John from www.growingyourgreens.com/ shares with you how to best grow, harvest, dry and profit from Moringa oleifera in your backyard. In this episode, John visits the home of Elgee farm which is a farm growing moringa at a standard residential lot in their front yard and backyard.
You will discover why you should grow moringa, some of the benefits of growing moringa, how to plant moringa, how to harvest moringa, different varieties of moringa, and much, much more.
John will take you on a tour of this small-scale moringa farm and share with you some of the practices on why farming moringa along with other crops the natural way just makes dollars and cents.
You will discover if it is better to grow moringa from seed or cuttings and why it's important to start them in this manner.
You will learn about some of the many different cultivars of Moringa oleifera and how they differ and which one may be best for you to grow.
You will learn the best techniques for pruning and harvesting your moringa trees.
You will discover the best way to dry your moringa leaves and turn them into a nutrient dense green powder that you can use yourself or sell to others.
Finally, John will sit down with the farmer and ask him some questions about growing Moringa.

My Dwarf Moringa survived at 26 degrees without covering. (I do have mulch in my gardens) When it hit 20 degrees which never happens here in Houston, we covered the bottom with leaves around 6" up. Now looking down at the bottom of my tree shows green which means it will come out again for the spring. My tree has been in the ground around 7 years old. Hope this helps someone to give it a try.

Ok Carol i wished i had read your comment before i made mine above . this was my concern. I live close to the Tn border in kentucky and i was concerned that moringa wouldnt fair to well here. Our winters vary from year to year .concerning temp and snow fall. Im gonna try it anyway and if i suceed im going to spread this plant like johnny apple seed. There are so many unhealthy sick , pharmaceutical dependant people here . it breaks the heart and soul , it may not be a cure all but it a start. Tvm for your comment.

Hi John. I have been a subscriber of your channel for several years. You provide thorough gardening information which I appreciate. I have a garden and am interested in planting Moringa; my reason for visiting your page. I realize this video was recorded in 2018, however, I am visiting this specific page in 2022 because I want to add Moringa to my garden the proper way. After viewing Learn Organic Gardening... I am compelled to make a correction in the spirit of love. Attention viewers. I grew up in Hawaii. This looks like marungay (locally pronounced mah-roon-guy) or kalamungay. A lot of Filipinos in Hawaii cook it with papaya in a soup. It has an AMAZING taste. It's always in high demand there. My mom's neighbors ask her for samples. If you move to Maui, it'll be great to see you grow it in a future episode.

I live in Mohave Valley, AZ. 10 also. For 3 years I'd tried to grow moringa with success. I did OK. But they died. Anyway. I'd purchased 2 rolls of green shade netting and I now have success with 82 trees as of today. Granted I did this in June but the trees are around 2-2.5 ft tall. With the timmered water drip system they get the water they need and the extreme direct heat is no longer and the harsh UV rays have been cut down considerably. Hope this helps.

Hey John, thank you for all the value that you provide in your videos. I have been watching them for years. Asking a question here about growing Moringa trees. I live in Pensacola which is capable of getting frost and below 40 for several durations between 2 to 3 months of the year. If I grow the trees as an annual and cut them back and cover them in place would they grow back in the spring? The ground never freezes here below 1-2 inches, if at all. Thank you, and keep on doing what you do. Your a role model for many of us! Ben S.

Thanks to the both of you! So informative as I am getting ready to do intensive planting in my small 3'x15' full sun back yard. Does Moringa produce more leaves if I top it periodically? I would prefer to manage the growth if possible with the limited space and presume I will harvest a few times throughout the year. I would love to ideally have a dense 6-7' hedge but I haven't seen anyone doing that so far from my research. I love how we can be so creative with our gardening ideas and experiences, kinda like how the plants continue to evolve and thrive! Keep up the great video content on Moringa and other healthy gardening practices and ideas.

Hi John. I have watched all of your videos and have implemented most of the things I have learned from them. Unfortunately it seams you are not aware that the air potatoes are a highly invasive species. We are trying very hard to eradicate them from our wild areas. They are choking out many trees and out competing our native plants. The state is spending tons of money and many concerned persons are donating their time to pull them out. Please make others aware in Florida to not establish them in their yards. the spread at an alarming rate.

