to you too, I'm not sure anymore ^^"
@willharmonicawilde
@willharmonicawilde 2 года назад
Yes this tends to be thing with really high draw bends, I find you can iron it out by adjusting intensity of the breath, or adding vibrato.

Do you know how to bend overblows? And how do I do a hole one overblow
@willharmonicawilde
@willharmonicawilde 4 года назад
Hi yes, i have a youtube lesson on overblows. The hole 1 overblow is the most difficult, you will need to set the harp up for it.
@yuridanylko

@@willharmonicawilde How do I modify my harp for overblow, overdraws etc. Also can modifications fix high draw notes being low volume and squeaky?
@willharmonicawilde
@willharmonicawilde 4 года назад
There are a few things you can do, but adjusting the reed gaps/ offseta is the most important thing. There is plenty of information online about this. I haven't heard you play but the problem you are experiencing with your high draw notes is most likely down to your technique rather than the harp. Draw notes 7-10 are much less forgiving to poor technique than holes 1 to 6. Make sure you are 'drawing' the air in gently from the diaphragm and not "sucking" it in using the muscles in your mouth and neck.
@yuridanylko
@yuridanylko 4 года назад
@@willharmonicawilde I am drawing as gently as possible. But if I go any more gently no sound comes out at all. I have also been playing for 5 years so I can't imagine it being the problem.
