I'm still nervous. I like to ham hand my setting, and the softest thing I've set is Garnet. "Know when to quit" resonated with me. I like to see NO gaps.

I do find that good small doublets are easier to set because they’re tougher than pure opals. The resin/quartz backing on a doublet helps to reinforce the opal.

True! The top is still fragile but the reinforcement helps. :)

Hi Jeannette, how thick is the bezel and what karat metal is it? Did you file an angle on top of bezel? How much metal is above the Opal, it looks to be about 1mm

This is 22k gold, 26 gauge bezel. You would only file an angle on a thick bezel, you wouldn't file one on a 26 gauge one. 1mm above the opal sounds about right, it is a very minimal amount. :)

Great tutorial. I worry about the cardboard though, if the ring gets wet. I have used a small amount of super glue under the stone before setting it that helps cushion it too.

I know the cardboard seems weird but we have used it for enamels, etc for 30 years and nothing ever happens. :)