We source our chicken manure from our own happy hens. We ffeed them well, and they range around and eat lots of greens, plus kitchen scraps from all our neighbors. Sometimes they eat fruit and vegetable scraps and they drop seeds. The seeds which are "planted by chicken" grow even better than the rest of the garden😁! Love your episodes John, and wish you all the best with your farm. P.S. Not that it's up to me, but I secretly hope you go to PR for your farm. You could really make a difference for the good.

I'm on a "too tight" of a budget and I notice that I can get 1 pound from Africa for $15 and Elgee costs $25 for 1.75 oz. for $15. I'm also concerned that the Moringa from Africa might be blending in seeds.

I actually have friends who live there, it would have been good, but, doors always close for a reason, so I will move on, but it is a beautiful island

Moringa in the Philippines is called Marrungay in tagalog, and Mallungay in Ilocano. It is definitely a miracle tree. You can it eat cooked, raw, cut it back for firewood, or pig feed, and it will come back right away even more bushy. It also bears a fruit which they cook and eat.

in a permaculture set up, with what other trees would you combine the moringa tree? what about letting some rabbits or ducks run around in the orchard?

John can you talk about the Asitaba vegetable. I have about 3 big pots of them but there is not many people know about it. Me I get the youngest leaves and put about 1 cup and mix it in our salad. What I know is it is good for diabetes.

Could you plant dwarf moringa outside as an annual in the Pacific NW. Our average summer temperature is high 70's to low 80's. We have a few warmer days but not many. Or would they have to be in a greenhouse. I know they like heat.

I freeze mine . I only dry it if I will be travelling, But at home I eat it fresh or frozen. The wood si very soft .It goes into a chipper as easily as carrots go into a norwalk .I use the chipped up moringa wood as earthworm bedding .It is very soft and spongy .I do that with paulownia wood as well

Hey there, may I ask you if you know why there are small yellow spots on my Moringa leaves? I'm thinking it's because I'm at the north end of the planting zone - the ones I have growing on the porch aren't doing that - I've got them in partial shade and the three that are in the ground are now about 4 ft tall - thankyou!!! Didn't know if there was an email to send a msg to :)

@@natemurphy4367 hopefully they will come back in the spring and be able to grow them as perennials. I’m going to plant the seed late spring early summer. Then insulate heavily in the fall and see if they come back in the spring.

I live in Portland TN, and I want to grow my own moringa. Is there a place where I can buy the seeds or the plant? We do have freezing weather, it could drop up to 20 or 18. So it will be a plant that I will be bringing it inside while is cold outside. It seams to me that the moringa that grow like a bush will be easier to take care over here.

Would moringa tree leaves be alright for cows to eat? I live next to a cattle farm and im wondering if it would affect the cattle if any of the leaves fall across onto their land. If not i would like to gather extra and feed it to them. Im gonna olant a bunch of these trees. I wonder how well they would grow in Kentucky climate. Its pretty moderate climate but do get snow and ice in the winter.

Hi John. Great information thanks. I have a Moringa that my neighbor gave me and I didn't know its a tree. I've had it planted now for about 5 months and I thought it was doing great but now I'm confused because it looks nothing like a tree. More like a small bush. Is there different types of Moringa? I've tried to look it up online with no luck. Thanks in advance. Daryl
@blippitydar
@blippitydar 4 года назад
All depends on how you prune Daryl. If you don't top the tree it'll grow straight up super tall and spindly without much branch/leaf production. The lower branches will die off and you'll end up with a bare trunk with all the growth at the very top of the tree where you can't even reach it to harvest. I did that once...it was super cute and Dr Suess-like - but not at all productive. The point of growing is for harvesting the leaves and pods. So you def want to top it to encourage more branching/leaf production. You can top it high and keep it growing in tree form, or you can top it low, forcing more branch growth which keeps it in bush form. I wanted mine more tree-like but still low enough to harvest so I topped it at about 7ft. My sister on the other hand had several plants that she wanted to keep low and bushy, so she kept them trimmed to 3 to 4 ft. All depends on your preference and space.

I started dwarf Moringa seeds in solo cups. They grew but it was extremely difficult to transplant them into larger pots. The stems are very delicate and weak. They will bend, break and don’t like to be tied. It’s better to tie sticks on each side and tie them but not to the plants stem..
